Inspiring Improv from Charm About You

For some people the idea of improvised piecing is scary. The thought of stitching bits of fabric together with no pattern or precise measurements can be overwhelming. Others find it liberating and exciting. Honestly I probably find myself somewhere in the middle. Improv quilts look really cool but how do you do it?! No measuring, no rulers, no real idea of how it will turn out? That might feel unnerving but it's also a LOT of fun. Letting go of expectations a bit, relaxing the rules and creating something completely unique. Truthfully in a world where there is a ...

Pillow Covers from Mama Spark's World

I showed the pillow covers in the previous post but thought  I would talk a little about them and show some close up photos too. I was struggling with what exactly to make.   I happened to find some amazing trim that was in the clearance section of JAF and thought it would be fun to use that on a gray background.   I happened to have some sparkly linen that was the perfect background for

Love with a Twist: Fabulous Fish from Clever Chameleon

Fabulous Fish appliqués for the Love with a Twist quilt along at Clever Chameleon

Our last Fishy Post for the foreseeable future

We’ve been stuck on the theme of all things aquatic here for a while now, haven’t we? I’m not really sure how that happened…. maybe because ideas spark more related ideas and I have been following the ideas flow a bit more freely than usual lately. Maybe it’s just a bit of good old fashioned coincidence, since Love in the Twist was planned out in January. Either way, I promise we will move on at some point to another topic soonish…. maybe in July </p>

Something Fishy: Colour & Inspiration Tuesday from Clever Chameleon

Something Fishy colour scheme by Clever Chameleon

Does something smell fishy in your inbox?

Fish balloon

At the risk of sounding obsessed with all things aquatic, yes, we are still on the theme of quilted ponds and fishes and such things here. Partly out of coincidence though….. I have been drawing up the next few patterns for the Love with a Twist quilt along and one of May’s blocks just happens to be the fish balloon. So I still have fish on the brain. But I promise we will surface from our underwater explorations very soon. I think a sweet balloon bunny with his mummy appliqué would be ...

Switch & Stitch Improvisational Stuffed Fish from Gefilte Quilt

Stuffed fish, high in fiber, yum! Here are a couple of whoppers (11" x 5"), made from blue jeans, though you can use any fabric. They serve as pillows and/or toys. This fun and forgiving method makes two at the same time, stacking and switching pieces. It can also be used to create four applique fish, if you're making an underwater quilt! My pair: Fish 1,
And Fish 2,

With minimal embellishment, they exude serenity. One has a coconut shell button eye.
Its partner started out with two vintage mother-of-pearl button eyes, and decorative stitching on the seams ...

weekend wanderings . . . from Count it *all* JOY!

Busy weekends and busier weeks (gearing up for our annual meeting at work) make for longer gaps between posts.  But I am pleased to note that I've surpassed last year's number of posts by five, with this post.  It's the little things, right??!

Todd and I did make time to take the boat out this past Friday. It was the first time I'd been out on our boat since prior to the surgery. I'd missed it ... but I was a little anxious about it, too.  Turns out I had nothing to worry about . . . except how ...

Grilled Cedar Plank Fish from From My Carolina Home

Now that the humidity has abated somewhat, it is wonderful to enjoy a meal on the veranda.  Grilling fish is a yummy way to celebrate the beginning of autumn, with its cooler evenings.  I’ve had fish grilled on cedar planks in restaurants and liked it, so when I got these planks as a gift, I decided to try this at home.  I like salmon, and DH likes ahi tuna, so those were the first experiment.

There are lots of different kinds of Cedar Grilling Planks available in multiple sizes of packs.  These are the ones we used.  They are ...

a gift of embroidery transfers from Charm About You

"Take your needle, my child, and work at your pattern; it will come out a rose by and by. Life is like that - one stitch at a time taken patiently and the pattern will come out all right like the embroidery."
Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr.

I was delighted and so touched to receive this amazing collection of embroidery transfers, kindly given to me by Lindsey. They had belonged to her mother and Lindsey wanted them to find a good home since she doesn't embroider (though she does quilt and knit!).
Embroidery is one of the first crafts I remember ...
