Three Meals-One Ham, Granny Stripe Afghan and Applique Needlebook from Canadian Needle Nana

Hello again, we are finishing off another busy week. I like to take care of maintenance things- for the car, the house and us, before winter sets in and weather and driving becomes an issue. We both were out of the house every day which seems to make the time fly by extra fast. It always feels good to have checkups behind us.

As a result of all that I didn't get in any daytime stitching, but my nights are still my stitching in front of the tv time.

A few more rows have been crocheted onto my Granny ...

Rainbow Neighbourhood QAL, Feelings, Monarch Applique from Canadian Needle Nana

Mr. and Mrs. American Goldfinch...I hope they are discussing housing options here at the wooden house. I love to watch them.

Here is a red house for the Rainbow Neighbourhood QAL with my paper pieced star block.
They are being stitched faster but I'm not sure any better. I am planning a lighter colour for the next one perhaps in peaches or summery kinds of shades.

With my Rainbow Neighbourhood project nearing an end, I'm thinking about an applique project next. Maybe this one, Monarch, from Laundry Basket Quilts. I've had this pattern for years and ...

New Year Stuff- Gifts, Projects, Calm Yourself Goal from Canadian Needle Nana

I've been busy doing everything but blogging. Out attempting walks with the camera in spite of all kinds of weather, baking muffins, embroidering, reading, listening to podcasts while putting together a jigsaw puzzle. It has been a peaceful, satisfying and relaxing welcome to a new year. Along the way I found two garbage bags of "stuff" to give to the Value Village.  So a little cleanout felt good too.

I decided to cook a turkey last week just so we could have a turkey dinner here at the wooden house and enjoy lots of leftovers too. A turkey is ...

Free Patterns, After the Snowstorm, Here's to Better Everything from Canadian Needle Nana

After the storm...

We are all dug out and have made several runs over the trails with the ski do so they are walkable again. Sun is shining and water dripping from the eaves. Yes it's warming up and rain is in the forecast for tomorrow. Crazy weather.  When the storm was winding down,  I took this shot of Ned sitting on his favourite new snowbank...from this spot he can see round most of the back yard.
I've been working on my photos, organizing them and deleting some too. It is very time consuming. I've also ...

Free Patterns, Storm Watch, Quilt Finish, Christmas Tradition, Chocolate Snowballs from Canadian Needle Nana

Christmas is kind of taking a back seat here to the weather forecast. About which we can't say we haven't been warned!  It's everywhere; warnings even turned up on my phone which I didn't know could happen (I have the simplest of plans on a 6 year old phone).  Some folks have just gotten their power back from the last snow event and now we are told to stock up and be prepared for more possible outages.

We have our oil lamps ready, plenty of wood for the stove insert in the fireplace, the bath tubs ...

Three Free Patterns, Scandinavian Christmas Hanging, Walt Disney Cartoons from Canadian Needle Nana

Time is short; I can no longer afford to just drift. That is my mantra these days. Though in honesty I don't think I ever just drifted...I remember too much of it all, conversations for instance and my feelings during those conversations. No I have to think I was fully present, putting in lots of effort and responsible for whatever happened or didn't happen, whatever words came out of my mouth, whatever got done or got lost along the way, etc.  And now suddenly it's yet another December and hopefully bringing with it a wonderful gift- ...

Two Online Goodies, Department Store Muffins, Yuletide Blanket, Friendship Stars from Canadian Needle Nana

It was fun to read about everyone's American Thanksgivings. From the small and quiet ones to the large family gatherings. Thank you for sharing.
Last week Hubby got the snow tires on the car just in time for downpours of rain. I'm always happy to have someone else do that chore though when he told me how enjoyable the garage waiting room was with t.v., free good coffee and comfy chairs, it doesn't sound too bad. With a little stitchy project in hand, I would actually have enjoyed the experience.

This fellow is back around the ...

Embroidered Journals, Quilty 365, Tiny Tree Trains, Aging Thoughts from Canadian Needle Nana

The Snow has arrived!

Here is my Tuesday deep thought...
Now in my seventies (you have no idea how weird it is to write that), I realize my face is changing. My nose appears larger probably because my cheeks are sinking. My teeth look and feel bigger while my hair is thinning. It goes without saying but I'll say it anyway, how grateful I am to be here and still have my wits about me to be able to even note these changes. I also thank goodness I've never been overly vain, just the normal amount of vanity ...

September Scrap Busting, Mushroom Madness, Jenny's Dressing and Jacquelynne's Free Pattern from Canadian Needle Nana

I never tire of walking this property in every season. Each time my eye lands on something new or different to take note of. I was happy to read Ralph's quote that  describes my experiences as I try to have an attentive eye too.

Pinterest
As a good example of that, it is newly mushroom season and a bountiful one here at the wooden house. Much to Ned's delight, we've taken extra walks with the camera, foraging for mushrooms, not to eat but to photograph.  I'm going to get my mushroom books (yes, nerdy me, I ...

Three Free Patterns, Hubby Better, Hand Stitching, Cloud Faces from Canadian Needle Nana

It was a two cups of coffee kind of morning. I just didn't have my usual energy level on my morning walk and I didn't get to sit by the pond. I spied deer in time to lead Ned away. They sometimes sleep overnight down there- we see the grass beaten down in certain spots in the undergrowth of the bushes that rim the pond. I've read deer are the poorest sleepers of all wildlife as they only have their ability to run as a protection.  Here is one that had been sleeping and I managed a ...

Serious Talk, A New Sighting, Redwork Hanging, Cross Stitching Feet from Canadian Needle Nana

I  finished another biographical book about Eleanor Roosevelt called Eleanor and Hick by Susan Quinn.  Here is one of Eleanor's lines I like and wrote in my journal.

" You can not live at all if you do not learn to adapt yourself to your life as it happens to be."

How to remain caring and sensitive yet adapt and accept the unkind things life throws at us. Not easy. Especially those times when "you think you've lost a lot and then you lose even more" times. One foot in front of the other with music in my ears ...

Second of Three Mistakes, Storm Damage, Tilda Plaid Quilt, EPP from Canadian Needle Nana

I am still feeling so grateful for the power and internet; there are still Ontarians without it! Our reliance on being on the grid is almost scary.

A couple of the trees down on our property.

Robbie was with us for a PA day and we did a walkabout and count. There are five blocking our trails. SIL will get the chain saw out and help us clear them. Perhaps more firewood for next winter too.

This baby red squirrel came up to my kitchen window to peek inside. Robbie said "he's not only cute, he's ridiculously cute ...

First of Three Mistakes, EPP Again, Wildflowers Free Pattern, Tiny Hand Stitched Needlebook from Canadian Needle Nana

I made a large pot of -I don't know what to call it- ground beef, onions, tinned tomatoes, cabbage, corn and carrots all cooked together with a little broth. Sort of a stew I guess. It was tasty and I added a couple of the wild garlic that has just ripened. Being me, I made enough for the whole street, so the first night I cooked rice to go with it and the second night, mashed potatoes. I'm ridiculously happy when I make enough of something to cover two meals.

I have a few more of the EPP ...

Seeing Eckhart Tolle, Toronto Trip, The Jackrabbit Beginning from Canadian Needle Nana

After over three years, I finally went somewhere! My last August 70th birthday gift from daughter was a ticket to see this fellow in Toronto.  Hence the train trip I mentioned in the last post.

Ekhart is a tiny man; we joked he looked like a happy gnome. We had wondered if, because he is such a low key fellow, our evening might wind up being a little boring. Anything but!

He talked for two hours straight and dealt with mostly two topics -how to deal with memories, loss and unhappiness, and also about God and beliefs. He taught us ...

4 Bits of Wisdom, Fabulous Fishy Cake, Amongst the Mostly Masked, New Quilt Start-Panama Pyramids from Canadian Needle Nana

My research of one site showed this was a Thanksgiving cactus. Because it bloomed at Easter, I thought it might be one programmed for spring, but no. I couldn't remember the colour of the original plant, but turns out this is pink. The Geranium there is also budding.

I just have to show you the cake Daughter Beth made for SIL' s birthday. He is a sports fisherman and Robbie said make a fish cake when asked what kind of cake should they make.

She used a little Air Brush for Cake Decorating tool to get the colouring right ...

Pond in April, To Do Applique Finish, Crazy Feelings from Canadian Needle Nana

The pond is gradually losing it's icy surface and the water level has dropped. This morning I heard a frog, a sure sign of spring.

Prelude to this comment...I can make my clothes dirty eating an apple; not kidding.
That moment when you put on a brand new blush pink t shirt and remember you were going to make spaghetti sauce for Saturday night dinner and also transplant some flowers so going to handle dirt.

Took it right off!! Hubby and I both wear aprons...his a manly one, to eat our suppers.
Speaking of Hubby, he was ...

Christmas Parcel, Cross Stitching Birds, Jewel Box Quilt Finish, Supportive Blogging World from Canadian Needle Nana

I've been giving Fraktur Flowers attention for the month of December. Hard to believe we are down to just hours of 2021 left, isn't it.

My sister always sends me a lovely Christmas parcel. I've not read this book. Any of you?  And of course, Liberty of London little sticky notes are very pretty.
And the tiny owl ornament with its' message is also so appropriate for me on both counts.
My happiest thing this week is having the Jewel Box Quilt all finished off. Funny how that can happen when you spend all your stitching time ...

Depressive Feelings, Lounging PJ's, Jewel Box Quilt from Canadian Needle Nana

My 70th Christmas went by in a flash. All of it enjoyable and very thankful for that too.

Though I will admit now that I had several very low days before the holidays with no accounting for exactly why. My mood was down in my boots. I worked at it though -spent extra time in the woods walking and with my camera, went through my photos, emailed friends, took my Vitamin D and exercised. I have no idea if any or all of that was what righted my mind. Perhaps it would have happened anyway if I'd put myself ...

Rule #5, She Keeps Walking, Tiny Scraps Autumn Table Topper, Blueberry Muffins from Canadian Needle Nana

Rule #5 Keep walking...both physically and figuratively. I'm intrigued how the two are linked. The summer after I moved to Ontario was a very difficult one for me. I'd had difficult times before but it seemed nothing had prepared me for the new challenges I faced. Separations are never easy and it felt like new worries were being piled on top of old.  I would take my little Shuffle with my music in my ears and walk all over the small town I was living in.  I would walk fast and return to the house tired but ...

Mood Boosting Things During LockDown from Canadian Needle Nana

The high Arctic Polar Vortex chummy touched down here on its way through most of North America.  Instant frostier than usual temperatures. When it is -20 C straight temperature it doesn't take much of a breeze to have frigid wind chills.  But not alone with this as so many of you have emailed about your equally frigid temperatures much further south of us.

Low Winter Sun

On a bright note, the folks at the Ottawa Valley Wild Bird Care Centre have noted the male American Goldfinches are already sporting brighter plumage. Though it may not feel like it just ...
