Snowmen in September from ... Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends. I gave myself an easy day yesterday. There were a few small tasks to take care of, and I did a Bowflex workout. Also, I pureed the watermelon given to us by our CSA farmers. I'll make some watermelon sorbet from that later today. I've made sorbet from all kinds of fruit, but watermelon is my favorite.

Since I was taking a lazy day, I didn't make it into the sewing room until late in the day. Smitty was my helper cat.

As a reminder, my goal was to make this block...the ...

Yes, We Have No Tomatoes from ... Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends. The great tomato extravacanza has come to an end. Since I did no canning last year, the empty jars have been stacking up to an alarming height. It was good to put some of them back to work. When all was finished, there were 10-1/2 quarts of tomato sauce and 7 pints of salsa. That should hold us for a while.

While I was waiting for those last jars to process, I was able to finish up the stitching on the Sashiko piece. Here's your peek. Any guesses?

Now I need to decide how ...

Itching to Stitch from ... Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends. It wasn't terribly warm yesterday, but the humidity was high, making it feel warmer than it actually was. Smitty was outside for quite a while. When he came in, he fell over in a dead heap to cool his tummy furs on the wood floor.

My day started with a Bowflex workout. I backed off by half on all the weight I'd achieved before we left for Alaska. Some of the weight seemed ridiculously light, but I had no sore muscles at the end of the day. Even my knee was feeling good. I ...

Bears for Binding from ... Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends. How's September treating you so far? It was warm here yesterday, and it didn't really cool off overnight. I'm hoping we don't get another hot spell coming through. It seems like we've paid our dues for the year, doesn't it? (Says the person who spent most of the summer in Alaska.)

Just the border remained on my quilting project yesterday. That was a pretty quick round of the quilt. I used this upsy-downsy heart motif.

When it was finished, I laid it out for a picture.

Border Crossing from ... Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends. So that's enough of that three-day weekend stuff. It's time to get back to work. My yesterday started with a trip to our plum tree to pick plenty of pretty purple plums. (Awesome alliteration.) Just look at these pretties...

After selecting a dozen of the most ripe ones, I baked them into this Original Plum Torte.

There's a story behind this recipe: The NYTimes published Marian Burros's recipe for Plum Torte every September from 1983 until 1989, when the editors determined that enough was enough. The recipe was to be printed for ...

Plan B for "Better" from ... Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends. Happy Labor Day and welcome to September! Time marches on, doesn't it? Fall will be here soon enough. Our landscape is already showing signs.

It was a busy weekend for me. Matthew was here on Saturday and spent the day with us. It was good seeing him and hearing about all the things he's involved with. Then yesterday, I had some housework to do, and we also headed down to the neighbors' for an open house. We didn't stay long, but it still took a chunk out of the day.

Despite being busy ...

Blueberry Loop Trail from ... Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends. The weather was cooperative for our hike on the Blueberry Loop Trail yesterday morning. We had a little trouble finding it, although our nav unit led us right to it. The signage gave it a different name. Even after arriving at the parking lot, we found yet a different name on the signs posted. Happily, we found the loop we were looking for on the posted map of the trail system.

I'd learned about this trail from one of Alaska’s "Only in Your State" newsletters I received at some point. Here is a quote ...

A Market, A Walk, and A Restaurant from ... Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends. It was another lovely day in Anchorage yesterday. Rain arrived late in the afternoon, but we enjoyed the sunny parts of the day. Our first stop was the Anchorage Farmers Market. It was a small market, but it's always interesting to see what's available in different parts of the country.

The names on these different sauerkrauts made them interesting and tempting. At $15 per jar, I passed, but I still enjoyed the labels.

As we were leaving, we noticed this community garden. There were some vegetables growing there, but mainly it was a flower ...

Anchorage, Alaska from ... Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends, and Happy Fourth of July to all who celebrate. We find ourselves in Anchorage this morning.

We had about 150 miles to drive yesterday. We're backtracking over roads we've already traveled. We skipped by Anchorage on our way south. We wanted to see Seward and Homer before the Fourth. Apparently, fisher people show up in droves over the holiday, and we hoped to avoid that. Both places were already crowded, and so I'm glad we missed the worst of it.

So all of that to say I didn't take a lot of ...

Two Projects from ... Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends. It was a pretty easy-going day yesterday. When I started my walk on the treadmill yesterday, I was thinking I had one more walk left to finish off the documentary I was watching, Ken Burns' "The West." When I reached the end of Episode 7, it continued on to Episode 8! What?!? Okay, so I guess I'm not done yet. It'll encourage me to keep walking, I guess. It would be good to finish it before we leave.

So let's talk about what else is going on. I took the first stitches on ...
