Keeping the Heat On from ... Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends. Thanks to those of you who chimed in with well wishes about my shoulder spasm. It's feeling better this morning, but still not 100%. I spent most of the day leaning against my heating pad. Keeping it warm seems to help the most. Since I spent most of the day sitting, I don't have much to tell you this morning.

Let's just start with the lovely birthday dinner we had with the family last night. We were celebrating Erik's birthday at a restaurant we've been to before...Amaterra Winery. The restaurant ...

Easy Afternoon from ... Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends. What a nice day we had yesterday. For whatever reason, it felt less hurried than usual. I finished one project, and I'm on the cusp of finishing another. Possibly the lack of projects half finished made it seem less busy.

Of course, I have lots of projects half finished, but I take them in stages. When I'm talking about "projects," I'm meaning whatever stage it happens to be in currently. Take the Barnyard quilt as an example. I made the blocks one per month. When they were all finished, it went to the ...

Dark and Stormy Night from ... Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends. It's quite dark outside this morning. Rain moved in overnight. I awakened early this morning to the sound of water running through the gutters. The field is still dry and brown. The rain will green it up, and we're looking forward to that. With autumn officially starting tomorrow, I expect we'll be seeing more rain very soon.

Yesterday started with a visit to the farmer's market with Erik and Mae. I came home with eight ears of corn, a bunch of cilantro, 1-1/2 pounds of tomatillos, 8 oz. of chanterelle mushrooms ...

Some Blocks from ... Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends. The nights are cooling off where I live. I don't know about you, but I'm happy for better sleep under the covers. My snuggle cat, Smitty, likes it too. It's been too warm to snuggle at night, and so he's happy to be able to cozy up next to me for a good snooze fest.

My day in the sewing room was busy yesterday. I had some repair work to do on one of the flannel rag quilts I made a while back. When I snipped the ragged edges, I'd inadvertantly ...

Making Progress from ... Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends. The promised rain has finally arrived. With a few breaks, it's been raining fairly steadily for hours. It started while we were asleep, and now it's beginning to look like a typical Oregon winter. Of course, winter is not even close, but we're getting a glimpse into the future today.

Thankfully, I was able to get out and do some weeding yesterday. I pulled up or "mussed up" some of the smaller weeds, and then whacked back my enormous sage plant to about one-third its size. I love the fresh sage, but the ...

Switching Gears from ... Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends. When I wrote yesterday, I was getting ready to have breakfast with my friend, Sue. She has a birthday today. I arrived at the restaurant before she did, and I wandered around the parking lot looking at their natural garden. They had pretty anemones blooming...

and some zinnias.

And I like that they have a quilt block on their pump house.

So breakfast was good. They make a mean bowl of oatmeal there with lots of fresh fruit. Sue and I hadn't seen one another since before our Alaska trip. She's done some traveling ...

A Good Day for Slow Stitching from ... Cat Patches

Good morning my friends. Our truck came home yesterday. Unfortunately, it has to go back again today. The air conditioner is working again, but not cooling very well. Probably it needs more refrigerant added, and we're hopeful that will fix it for good. If not, then I don't know. We're told it was an electrical issue, which would explain why it came on at times for a few minutes, then shut off again. Possibly some critter had chewed the electrical harness, but I'm no expert. It's a common occurrence here. Critters. Can't live with ...

Coming Up Short from ... Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends. It was another hot day yesterday...98°F at our place, which is very unusual for us. Being at the top of a hill, we're generally a little cooler than they are in the valley. It was a good day to stay in and sew.

There was a little more progress on the Stitching Wisdom quilt. The bottom row of blocks has just one embroidered block. I did that one the same as I've done the others.

At each corner were pieced (and embroidered) blocks. I did a little dot-to-dot quilting there.

There's ...

Catching Up from ... Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends. Day by day the place seems a little more back to normal. We've moved from the big jobs to the small jobs, including little bits of housework.

Yesterday's small gardening job was to tie up the echinacea into a tidy bundle and let the light shine on the plants hidden underneath. If you look closely at this image, you'll see black spots on the flowers. Those a bumblebees. They aren't aggressive, but I put on long sleeves just in case. You can see the size difference between the pink echinacea and the ...

Picking Up Speed from ... Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends. We're looking at another day of gray skies. We only caught the edges of the recent storm that blew through, but it gave us a quarter-inch of rain over several showers throughout the day...a good amount. A little more would be appreciated, but we'll take what we can get.

As time wears on, our energy levels are improving a bit. Mike and I were talking last night, and he admitted to being as tired as I am. We agreed that the trip was long and tiring (especially the last day's drive to ...
