It’s not Finished till the Binding’s Done from Romany Quilting

This is a cute little boys quilt made from pictures cut from a small panel and framed.  The top was constructed “leader and ender” style, and it was layered and pinned, ready for machine quilting.  The binding was made, and I was set to go onto the next step.

Ready to start quilting

I stitched in the ditch around the plain sashing and used simple Serpentine stitch in the diagonal quilting lines, extending them right through to the borders.

Then quiet time doing slow stitching, I enjoy sitting down hand stitching the binding down, especially when the ...

Out and About from Romany Quilting

We've enjoyed a few little outings lately, meeting up with friends for lunch.  In fact, last week was very social indeed, with two lunches in a row.  The first was down at Paraparaumu Beach – where I did a drop-off with a bag of donations for Foster Hope, a charity which helps children in foster care.  The children often arrive at their foster homes with very little indeed,  so Foster Hope gives each child a back pack with toiletries, pajamas, underwear, and whatever else they made need.  My donation last week was a selection of 18 draw string bags for ...

The Year that Was from Romany Quilting

I’m a little late sharing my 2021 quilting progress with you, but then, I’ve only just returned home from holiday.  It doesn’t seem that I’ve achieved a great deal in the quilting stakes this last year, and a look back through the blog confirms this.  Guess my back problem, subsequent diagnosis, surgery and recovery had a lot to do with this.  But I did finish a few, and here they are.  First up were two donation quilts, one for a boy and one for a girl, and some draw string bags for donation as well.

Lunch Date and a Finish from Romany Quilting

Wednesday was Lunch Date.  Some friends had given me a pretty card with some cash as a Get Well gift after my spinal surgery.  To do what I wanted with it, perhaps buy a little something to cheer myself up.  I had decided I would use it to buy lunch for Robin and myself as a treat.

So we went out to the local Cossie Club.  The chef was offering a “Covid Lunch Special”  three courses for $16.00 a head.  Excellent value, and I knew it was good as I had dined there the previous week with ...

Donations, Lunch and Hospital Visit from Romany Quilting

We had a busy old day last week, heading off to Palmerston North, clutching a “To Do” list in my hand.  First on the list was was to drop off my current donations for the Foster Hope Charity, which looks after children in foster care.  The drop off point is in a lawyers office in Palmy where one of staff is the local co-ordinator.  The office is situated on the 1st floor, with no lift available, so I had to struggle up the stairs with my walking stick, goodness knows how really old and infirm people get on when they ...

In Bed with Elvis from Romany Quilting

Where did this happen, you are probably wondering?  My neurosurgeon had requested an MRI of my spine to check on his handywork.  So I presented myself bright and early for my appointment to Pacific Radiology in Palmerston North.  What music would you like, I was asked?  After thinking about it I decided on Elvis, after all, I fell in love with his wonderful voice when my girlfriend’s brothers used to buy his records way back then in  years gone by.

So there I was, laying on my back, headphones on, cocooned inside the MRI machine for an hour, listening ...

Time to Roll the Dice Again from Romany Quilting

It’s been a while, but on Monday I decided it was time to roll the dice again.  Which number would get to the top of the list, I wondered?  It was number 1, my strings blocks, nice to work on this one again.  Last time it looked like this, with the blocks all stitched together.

P1000575

This little cot quilt needed a border, so that was the first step this week.  I added a cream border, and took it outside to the patio table one warm sunny afternoon to pin it all together.

It's a CQG Sew Day! Let's Play! from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

The CQG had a sew day on the 17th of this month. Eight or ten people showed up with different projects to work on. I even brought Marley and "her" machine since she had the day off from school.

Everyone thought it was just the best thing to see a young one enjoying sewing. She worked on a simple one patch baby quilt to donate to the CQG to be sold at our next quilt show. The plan is to have several small quilts, donated by members, that will sell and all profits will go to CQG to fund some ...

Hug it Forward from Romany Quilting

I had heard about a request from Plunket for pre-loved baby clothes for needy families.  I’m happy to support the clothing drive – no pre-loved baby clothes in this household, but I do have several hand knitted baby beanies I’m glad to donate.

Plus I had two little cot quilts I made sometime ago, one for a girl and one for a boy.  These were made out of a pile of nine patches which were hiding in a crate, so I was pleased to put them to good use.  Dare I admit that I’m sure I ...

Donation Time again, and a Birthday from Romany Quilting

It was time to do another donation drop off to Foster Hope, the charity who strives to make things easier for children in care.   My ‘just finished” crazy cat draw string bag was added to the other bags previously made.  These are used as toilet bags or to hold pens, pencils or other treasures.  I like to make some for boys as well, and had stitched a couple in plaid fabrics.  Also included were four little baby hats I had recently finished.

Binding Time from Romany Quilting

Today I’ve been enjoying some slow stitching time, hand stitching the binding down on my neutral strings  donation quilt.  This is always a very pleasant task, one which I quite enjoy.

P1340695

Of course, before I got to this stage, I had to sit and machine quilt it.  Once I removed Gemma from the chair by my sewing machine – with the quilt to be worked on draped over the back.  It’s obviously nice and cozy there for her.

Donation Time Again from Romany Quilting

For a change this week, I decided not to “roll the dice” to choose which UFO I would work on.  Instead I chose one which was not even on the list – a very pink cot quilt made from cozy flannel. This project started with six flannel squares from Jean  -  she had dropped off several bags of scraps some time ago full of all sorts of interesting bits and pieces.  Jean    blogs as https://jeanmckinstry.blogspot.com/.  I added pink squares to go with them and the idea grew from there.

Binding Completed from Romany Quilting

Are you like me and love getting the quilt binding done on your project?  It’s so nice to sit and stitch, knowing that the end is almost in sight.  Even nicer when you can hand stitch outside on the patio, as I did, making the most of the warm Autumn weather.

P1340335
Hand stitching the binding

This was a very economical quilt to make, as most of the squares used were gifted.  The border fabric came from the “freebie” table at my quilt club, and the flannel backing was also a give away, so I feel I've done very ...

Little Girl’s Cot Quilt from Romany Quilting

I’ve been busy working away on my donation cot quit over the last few days.  Last time I mentioned it, all the layers were pinned together, and I had ditch stitched around the blocks.  So it was time to add some straight line quilting to the body of the quilt with my walking foot.  How did we ever manage without these, I wonder?

P1330589

Then it was time to quilt the borders.  With a print like this, I decided to quilt in the lines between each coloured segment, making use of the diagonal shapes.  This worked quite well, and I ...

Woolly donations from Granny Maud's Girl

I decided that my charity knitting project was going to be knitted knockers (prostheses for breast cancer survivors), and that will be where my focus remains, but I was encouraged to help out at a recent craft bee at Calico & Ivy, where we made pouches for injured wildlife.

On the first day, I started crocheting a nest. The group tried a couple of nest patterns but unanimously decided that we liked Karlen Gunderson’s best.

Last Quilt Club Night of the Year from Romany Quilting

There was a great attendance at our December Club Night, with some faces which I hadn’t seen for a while putting in an appearance.  Our guest speaker for the evening was Diane Southey, owner of Village Books and Crafts in Palmerston North.  Her talk was all about “Modern Quilts”, the new quilting movement sweeping the world.  Modern quilting is defined as the use of bold colours, high contrast, improv piecing, and lots of negative space to show off our creative quilting.  Diane then showed us slides from Quilt Com of some of the prize winning quilts.  And to show ...

Donation time again from Romany Quilting

It’s time to pass on the little draw string bags I’ve made and take them to the drop off collection point for Foster Hope, a charity helping children placed into foster care.  These little lined bags are fun to make, using up some novelty scraps, and I try to make some for both boys and girls.  The children use these bags for toiletries, or as pencil bags.  Gemma thought it was “all about her” and did a little photo bombing!
