✿ tooth fairy dresden ✿ from Charm About You

My youngest recently had her first wobbly tooth. I asked her if she wanted to help me pick fabrics out to make a tooth fairy cushion and she was very excited. Lois is very into pink and glitter and flowers. We thought about colour combinations and she said she liked the colours on her dress:

So we used that as a starting point, pulling out prints from my stash and she would give a yes or no. Once we had a few prints she got selective and basically chose every print that had a flower on it.

To let those ...

Straight out of Line!! from Crazy Quilter on a Bike!

That sounds like me! Always out of line! But actually, it's the name of a ruler by Creative Grids. Seriously? Yep. I see they have a video on their web site. Perhaps I should have looked at the video for tips?

In the midst of all this chaos, I still needed to sew and not having anything super urgent on the list, I grabbed a UFO box that was sitting upstairs. Funny how we do NOT forget our UFOs. I seem to remember each and every one.

This quilt was started as a sample for a demo on rulers ...

Pineapples and Paris Star quilt from Charm About You

It's been sew sew sew at my house! These projects each have a lot of seams and used up a lot of thread. Completely worth it though because they turned out really nicely.

My first project used the new Bird Pond collection in Blue and Teal by Tilda. I made two sizes of pineapple blocks for a 20" cushion front (which I did make into a cushion but I don't have a picture of the finish!). I chose to fussy cut the gorgeous Anemone print for the centre of the largest block and for the corner squares.

Winter Flurries Week 2: Mystery sew along with Fort Worth Fabric Studio from Carried Away Quilting

Hello quilting friends! I’m popping in to share my progress on the “Winter Flurries” mystery sew alongwith Fort Worth Fabric Studio. This week we made four Granny Square blocks to go with last week’s Economy block. I tell you what, the Granny Square blocks were so much fun that I have a hankerin’ to make a whole Granny Square quilt!

Last week I showed you my fabric pull for this project, but as I laid out this week’s blocks, I realized that my center square selection just didn’t have enough pop. I had chosen a ...

Modern Scot tartan patchwork quilt

Being married to a Scottish man I was happy to be given a project from the book 'Modern Scot Patchwork: Bold Quilts Inspired by Iconic Tartans' by Kathy Allen, to make for Sewing Quarter. The book features 8 different tartans and you can make various size quilt projects from each one. The colours chosen for this quilt work really nicely with the theme, as they remind me of thistles and that beautiful Highlands palette. The also make me think of Wimbledon and the Suffragettes.

+ quilts + makes from Charm About You

big plus quilt solid fabric

Three quilts, three cushions and a table runner are the makes I'm showcasing today, that I've demoed recently on Sewing Quarter. All finished, despite the fact I didn't always photograph them once I was done. I did manage to take pictures of the interesting aspects or features I wanted to share though so that's good!

This Big Plus quilt is deceptive, the pieces are big and the quilt is a single bed size. The pattern comes together really quickly but you have to keep the columns organised so the pluses fit together correctly.

Ta-DONE: Tabby Mountain Disco Kitties Wrapped Up & Relinquished. Hallelujah! from Cheeky Cognoscenti

HEY, YOU GUYS!!  My Tabby Mountain quilt is officially Quilted, Bound, Laundered, and finally, FINALLY finished:

Highlights from the Tabby Mountain Photo Shoot
Having been inspired by the mad photography skills exhibited by other quilters on social media, I dragged my husband around against his will took advantage of an overcast Saturday afternoon to drive around in search of the perfect location for a photo shoot.  My favorites are the ones where I wrapped the quilts around the bronze bull statues in the Ballantyne Corporate park.

May Sew Sampler Box with Fat Quarter Shop from Carried Away Quilting

Happy weekend, quilting friends, and heartfelt Memorial Day greetings to all of my friends in the U.S.  I hope you enjoy a wonderful time with family and friends as we remember all who have served our country. My dad served in the U.S. Army for two years and was stationed in Alaska, where I was born. I will be thinking of him and many others especially this weekend.

curvy log cabin & bebé quilts from Charm About You

Log cabin blocks have to be one of the greatest classics. Not only are they beautiful in their most basic form but there is so much you can do with them when you play with fabric placement and layout. This quilt is made of wide and narrow strips to create "curves", I used the Creative Grids Curvy Log Cabin Trim Tool to make 8" blocks. Honestly this makes it so easy and the result is perfectly precise blocks. A beautiful selection of Liberty prints and a variety of greens makes for a quilt with a gentle spring vibe.

friday night quilt and cathedral cushion from Charm About You

Friday night quilt

I'm so fortunate to be able to work with such beautiful fabrics and some of the best! Here's a little round up of a couple of makes I did for Sewing Quarter recently...

Liberty fabric The Cottage Garden

Liberty is one of my favourites and I use quite a bit of tana lawn in my own projects. I also have some of the lifestyle cotton prints they did a few years ago for quilters. The new Cottage Garden Collection prints from Liberty are quilting weight cotton and lovely to sew with. I cut them up into lots of pieces to make the Friday ...

forest mountain quilt & more... from Charm About You

Time for a catch up... I have been busy making and it would be wrong not to document everything here. This is a round up of some of the recent projects I've demonstrated on Sewing Quarter, I'm starting small and working up to the big quilts!

This block was made using Jo Avery's fabulous Compass Spin pattern, a combination of foundation paper piecing and sewing curves. It's a great project for playing with fabric value.

hearts and hugs quilt from Charm About You

I was lucky enough to get to play with some of the new Ludlow collection by Denyse Schmidt. Inspired by the mills and red brick buildings of New England, Ludlow is full of gorgeous geometrics and pretty florals. Denyse is one of my favourite designers and her colour ways are always stunning.

Using the blues and reds I revisited my Heart and Kisses quilt design, this time using appliqué circles and hearts. The large appliqué pieces means the quilt comes together quite quickly and also showcases the prints beautifully.

Even my husband fell in love with these prints (with no ...

Let's fly, let's fly away - butterfly & map quilt from Charm About You

Two quilts that both have a flying theme today! One literally has wings and the other is a map of the world. To add detail I used decorative stitches on my machine, something I am exploring more and more and have a lot of fun with. Both projects were demonstrated on Sewing Quarter.

I created a butterfly mini quilt, a smaller version of a pattern from the book 'Log Cabin Variations' by Annies. The butterfly shapes were easy to appliqué with bondaweb and then stitched by machine with a blanket stitch and a satin stitch.

The whole pattern is made ...

tree pillow and merry go round quilt from Charm About You

There's nothing quite as frightening as taking a pair of scissors to cut into something you've sewn! The results of doing reverse appliqué make that trepidation well worth it though.

reverse applique tree pillow Tilda

This is the Tree Pillow, pattern from the book Sewing by Heart by Tone Finnanger, made for Sewing Quarter.

reverse applique tree pillow Tilda

It's a lovely folk design, with birds and lots of curves; circles, flowers and leaves. I used two layers of cream cotton over the Sigrid Plum print from the Tilda Cottage Collection.

» Charm About You

Some designs are organic and simple. I had drawn a quick sketch of this quilt and, as I was creating it, the dimensions and overall layout changed slightly from my original vision. It just worked, allowing myself to adapt the pieces and play with the blocks.

The half dresdens work perfectly to create rising and setting suns, the bold mix of colours and solids/prints adds interest and I used both curved and pointed segments to suggest beams of light. The colours bring to mind the artist Clarice Cliff, her designs and use of colour are hugely inspirational.

I used ...
