Baby Lock Sashiko Sewing Machine from Tea Rose Home

Sashiko is in the hooouse!

This giant box from Baby Lock was delivered to my doorstep the day before Christmas Eve. I had my birthday in December (I turned 50! Yep, it's kind of a big one), it was like receiving a birthday present and a Christmast present both at the same time! The name of the machine is "Sashiko", look closely, not Sachiko; which is my name(means a happy child or blessed one). Sashiko is a traditional Japanese embroidery or stitching used for the decorative and/or functional reinforcement of cloth and clothing. The items that were ...

Pain, Grief and Showing up Anyway from Where Art & Life Meet

So here’s the thing…  I feel a whole lot better when I show up even when I feel awful, even when I feel things are rough and I’m tired, even when I don’t want to.  I’ve also learned that showing up anyway is the single best remedy for not continuing to feel that way. Except […]

This Too Is Grief from Where Art & Life Meet

Stitch, put on the design wall, evaluate, consider, take down, add a new element, stitch, put back up on the design wall, take a photograph, consider, have an idea, take down, thread up a new color, take a chance, take a risk, take a breath, stitch and then the tears arrive.  Not a few drops […]

Remembering My Mother and Stitching Anyway from Where Art & Life Meet

This blog is a reminder of my mother.  She was my biggest supporter and commented over the years more than anyone else. It was through this blog that I often kept in touch with her and towards the end it was the one full proof way I knew I could reach her, especially when my […]

Sacred Stitches from From the Strawberry Patch...

When you're a part of a small, mission congregation, everyone is called upon, at one time or another, to use their own abilities for the good of God's church. It truly does take a village! Only recently has our church decided that, in addition to Sunday morning worship, we'll be adding a Wednesday evening Vespers service, to include Holy Communion. This is a great thing! However, with limited

Facing Adversity from Where Art & Life Meet

There are so many things going on that I cannot talk about publicly for a variety of reasons, but all of these things piled up can make life feel particularly challenging at this moment. The specifics are unimportant. Most people are grappling with things they cannot and do not talk about for personal reasons. What… Continue reading Facing Adversity

The Joy of Obsession from Where Art & Life Meet

Often referred to as a negative, I’ve always thought of obsessions as a lifeline to exploration, creativity, joy and boundless energy. Being obsessed with something (rather than someone) results in any number of truly awe-inspiring things, such as these artists who carve thread spools into amazing miniature works of art. Or Andrea Love whose website… Continue reading The Joy of Obsession

Genesis 1:20 from From the Strawberry Patch...

"And God said, "let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures"..."In preparation for a youth Sunday School lesson on Creation tomorrow I was reminded of this wallhanging done back in 2006. This was my assigned Bible verse on which to create a piece for a mixed media art show at church at that time. This piece was auctioned off, my sweet mother-in-law bought it, and it hung over her desk in

“Discomfort” & Designing from Where Art & Life Meet

I’m working on something new, which is always exciting and uncomfortable at the same time. *Digression alert* That word -uncomfortable – is also used when you go into a doctor’s office to have a surgical procedure done and they say, “This might pinch a little” or when you go to the dentist to get your… Continue reading “Discomfort” & Designing

Music, Dining & Design from Where Art & Life Meet

All Along The Watchtower. Remember that song? Here you go. My new favorite YouTube Channel – Playing for Change presents musicians from around the world, bringing people together as only music and art can. One of my brothers, I’m fortunate enough to have three, asked me to send him photographs of the restaurants in NYC… Continue reading Music, Dining & Design

Curiosity, Exploring & Options from Where Art & Life Meet

Being curious has its downside, particularly in the middle of the night when I should be sleeping, but instead am listening to the air conditioner kick in while watching the ceiling fan make its rotations. Some random questions that entered my mind at around 3:30am: Where did the saying Curiosity Killed the Cat come from?… Continue reading Curiosity, Exploring & Options

Creating Anyway from Where Art & Life Meet

This is the title of my latest YouTube video where I talk about how easy it is to talk oneself out of creating something new. Ever had the experience of thinking – “I’m going to design something new, I don’t know what yet, but something!” and then you sit down and suddenly you’re thinking about… Continue reading Creating Anyway

1,000 YouTube Subscribers and Some Gratitude from Where Art & Life Meet

Eight weeks ago today, I posted my first video to the YouTube Channel I created, On the Other Hand. Yesterday I hit 1,000 subscribers! What began as an idea to benefit Left Handed people who love to sew and hand stitch, has grown into a much larger more all encompassing vision and where I demonstrate… Continue reading 1,000 YouTube Subscribers and Some Gratitude

Here We Are: A City & its People Transformed from Where Art & Life Meet

The juxtaposition of the dire and frightening, with the joy and hopefulness that inevitably arrives with spring and warmer weather, is on display everywhere here in New York City, the city that has been my home for almost 40 years. At no time in my life have I been more aware of death. The collaborative… Continue reading Here We Are: A City & its People Transformed

When Times are Tough… from Where Art & Life Meet

My version above of a meme by @stitchesnquilts that I saw on Instagram the other day and it made me laugh so I wanted to share my tweaked version of it. Because boy do I crave laughter right now. The meme below, another that has been making the rounds, made me smile. And who doesn’t… Continue reading When Times are Tough…
