The cows will begin calving in 3 weeks...

It is time to trail them down river to the

calving barns...

4 miles of gravel roads ahead of us...

I am driving the hay wagon ahead of the cattle...

you can see them following me

in the side view mirror.

We have made it out onto the main gravel road...

the older cows know right where they are going,

they have made this trip many times.

Traffic slows up the drive,

but we work the cattle around them

and keep on going.

We have made it off the road and into ...

Summer's End... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

Our Bartlett Pear tree is giving

us a big harvest this year...

We collect a box full each morning...

2 canner loads to process each day...

14 jars of pears a day.

We will enjoy these over the winter months.

Our Gravenstein Apple tree has also kept us busy:

3 pies came out of the oven today.

I try and stitch whenever I get the chance:

I have been working on this curved piece

sunflower quilt this summer.

I have been finishing up tote bags

from all of the messy painted canvas

that was painted earlier in the year.

Dottie.....The Chicken from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

A peaceful evening in the cow fields...

Each evening we check on the cattle...

They are all content in grass up to their bellies!

This is Mary Black Feather

This is a heifer with her very first calf...

Happy Mother's Day!

Mama and Baby are doing just fine.

We were working yearling cattle in our corral

here at home...

Dottie, one of our hens, shut down production.

She got into the corral and began pecking around for worms, clearly oblivious that 57 head of  500 pound yearlings were in the corral with her.

We were afraid she would get ...

Spring Time @ Kessi Farms... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

Spring has arrived here in Western Oregon

I am not listening to the hum of

my sewing machine.

I am hearing the ROAR of the tractor...

I am spending this week in the hay fields...

dragging mole hills.

The light spots on the right side, are mole hills.

Knocking down mole hills keeps the hay crop

cleaner when we mow hay in June.

This juvenile bald eagle

kept me company while I was on the tractor.

This adult bald eagle

also kept watch over the hay field.

Just as I stepped off the tractor,

one of our heifers was giving ...

Cow Trivia from Rose Prairie Quilts and Farm

I am tired of just of writing about quilting and such. And you really don't want me to write about housework or other cleaning, heck I don't even want to.

So I thought I would do something related to the farm

How about Cow Trivia

* A cow has 32 teeth, and will chew about 40 - 50 times a minute.

*A cow will chew for up to 8 hours a day

* Cows move their jaws about 40,000 times a day

*Cows spend about 10 hours a day laying down.

* Cows will stand up and lay down about 14 ...

Sewing and Calving... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

This time of year I think about sewing and

quilting more than I actually do any of it...

The Thread Shed has been mostly silent

the last few months...

I did enjoy stitching these 2 bunny dolls

last week.

While I am thinking about sewing and quilting,

I am here at the cow barns:

Calving season began 6 weeks ago

and we are half way done.

We have red and white Shorthorn calves

this year

I just adore this super cute heifer

After 3 years of Black Angus calves,

these Shorthorn calves are...

a punch of color for me!

Sunday Morning..................... from Better than I deserve!

I see the church from the office window everyday! It is the church I was confirmed in a long time ago. I would have never guessed I would see it everyday out my window since Dec 31st 1977!
We have had some nice days and some not so nice days as far as weather goes. The ewes and lambs make good use of the old barn on snowy days.
 The lambs are
 so cute.
We herded the cows home the other day. They didn't make it easy but in the end they all got home.
 They tend to get ...

Sheep, cows and Pillows.................... from Better than I deserve!

Here's the black sheep of the family! John's ewes are lambing so there's lots of baby lambs running around.
The guys added on to the hoop barn so there's more room for calving heifers.
The calves have a place to stay in for several days then they get turned out in a smaller pen with a calf shelter to go in if needed.

Pictures from my walk the other day.
It was a warm day, and the breeze was at my back so it was a nice walk.

 Almost home.
Lots of snow last week but ...
