Twin Calves... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

We are spending a lot more time over

@ the Cow Barns...

Twin Calves were born last week...

Mama Cow has decided she only wants

the heifer calf.

She is rejecting the bull calf.

That means a lot more work for the Cow Boss.

One of us stays in the pen

while the calves nurse...

so mama won't push the bull calf away.

Maybe in a month or so we can convince her

that she loves both babies?

This darling calf was also born last week:

This little bull calf is awful cute!

His mama likes him just fine!

Turkey Vultures in the Cow Pasture... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

It must be SPRING here in

Western Oregon...

The Turkey Vultures are back!

We were out checking on the cows and calves

 this morning...

The turkey vultures are perched

on the fence posts...

I have been trying for years to get a close up view

of these beautiful birds...

I had my Canon 50X along today

and it zoomed in and captured the birds

having a solar bath...

They spread their wings...

it dries them out and also bakes off the bacteria

on their feathers

The zoom lens allowed me to stay far enough

away so we observed natural behavior ...

White Cow has her Calf... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

We raise Shorthorn mother cows

They are red and white and oh so beautiful...

Once in awhile a white calf is born:

We kept her as a replacement heifer...

A replacement heifer is a yearling calf that you keep (rather than selling it with the rest of the yearlings) and breed it to become a mother cow in your herd. Each year we keep the very best heifer calves, usually a dozen of them, to become mother cows in our herd.

Here she is as a mother cow.

She was in labor all day yesterday...

We checked on her throughout ...

New calves on the ground daily...

After a morning @ the Cow Barn,

we head back home for breakfast...

Before the day could get away from me,

I went out to the Thread Shed

to do some stitching...

This is a photo pillow...

a birthday gift for someone special.

24 x 24 inches

So glad I had the time to get it finished

in time for the big day!

Just minutes after a calf was born this morning,

I filmed this video:

Devotion... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

Mother cows are devoted to their young...

Calf 17 greeted us when we arrived

@ the Cow Barn this morning...

He has found a warm and dry place to sleep...

Our mama cows are the best mothers

and totally devoted to their babies...

From birth, the calf knows the mother's bawl...

when mama calls, the calf comes running to her.

The mama also knows her own baby's cry...

when baby cries, she comes quickly

to see what is wrong.

Calving Season.....a real treat!

The Babysitter..... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

This is the babysitter...

She is watching over more than her own baby...

Some of the other mama cows have

stashed their babies with her

while they go out and graze in the pasture...

When she gets hungry,

she will leave her baby with another mama.

This is heifer calf Number 2...

she was born 2 weeks ago.

I love that peaceful face.

These calves were born a year ago...

We have 11 barns on the farm...

we use several of them for winter hay storage.

messy sewing from block-a-day

baby alpaca

This weekend we welcomed a new babe to Wombat Hill Farm – our first wee cria!  That’s a baby Alpaca for those of you who have not yet met one :-)  I was at work when this miracle unfolded – such a bummer – but Julian and Noah were there to watch the birth in all its calm beauty and ease.  Goodness me, don’t these animal mamas just get on with the job.  I’m sure there will come the time when things don’t progress as smoothly as this, but for our first two large mammal births here, the mamas – Mabel ...

Cows and Calves... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

This time of year I spend less time

and more time @ the Cow Barn...

This morning we are over at the Cow Barn...

It is a beautiful morning so the cows and calves

are out grazing in the pasture...

While the cows are outside,

I am inside bedding the barn...

Every 2 to 3 days the barn needs

fresh, dry straw...

Now that this side is bedded...

I need to go over and do the other side.

After checking on the cows and calves,

we head over to the Bull Barn

The little bull in front ...

Hump Day from Rose Prairie Quilts and Farm

Boy it turned out to be such a pretty day.

Ended up doing chores this afternoon, cleaning out the nesting boxes and collected 7 eggs today. The girls are working hard these days.

one is out of the shot
Checked on the heifers, there are nine of them that I'm responsible for and of the nine... four of them have had calves.

They are so cute.

That's right, I'm so cute....

I'm still putting up the last of the outdoor Christmas decoration. The inflatables needed to put in their boxes. I had them in a chair ...

What's Up from Rose Prairie Quilts and Farm

More like what has been up the past few days

Saturday morning was so cold and "the man of the place" needed help with putting out hay for the cows. I don't get to do every weekend because my father-in-law usually help but not when it's so cold.

Frost on the grass.

We bundled up and off we went.
I take pictures a lot of the time with my phone and can again now. Had the battery replaced after months of not being able to take more than one or two and then the battery would be drained ...

Fall work.. from Better than I deserve!

The fall cows are calving now so I took my camera the other night when we checked for new babies.
The grandsons still have their ponies even tho they are too big to ride them. They don't want to part with them.
These two aren't sure of what to make of Greg he was making noise so they would perk up their ears, but she looks scared to me:)

Good crop of sunflowers in the alleyway.
My newest succulent it has grown alot for the first season.
I love all the different hen and chicks.
