Summer on the Porch Quilt Pattern in 4 Sizes! from Busy Hands Quilts

The Summer on the Porch quilt pattern has returned from her trip around the world and gone through a special polishing, and is ready for you!  Two sizes have been added to the quilt pattern - Throw and King - to bring the total number of sizes to four.

The pattern includes instructions on organizing the pieces and keeping them together in order to end up with organized blocks with matching star points.  There is even a splash of strip piecing included in the pattern - my favorite method to include.  ♥

This is a fat quarter friendly quilt pattern, so grab your favorite ...

Bubble Up Lap Quilt in the making from Quilting & Learning

It's almost done! I've been wanting to make another lap quilt for our love seats in our living room to keep Chevy cosy and the seats relatively dog hair free.

The day that I heard that Quilty Pleasures, our local quilt shop, was not an essential service, and would have to close to customer traffic, I rushed out and supported the shop

Garden Party from Sew Preeti Quilts

I have a new finish - Garden Party.

Garden Party

But first the back story.
In 2015, I made this quilt - Terrace Garden and set it aside.

Terrace Garden

Some time later, Paul asked me for a quilt.
Me: For?
Paul: Chad's wife has a new baby.
Me: Boy or Girl?
Paul: Girl.
I showed him Terrace Garden and he approved.
Chad was appreciative and sent this picture.

Such cuteness!!!

And that is the best thank you for a quilter - send them a picture of the quilt with the recipient!!!

Six years passed. I met Chad and his wife at ...

Card Trick Throw Quilt! from Busy Hands Quilts

This is Card Trick - another finish from 2019 that hasn't been featured here on the blog!  This is made with a layer cake of Shelburne Falls by Denyse Schmidt.

This is a pattern I designed for Bluprint.  They kitted it as quilt kit in Witchcraft which you can see right here.  Maybe you'll see it as a quilt kit in another Bluprint fabric collection at some point.

This is a layer cake quilt pattern that goes together fairly quickly.  In order to have all of those squares for the border, the layer cake isn't simply cut into ...

Birds in the Air with Project Quilting 11-4 from Quilting & Learning

Challenge 11.4, "Birds in the Air" certainly challenged my creativity because I was determined to avoid making the traditional block at all cost! My accuracy challenged and tired brain was revolting against all of those HST (half square triangles)!

A conceptual Birds in the Air block

A conceptual Birds in the Air block

Since I didn't want to make those HST, I though of alternatives. When in doubt, I go to my strengths. Could I make a Birds in the Air block with free motion quilting (FMQ)? Sure, why not?

Ironic aside: it would have been much easier ...

Finishing up One Monthly Goal - OMG from Quilting & Learning

I can't believe that it's the end of January. It was pretty intense quilting wise. I finished my two Project Quilting and the Winter Blues project with very little time to spare. That's how I live dangerously.

Garden Party Quilt Kits on Sale! from Busy Hands Quilts

Summer on the Porch has been kitted by Bluprint in Twin and Queen sizes, and they are currently on sale for half price!  This is a great time to pick up some beautiful fabrics at a great price.  I made the queen size quilt sample you see on Bluprint's website, and this is it hanging on my clothesline.  Yes, this is the quilt that I broke the clothesline with, not because of the weight of the quilt, but because of my impatience.  :(  You can read more right here.

Two Step Quilt Kits! from Busy Hands Quilts

Today I'm sharing more Secret Sauce Sewing - another quilt kit which I designed for Bluprint last year!  This is Two Step, a fun charm square design which has been kitted in Dutch Garden III in Lap (I'd call it Baby), Throw, and Twin sizes.

You may or may not know that I am a strip piecing quilter at heart.  Strip piecing is sewing pieces together before cutting them again, rather than cutting small pieces and then sewing the pieces back together; it's a time ...

Laurel Queen Size Quilt Kit from Busy Hands Quilts

Today I can reveal some of last year's Secret Sauce Sewing!  Laurel is a queen size quilt pattern I designed for Bluprint in June of 2019 with their beautiful new fabric collection, Dutch Garden III.

Laurel is a square medallion quilt with wide borders centered around a giant star, and it's made with very large HSTs and squares which make the quilt go together very quickly.  I made this quilt sample in two days, from cutting to binding; it is quick!

Yes, I do have an orange wall in my house!  Both of my boys {men, actually} moved ...

Linoleum Plus from Sew Preeti Quilts

Here is my first finish of 2020.  I am calling it Linoleum.

First Finish!!!

Try saying "a roll of linoleum" fast if you can :-D
How did it go?

Once upon time, a long time ago I wrote this tutorial.  Some of the resulting blocks became a part of Have a Minty Day quilt.  And yet others waited patiently to become something.

When I saw the Cross Plus Block, I had an idea. What if the colors are reversed?
Then my leftover tutorial blocks can be made into this!!!

All I had to do was find coordinating print fabrics.  Mystic ...

More quilted gifts, an OMG and a Christmas runner from Quilting & Learning

I can't believe that I've got so many posts this month! I've been busy finishing up my two Christmas gifts. Actually there was supposed to be one, but a squirrel came for a visit!

More quilted gifts

My December One Monthly Goal (OMG) was another free motion quilted (FMQ) fabric basket. I used some incredibly lovely Japanese fabric for the FMQ.

The light was at its best outside on the snow :-)

I took an indoor shot the next day
I also created another journal cover. Unfortunately I misread my notes and didn't cut the fabric big ...

Making a few gifts from Quilting & Learning

I'm really trying to avoid deadlines and I didn't decide to make a few gifts for Christmas lightly since I don't want these to be IOU gifts!

Christmas gift exchange

I am going to a potluck with my colleagues and of course there is a gift exchange. You know....unisex and under $20 (not including taxes). Personally I usually go for something edible but this year, I had a Christmas mug rug that's been hanging around my sewing room for the last year since I made it after Christmas. That seemed like a good way to ...

Making a journal cover with practice piece from Quilting & Learning

Don't you love practicing on something and then being able to use that practice piece to make a finished, usable project? That's what happened to my practice piece from last week's Free Motion Mavericks.

FMQ my practice piece

My piece went from this very bright poinsettia fabric to these "cat's eye" shapes with different types of feathers within and outside of the shapes.

FMQ using the leaves as templates
The pink bobbin thread produced this flower.

Finally, adding FMQ filler between the flowers, in white thread, resulted in this!

Adding swirls, paisleys and
echoes between the ...

Learning to make a fabric basket from Quilting & Learning

I took some time to play this week. Since I've signed up to Bluprint (Craftsy) for the next year, I thought that I should actually make something. So here is my experience making a basket from Christina Cameli's Free-Motion Quilted Gifts course.

My first FMQ fabric basket
This is what Christina's basket looks like. Isn't it gorgeous?

Christina Cameli's Free-Motion Quilted basket
As you can see, my basket is shorter and not as firm. I learned a lot though and had fun making it

Oh, my goodness!! You guys, guess what? I have a few projects in the pipeline and one of them has been released. It feels so good for it to be out into the world and that means that I can finally talk about it. Yippie!!! Everyone, tis my newest pattern called Busy Bees quilt which I designed for BluPrint. I am over the moon, or should I say over the flowers. LOL.

I have such a great appreciation of bees. To me, they are tiny giants. The fact that they are responsible for pollinating flowers and trees which makes production ...

Summer on the Porch Queen Quilt from Busy Hands Quilts

Summer on the Porch hanging on my clothesline, a flashback to the warm, sunny days of summer.

This is the quilt that I broke the clothesline with, not because of its weight, but because of my impatience.  You can read about that over here.

This quilt kit has 4.9 star reviews on Bluprint.  :)

This fabric collection is called Garden Party.  When you click on this link, you will see the entire collection, as well as other projects made from the collection.  My Gooseberry Pie design is also kitted in Garden Party, in addition to the cutest Christmas Stockings!  You ...

Bluprint free month trial offer from The Quilt Rat

I promise I have a fresh post coming in a day or two, but today I wanted to share a link with you.

I have mentioned Bluprint before (previously Craftsy) whatever your interests, whatever you might like to learn more about...you can likely find a class on that topic. Quilting, sewing, knitting, cooking, baking, decorating, drawing, painting, spinning, crocheting....the list goes on and on.
I quite like the platform.....sometimes I "take" the whole class...sometimes, its just one portion or technique I want to see/learn and I jump to that part of the video class. I ...

Looking for Paper Piecing blocks from the Block Rock’n Series? from 627 Handworks

Due to changes within Craftsy I am moving the patterns to Etsy. Each block will priced at $1 OR buy the entire series of 12 blocks for $5.

This was a free series in the past. Having Etsy host the patterns is easier for  me, so feel free to share within sewing groups. Especially if you use one of the patterns as your Bee block! They do NOT need to be purchased multiple times. Same with the series purchase.

Thanks for your patience while I got these listings updated – they are ready to go.

Purchase and download HERE.
