My Secret to Matchstick Quilting from Brown Bird Designs Quilts

The Wonky Pinwheel Quilt

The Wonky Pinwheel Quilt in Honey Run

Last month, I showed off one of my new patterns, the Fan-tastic Quilt. This month, I got to preview Honey Run fabric and sew up the second quilt which is included in the Fan-tastic pattern. I call it the Wonky Pinwheel Quilt. Why? Well because there are big wonky pinwheels that repeat throughout the quilt, as well as some smaller pinwheels that also repeat throughout the quilt. It is such a fun and easy quilt to make. Its larger blocks really show off the fabric in the quilt. A great way to quilt ...

Bloque 1 quilt Where We Love is Home de Anni Downs from La Vida en Patchwork

Bloque 1 quilt Where We Love is Home de Anni Downs

Back home in my studio from Gillian Travis

After so long away I really wanted to get back in my studio. It was cold and grey weather which was good – on sunny days I find it hard to be inside

I started this quilt back in January, now it’s finished. It’s single bed sized. It’s not a scrappy quilt and it is not made with left overs. I really hate the term – scrappy quilt.

I bought some fabric in the Central Market in Kuala Lumper. I think it is probably printed in Indonesia. It was about £5 for a 2m length. I have made 6 ...

Quilt Where We Love Is Home from La Vida en Patchwork

Quilt Where We Love Is Home empezamos, o eso esperamos

Spring Clean Your Studio Blog Hop from Brown Bird Designs Quilts

If you have listened to the Modern Sewciety podcast with Stephanie, you will know that one of her lightning round questions is, “Are you a creative mess or neat and organized?” I am definitely the first, a creative mess. So when I was presented with the opportunity to be on the Spring Clean Your Studio Blog Hop put on by Cheryl Sleboda, I thought YES!!! This is what I need to get back on track with a clean slate. In all honesty I was a little hesitant since I have to show the real and messy photos to the world ...

Malaysia from Gillian Travis

The Foreign Office declared Sr Lanka a no go, so with 6 of us planning to meet up there we had some quick decisions to make.

The travel agents in principle agreed to refund most of the flights we had booked from the UK so changed our plans and met up in Kuala Lumpur

My daughter packed her bag, booked her flight on the train on the way to work, at the end of the day went straight to the airport.

Surprisingly the flights were not too expensive.

We met in KL airport, having had no time to make any ...

Mod City Center Quilt Along – Save the Date from Brown Bird Designs Quilts

EEEK!! I am so relieved to be able to announce the Mod City Center Quilt Along and to have this quilt pattern done. I have been tinkering with it for about a year now. I have decided to add more sizes to all the new patterns that I create for Brown Bird Designs, but that has left me with having to decide what the right size for a twin and a queen quilt is . . . For me this was a can of worms. Originally, when I wrote the twin size, it was way too long. But I didn’t figure that ...

The missing link – the Scrappier Double Pinwheel quilt from Brown Bird Designs Quilts

Ask and you shall receive… I really love hearing what you want to see more of. It helps me so much when planing. Sometimes I feel like I am throwing stuff on the wall to see what sticks. Last month I showed off the quilt I made using the incredible Hedge Rose fabrics by Kelly Panacci. To create it I used my free pattern, The Double Pinwheel Quilt. You can download that file by clicking here. However, since I have the hardest time using patterns and making the same quilt over and over again I changed it up quite a ...

Abecedario bordado a mano from La Vida en Patchwork

Abecedario bordado a mano

Spring Linen Table Runner from Brown Bird Designs Quilts

Easter Spring Time Linen Table Runner

I have been so delighted while creating this Linen Table Runner. It excites me because I have never made anything like it. This is my first time piecing with linen, second time using only solid fabrics, and I have never used a color palette like this before. These soft pastel linen fabrics have a subtle yet distinct difference to them. I am so happy with how this Spring Linen Table Runner turned out.

The fabrics are all Riley Blake Designs. They are a 55% Linen / 45% Cotton blend and that makes them perfect to make a light quilt or a ...

Nuevas letras bordadas T, H, K y L from La Vida en Patchwork

Nuevas letras bordadas T, H, K y L

Thread Catching from From the Strawberry Patch...

These measure 4.5" square and 5" in height.  Where do you toss your trimmed threads while sewing? What do you use as a thread catcher? I saw this adorable quilt-as-you-go one on a blog some time ago and kept the reference handy as an idea for the future. Well, as "they" say: the future is now. Indeed it is. I worked with fabric and colorful scraps that I had on hand and it went together

Perth from Gillian Travis

For a short time in 1982 I worked in Perth. It was a long time ago so I wanted to go back and wondered if I might remember anything of the city.

I don’t think I remembered much.

The weather was beautiful in Perth, hot and sunny all the time I was there.

Here are just a few of my photos

Dolphin watching in Mandurah

Walking in Kings Park, taking photos of plants and the magnificent view

Visiting Fremantle on Anzac Day

Walking along the beach, watching sunrises and sunsets.

Meeting the Quirky Quilters and having a Show and ...
