Sparkle Jane Finish: Blue Bargello from Wedding Dress Blue

Sparkle Jane has waited a long time for this finish.

She started the quilt about six years ago (age 13).  The piecing went well, but then it was time for quilting.  She started hand quilting it, got about half way and decided that she didn’t like the way it looked.

And TORE IT ALL OUT.  Painful!

And then put the quilt away.

But now it was time.  The quilting looks a lot like water over stones.  Which is perfect for the pattern.  Finish size is 82″ x 63″.

Bargello Quilt by Kathleen from Quilted Joy

Have you ever wondered where some designs come from and how they were named? I do sometimes. It helps me remember the name if nothing else. Bargello actually started as a needlepoint style also known as Florentine, Flame, or Hungarian Point. An early example is on chairs in the Bargello Museum in Florence, Italy, hence the name. Bargello quilts look very complicated, but some people say they are actually very easy to make. Others I’ve talked to would disagree. Whatever view you have, we can all agree that the quilt I’m showing you today is beautiful. This is ...

The Use of Hearts in Quilting by our Longarm Machine Renters from Quilted Joy

Have you ever looked and critically thought about the heart shape? Honestly, it doesn’t much look like an actual heart. I read once that the heart shape may have actually started as a leaf shape bringing to mind life and renewal. Regardless of where it comes from and what it initially meant, the heart is a permanent icon today. We see the use of this shape in quilting in many forms. You can applique it, piece it, or simply quilt it. In one way or another these renters added hearts to their quilts.

Next Step for Prism Path Baby Quilt from The Free Motion Quilting Project

Yes indeed, it's time to take the next step on the Prism Path baby quilt along. He he...this is both a baby quilt along because it's a baby quilt and because it's really short - just 6 weeks from start to finish!

Click Here to find Post #2.

This week we're piecing the strips sets and cutting pieces using a cool Bargello technique. I love this technique for piecing complex quilts that look like they are pieced from hundreds of little pieces. In fact, this is created with strip piecing and careful cutting.

If Prism Path ...

Cindy's Bargello from Night Owl Quilting

This stunning bargello quilt was made by Cindy.  The pattern she followed was called "Flamingo Bargello" by Chi Chi Quilt Designs.

Although this quilt would have finished up nicely with an allover design, it was telling me it wanted custom quilting.  A mixture of big relaxed feathers and straight lines play nicely together and highlight the movement in the quilt.

Here you can see the quilting clearly on the light beige backing Cindy sent.

Deciding where to put the feathers and lines and getting organized was my biggest challenge.  I took photos of the fabrics I wanted to group together ...
