Another Week, Another "Everything in the World" Baby Quilt! from Gefilte Quilt

I have a theory that Covid and/or the vaccine got a lot of people pregnant - I can hardly keep up with the baby onslaught! The last two posts showed some of my recent baby quilts, and here's the front of my newest:

Long before "gender-fluid" was a common phrase, I debated with myself about how girly or (why isn't boyly a word?) to make a baby quilt when the biologial sex was known.

And nowadays, of course, I'm even more conscious of stereotyping. There's a whole lot more girly fabric in the quilt world, than ...

Are You Experiencing a Baby Tsunami? from Gefilte Quilt

I don't know about your world, but in mine, there's a monumental Covid baby boom.

It's apparent that young adults didn't have anything better to do nine months ago - after making sourdough, resin art, beer and kombucha. They finally said, "What the heck!"

My favorite kind of quilt to make for potential and extant babies is an "Everything in the World" quilt. The theory behind this quilt is that, while all the baby experts say parents should talk to their babies constantly, they don't tell them what to say. "Aren't you a cutie-pie?" and ...

My First Tumbler Quilt! (Not Tumbling Blocks) from Gefilte Quilt

First, in case you are as confused as I was, a "Tumbler" quilt is  completely different from a "Tumbling Blocks" quilt!

"Tumbling Blocks" are made from 60 degree triangles and diamonds, and wind up with a 3D effect. They're great fun to look at, but technically can be a bear to make. I don't even remember how I pulled off the blocks below, from a Tokyo-themed quilt I made in the 90s, called "Sushi in the Sky with Diamonds."

I must have had a much higher tolerance for mitering in those days. On that same quilt, I also ...

Baby Quilt.....Minions from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

This is how I spent a few hours yesterday:

Minions....Baby Quilt

This is the panel BEFORE quilting:

The quilting brings these panels to life !

505 Spray

My favorite for spray basting quilts

Lots of BIG SWIRLS are FUN !

Brings a SMILE to my face !

Yummy flannel for the backing...

As soon as I get the binding on this,

it will be winging its' way cross country.

While loading hay this morning

I noticed this Blue Heron perched in a tree

in the barn lot:

They are such beautiful birds...

They spend their time fishing along the river.

A Sweet Baby Girl Quilt from Val's Quilting Studio

This Kinder Layer Cake of fabric by Windham Fabrics turned out to make the perfect quilt for our Kinder teacher who just had her first baby. I figured new mom received plenty of "baby things" so it was fun to make a bright and happy quilt her new daughter could use as toddler and beyond.
It measures 46"x53", so easy enough for her to drag around as she grows into it.

I used a bright flannel backing and love the checked green binding.
I had my daughter make me this quilt label and easily added it to the quilt ...

Renter Round Up for 2021 from Quilted Joy

Another year has passed, we’re all another year older, and its time for another Renter Round Up.  It hasn’t been the year that we were hoping for, but it wasn’t all bad either. One of the things I am grateful for is having renters here in the shop.  We see such a wide selection of quilt tops.  All different difficulty levels and colors coming from lots of different people at many different stages in their journey as quilters.

Here is a renter round up of some of the beautiful quilts that we saw this year. If you ...

babies and sunsets . . . from Count it *all* JOY!

Monday, I took a little time off and gave Joc a bit of a breather.  This time I took Ezra off her hands so she could shower and do some things she wanted to do.
Ummmmm, my pleasure!
Evidently I'm just the right sleep select comfort number.  Isn't he sweet??!  :)

And then Wednesday (because we knew we'd not be able to go out today ... we have our ministry's annual Pastor/Wife Appreciation banquet) I took off again.  (Because a five-day weekend wasn't enough.) And Todd and I hit the lake . . . again. The weather has just ...

celebrate on . . . from Count it *all* JOY!

I may have shared that I give as much time as my birthday wants to be celebrated. A week where you only work two days and have the next five free is as good a time to continue celebrating as any! I gave a whole post to the Tate Farms fun, but I'll condense the remainder of the long weekend here. Mostly.  I think.

Thursday, the weather continued to be beautiful, and since a wet, cool front was moving in on Friday, our regular boat day, Todd and I decided to go ahead and get our lake action in ...

let the festivities commence . . . from Count it *all* JOY!

It's BIRTHDAY weekend!!  Hip, hip!!  The fun started Thursday evening when I pulled up and there were two beautiful planters of my favorite fall flowers . . .
MUMS!  Aren't they pretty?  Todd knows me so well!

Friday we hit the lake around 11:30.  Even the fish must have known it was my birthday weekend! I actually pulled out my pole (Todd was catching them hand over fist, so to speak) and I did well.
I caught about eight (to Todd's twenty, but who's counting?).  Mine were GOOD sized!
The heron even squawked out a birthday greeting.  ;)

all the things . . . from Count it *all* JOY!

Remember that cute Halloween fabric I got a couple of weeks ago??
Really cute, right??  Guess what I found out on accident . . .
It GLOWS IN THE DARK!!!  Is that not the best?  You know what that means?
It means I went back and got MORE!  Haha!  And as per usual, I found something else I *needed* while I was there.

Joc sent me this photo during the week . . .
Ezra's little bed, all ready for little Ezra!  The pillow sham turned out so sweetly!

I've been so puzzled trying to figure out why, of my two hanging pots of ...

Science, Baby! quilt pattern from Flying Parrot Quilts

I am so thrilled to introduce you to my newest quilt pattern called Science, Baby! This pattern will be published in the 2022 Quilter’s Planner, and it’s got some awesome science in it, even if it doesn’t look like it at first glance! Before I tell you all about that, though, I have to tell you a little bit about how the design process.

I’ve had patterns in the 2019 and 2020 editions of the planner, and so when Lorinda, the owner, contacted me about a pattern for next year’s edition, I was super excited ...

Small comforts from The Academic Quilter

Hello all! If you are familiar with the Hands to Help challenge over at Confessions of a Fabric Addict, you know that this year's challenge is ending. I think this is the first time in a while that I have all the donation quilts finished by the end of the challenge. Yay me! I showed the two smaller quilts that I made for the challenge HERE, and today I have two (slightly) larger quilts that I've also finished:

The light has been really weird because we've had so much rain lately, and please ignore the fact that ...

Two babes in the woods from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone! It's yet another weekend, and it feels like spring on a regular basis now. We've also had some spring storms, so I guess next month there will be an abundance of flowers, right? It just happens that this week we got new gutters with leaf-resistant covers on them, which seems like it's just in time because our trees are just leafing out now. If past springs are any guide, one morning next week I'll get up and all the leaves will have filled in. And then I will do my happy dance, right there ...

Small updates on small things from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone! I hope you have been having a good week. It has been another busy one here, but today I hit a milestone: I have walked 150 kilometers since January 1. That's 93 miles! There's either something seriously wrong with me or I'm having a lot of stress. It may be both because I really wanted to hit this milestone today so I went out walking in the rain. At least it was warm-ish. Wet, though.

Today I just wanted to say hello to everyone so I just have a couple of small updates. I finished ...

Pandemic Porch Quilt Show, Days 36-39: Airplanes, Civil War, Play Castle, Flower Power from Gefilte Quilt

Day 36: Airplane Blanket This family favorite was made for my kids, in the late 90s, from a delightful print of animals flying airplanes.

The border features consecutive yellow triangles, called "flying geese," made into giant arrows with the help of a multi-colored stripe serving as each arrow's shaft.

Day 37: A Very Civil War
Our country survived the Civil War, and I hung this war-era quilt on November 3, just before the election, as a reminder to vote!
I found these blocks in a rural antique shop in upstate NY in the early 90s - there was a big ...

A New Baby Quilt! from Val's Quilting Studio

Nothing like the anticipation of a new baby to get one's sewing mojo back!
Pattern used: Summer Song by Villa Rosa Designs.
Quilt measures 44"x55".

I love watching a fat quarter bundle turn into a wonderful quilt.
For this one I used a Purples Bella Solid pack.
I've never made a commissioned quilt. But this was for a work friend who wanted something special for her new little niece. She requested solid purples with grays.
I don't think I've ever made a quilt from solids...and this one has quickly become a favorite!

I used ...

Bell Sleeve Top with Bubble Gauze Fabric from Tea Rose Home

I shared my Bubble Gauze Dress post not so long ago. I bought this mint green bubble gauze fabric at the same time when I bought the fabric for that dress. I wanted to sew a relaxed top with a little bit of flare and I finally found a pattern that spoke to me for this particular fabric. The pattern I used was Burda style 6266. There are three version of this top, and I honestly think they are all very pretty.

I have a short torso, so I decided to shorten the pattern by a few inches, but everything ...

Small distractions from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone! I hope you're all doing well today. Still hot and rainy here, so, you know, looking to start growing mushrooms on my north side any time now. Unbelievably, this weekend is our one-year anniversary in Baltimore. For some reason, this feels really momentous. Maybe it's the heat. Or the quarantine. Who could have known what the last year would bring?

This week I needed some distractions from everything that's going on, but I just didn't have the mental energy to work on anything important. Do you ever feel that way? You want to sew ...

How I Sewed This Navy Star Infant Dress from Craftcore

Last week, I sewed up this infant dress for my two-month-old daughter. No pattern; I just measured around her and cut and sewed. All the fabric stores are closed due to COVID-19, so I pulled all the fabrics from my stash:

Baby Abigail wearing her new grey and navy dress!
  • The grey fabric is quilting cotton. I had jussssst enough for this project with this little scrap piece. I’ve used this fabric often as an accent fabric, and I’m a bit sad that it’s all used up! Of course, I’m happy to use it up on ...
