Strings 2020 Wrap Up from Kat & Cat Quilts

Yes, just short of a year from it's kick off the 2020 string block drive is wrapping up. Thanks to the many of you who participated in this drive, like Beth T. who made the top above and Kathy C. who quilted it!

I love the gingerbread man backing this quilt! The rest of these were assembled by a combination of Pam M. and me and quilted by me.

The seven quilts here plus those previously posted bring us to a total of 23 out of an expected 24 from this drive. There is still one out in the ...

Strings and Reflection from Kat & Cat Quilts

Another week and another batch of string quilts! These six were quilted by me, but some of them were pieced by Pam. She helped out by piecing two great big boxes of blocks I sent her into 8 tops and sending them back. Great big thanks to Pam, she did a lovely job of piecing and pressing nice flat seams!

Also obviously thanks to those who sent in cool backing fabrics for these quilts. Patients and families love to look at the backs and often connect to them.

There have been quite a few of these string quilts so far ...

Winter Blues Wrap Up from Kat & Cat Quilts

Almost twelve months later, the Winter Blues quilts from the Nov/Dec 2019 block drive are all done! (Hey, it's less than a year, right?)

All 5 of the quilts in this post were tops made by Gail C. and quilted by me.

I love Gail's beautiful, intricate piecing style and her eye for color. Bonus, she's a local to east Texas!

She usually sends several tops kitted up with backing and binding for each drive we do.

In case you missed it, Covered in Love is rapidly approaching the 700 quilt landmark.  I'm amazed how ...

Winter Blues Round 3 from Kat & Cat Quilts

Remember this block drive? These are the Winter Blues blocks from last Nov/Dec's block drive. When I got my quilting energy back in September the first thing I did was to get these finally finished!

There are three quilts in this post, these were all assembled and quilted by my from blocks sent in by all of you during the drive.  I let the corners flip over so you can see the backings. Thank you for all the backings that have been sent in recently! They are being put to use finishing out block drive quilts.

Each of ...

First Round of Puzzle Block Quilts from Kat & Cat Quilts

The first of the finished quilts from November and December's block drive with the puzzle blocks are ready to go! This first one (above) was assembled and quilted by Beryl. She answered the call in May when I asked for volunteers to help finish block drive quilts!

Bonnie sent in her blocks already sewn into a top with nice borders, along with backing. I transferred it to Kathy and she quilted it. Thanks ladies!

The remaining quilts on this page, six of them, were assembled and quilted by me.

You can see that many of the quilts are bound ...

Stringing Along from Kat & Cat Quilts

Happy Friday folks, we made it another week deeper into the summer! It's officially hot and humid outside, not good weather for anybody.

Some of you might remember the tutorial I posted several months ago for a scrap-busting block that used 2.5" and 1.5" strings.  The main block is the one in the quilt below, with the black border, and the bonus blocks made the quilt above with the blue border.

It's a great way to use up a whole bunch of strings in a hurry and make cozy scrap quilt in the process! These two ...

World Village from Kat & Cat Quilts

If you've been following Covered in Love for very long then you've definitely seen these "village" quilts before. Mina makes them and I love what they represent! Mina says "the block is from the Quiltville site and is a free pattern called Happy Scrappy Houses.  It is so simple and only uses 3 sizes."

The top two on this page were sent in completely finished by Mina, the second were tops that I finished.

These 4 quilts were part of a delivery to the hospital last week of 32 quilts, which pushed us to a total of 650 ...

Overdue Good Sitches from Kat & Cat Quilts

PSA: I had a couple of lovely finished quilts arrive from North Dakota today. For as long as I have been keeping a spreadsheet CiL has never had anything come from ND! There's no return address or note, if you sent them could you send me an email so I can say thanks?

Happy weekend! I just finished 3 quilts from my do. Good Stitches group, the Nurture circle, for Covered in Love.  This big and bright scrappy quilt was made by the group in January from 2.5" scrap strips.

This quilt was from the August Nurture circle ...

(More) UFOs Finished for CiL from Kat & Cat Quilts

Welcome back to more tops that were sent in to be finished for Covered in Love! The top one, with the pretty HSTs was sent in by Jan O. and finished by me.  I LOVE the color scheme and the cool modern design.

Next, Nancy C. sent in this masculine quilt using some small fabric scraps.  It looks like it might be partially based on a Crazy Mom Quilts pattern.

And finally, this bright and wild (mostly) batik churndash top from Priscilla. All three cozy, cheerful quilts that will be perfect for families in the hospital!

I hope you had ...

UFOs Finished for CiL from Kat & Cat Quilts

Kathy broke out of quarantine this week to return these quilts to me! She took the tops that various quilters sent in and finished them into beautiful, cuddly quilts for CiL.

These hand-pieced lonestars were sent in by Holly and I added the slim flower borders. It made such a sweet little quilt!

This quilt with the pretty, bright yellow and red flower fabrics came from Johanna.  I made a pieced backing from yellow and flower-themed fabrics to match.

This cute, almost vintage-looking nine patch top came from Julie W.  She donated a group of tops I posted about before ...

May-June CiL {Split 9 Patch Round 2} from Kat & Cat Quilts

Hello quilters! Sorry I mixed up my days last week and left you all high and dry on the plan for May-June.  I'll talk about it in this post while you enjoy the pictures from the Split 9 Patch Drive wrap up.  The top 5 quilts on this page were assembled and quilted by me. In total this drive made 14 quilts!

Traditionally (for the past 3 years I think) Covered in Love has taken a break from block drives this time of year. This isn't so much to give you a break as to give me a ...

Star Struck: Round 4 from Kat & Cat Quilts

Assembled and quilted by Tammy
Just in time (nearly) to start making more star blocks last year's July/August block drive red white and blue quilts are done. All 20 of them!

quilting close up

Tammy helped finish off some of the last of these. She always picks thematically matched quilting.

Blocks by Gail, assembled and quilted by Tammy
One of the big contributors to last summer's drive was a local quilter named Gail who sent in enough blocks for 6 quilts.

I'm including lots of closeups of this quilt because it's one of my favorites ...

New Directions from Kat & Cat Quilts

Tops by Priscilla

Before all the Covid stuff started CiL was working on a small new project that I'm excited to tell you about! As some of you may know, when CiL started years ago I was working at one hospital. Then, after getting my NP license I moved to the other large area hospital (literally next door).  Together, these medical systems serve a large rural area covering much of North East Texas.

CiL has continued, all this time, to distribute quilts only at the first hospital. The program is very well establish and flourishing there and we have ...

Count the Stars: Round 3 from Kat & Cat Quilts

FYI
During the COVID 19 pandemic Covered in Love continues to make quilts to support grieving families when relatives pass away in the hospital. This is something that will, unfortunately, probably become even more necessary in the coming weeks and months. When loved ones pass with limited or no visitation and there can be no funeral or viewing of the body something tangible to hold onto to mark the transition becomes even more important.

We are not, as an organization, sewing masks, gowns, or other personal protective equipment at this time.  Many other organizations are filling that role and so ...

In Memoriam from Kat & Cat Quilts

This weekend's post starts off with some sad news. Last month the online quilting community suddenly lost a great charity supporter and very special quilter when Paula B. passed away after a brief illness.  Paula contributed to multiple charities, including sending in 5 quilt tops to Covered in Love over the past couple years.

This top was sent in anonymously

Besides blocks drives, the other major source of quilts for CiL is quilters who send in quilt tops ready to be quilted, bound, and delivered to the hospital.

Paula B. was an exceptional quilter with an eye for color ...

Christine's Quilts from Kat & Cat Quilts

Late post going up today, sorry about that! I had to be up super early the past 2 days with my nursing students for their first clinical days and Friday snuck up on me.

These 6 quilt tops came to me from Christine in Florida for Covered in Love and I finished them recently.

Christine sent me all of her tops kitted up with backings and binding to match, perfectly ready to go!

This scrappy top, above, was the one that became my inspiration for my scrap buster string top. You can see the tutorial I uploaded for that here ...

Sweet Valentines Quilts from Kat & Cat Quilts

Happy weekend and Happy Valentines Day to those of you who celebrate!  I'm celebrating a huge quilt delivery to the hospital this week for Covered in Love.  On Tuesday I took up 48 quilts!

This round of donations included a lot of donated tops that I finished off, including these three from Julie W. in my Nurture Circle group.

This one with the soft colors and sweet, small prints is my favorite, in case you couldn't tell.

Next up, a very different bright and scrappy quilt.  I like how the alternating blocks of quarter square triangles make the ...

Some Fall Colors in the Winters from Kat & Cat Quilts

Hello and happy weekend quilters! Texas is having its usual insane winter weather. 80 degree days and snow in the same week. I hope things are going well wherever you are.  In memory of my favorite, albeit the most fleeting season, here are a batch of Fall colored quilts.

Teresa sent me this Fall top with the leaves. I added borders and Kathy quilted it.  I had the perfect backing to go with it, too.

Pam C. sent in 2 matching crazy blocks quilts with green sashing and Kathy quilted them as well.

I love some of the surprises in ...

Red, White, and Blue: Batch 2 from Kat & Cat Quilts

Yes, the next four quilts from last summer's red, white, and blue star blocks drive are done!  (You can see the first batch here). These 4 were assembled and quilted by me.

Thank you to those of you left nice comments on my last post. It's heartwarming to hear how much participating in CiL means to so many of you.

Here you can see one of the great fabrics I had donated to go with these, featuring fireworks!

This quilt below is a collection of more "old fashioned" looking blocks, mostly with tan or khaki backgrounds.

These were ...
