A Finish and a Restart on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

So I'm happy to say that the 20 Minute a Day rule is working ... mostly.  I won't say I've been perfect this month but I've gotten a lot more sewing in than I have been....baby steps!  Because of that, I can announce ... drum roll ...that Tessa's Mosaic is finally completed.  LORDY, I'm so happy to announce it!

The Facts

  • 36 in by 24 in

  • Machine applique/pieced, machine quilted

  • Commercial Cotton, hand dyed cotton by the artist

  • Cotton, polyester thread

  • Original pieced based on a photograph taken by April Meyer Smith

I really ...

20 Min a Day on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

An ongoing theme of this blog is how to motivate yourself to create.  I often wonder if it's a personal
flaw in me or if everyone has a hard time getting projects done from start to finish.  Paul, my husband, thinks it's all about creating a habit.  He's an artisan woodworker but recently he took two months off to give my Painted Lady a much-needed make-over.  The last time he painted her was in 1994.  Now that she's done though, it was time for him to get back into the woodshop.  He says it's like ...

snails a plenty from Making A Lather

After working on my 5 quilts, even the parts that have languished. It was time out for fun sewing. I am starting another round of snails trail. I need to cut some more, which I find meditative, and then, I get to line up the triangles which is nice and tidy, then, I have the challenge of making the colors turn which is good for mental acuity, then, I get to wind bobbins which is satisfying, then, I get to chain sew which is efficient, then, I get to iron it flat which is just like Christmas morning surprises, then ...

Get On Board with Sewing Blog Hop on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

Earlier this summer, Melva was kind enough to invite me to participate in the
Get on Board with
Sewing
Blog Hop.  It is in celebration of September which is National Sewing Month.  I thought it was a great idea because #1 I think sewing is tremendous and it's always been a big part of my life and #2  I could set it as a goal to finally finish up Tessa's Mosiac which I've been puttering through since May.  I've puttered through projects before but with this one I've taken it to a new level. Not ...

WIP Roundup from Live a Colorful Life

First of all, I am done with documenting all the quilts I have completed. Along the way there were some quilt tops that I finished but passed on to others to complete so those are not included.

The final total: 227! I can hardly believe it. They are labeled by name of quilt and by year completed. Live a Colorful Life Quilt Diary

As I became rather obsessed with finishing that project, actual sewing fell by the wayside. So yesterday I caught up on the Moda Blockheads 4 blocks, also known as my Peanut Butter and Jelly quilt.

Block 20 ...

Work Night on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

Before

Backing layered with Warm & Natural

Spray Basted

After -  Quilting Pattern Being Made

So today I said to myself - Self, You can write a post or you can finally get into that studio and layer up the mosaic.  I had been sitting all day so off to the studio I went.  Since "Everything is content" I took photos to prove that I actually did it!  It took a good half hour just to get the room ready to spray baste!

Under things I like....The backing for this quilt is from Joann Fabric.  It's from their premium quilting fabric ...

blocks found from Making A Lather

My Granddaughter was here for a visit and decided to reorganize my extra room. I had no idea what she was doing, until it was too late. I use that room for a holding cell of blocks ready to make into tops and tops ready to be quilted, and unfortunately, as storage for whatever I don't know where to home them. I knew that this little set back, for me, was probably the reason I had lost my rhododendron mystery blocks. This week, when it was raining, I asked my hubby to accompany me to that room and make ...

wedding ring block from Making A Lather

I started this wedding ring, or crown and thorns, with a bag of scraps here. I have mostly worked on them as recreational sewing from time to time. I think it is time to put them into the ufo closet and give them a break. I have 20 squares and I would like to have 30.  I need to find other scraps and cut, to be able to go on with this quilt. That is more than recreational sewing. I have other quilts I am committed to finishing, and a garden harvest coming to picking time. So, off it will ...

All Hands on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

"You know if you get up and sew you'll have something to blog about for Off the Wall Friday"

So my husband said to me last weekend as I was binge-watching 3 seasons of "Glow Up" a British make-up competition show (Netflix - I highly recommend seasons 2 and 3 ..grin).  God really blessed me when he put that man in my path.  He is so right!!  So I got up and tackled my studio.

First I had to clean it from top to bottom.  All the remnants of orange, green, and beige got put away.  Then, I had ...

just a few more from Making A Lather

I thought I was done with the waffle stamp blocks for the month. I needed to cut 1 1/2 inch squares for the easy breezy blocks I am making. While I was digging around, I found more short pieces and just thought I would sew a couple. Then, after making a few sets, I found shirt strips, and thought I would sew them together for future 4 or 9 patches. And finally, why not add a few more waffle stamp blocks.

It was a 1 1/2 inch kind of day.

strip sets ready to cut for the middles ...

waffling from Making A Lather

I cut several sets of 1 1/2 inch strips for waffle stamp blocks in blue for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. But, I ran out of the pieced middles. I thought I had made some ahead. sigh...

Sew, my sewing session involved sewing short strips together in sets of 5. I do enjoy doing this. It is a therapeutic way to sew and go with the flow. I have used most of my short strips and will have to adopt another benchmark for sewing these strips. I haven't been cutting scraps lately, maybe that will sort ...

Sew Tessa on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

Snowflakes turned into Queen Lace

Yes, the saga of the Stitched Mosaic continued this week.  I spent most of my sewing time, ripping out sections, redoing applique patterns, and getting them sewed back together.  I'm so glad I did.  In the quiet of my studio, it was much easier to get the curves just right...not to mention most of the seams to meet.  I'm not trying to be overly fussy about it though.  I think the imperfections in the mosaic make it much more interesting!  (Here is the original photo inspiration in case you've forgotten)

obviously ...

A Sew Sew Day on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

Using start for turn under applique
Well today I said enough is enough, I'm taking some time to just quietly sew.  My studio misses me. Hmmm well if I am being truthful, I'm quite sure, it's forgotten my name.  Luckily, my boss agreeded with me and gave me some VTO (Voluntary Time Off!)  It felt genuinely decadent to go sew when I should be working.

Once I got everything plugged in, I sat down and my body just went ahhhhhhhhh.  After a week of sewing at Marc Adams at a work station that was not efficient or ...

fair and square project from Making A Lather

I knew I was going to need more projects to take for our Friday and open sews coming up in April. I decided to dig out Fair and square and see what was next for moving this project along. The first thing I did was check the blog posts for any mention of this quilt. And I was surprised to read that this project has been a mystery with me from the beginning. I wrote this in 2019  about a string puzzle

Admittedly, it has been awhile since I sat at the treadle to make string blocks. But, when I ...

WIP 4 Pick up Sticks from Sew Sunshine

My bag eliminating continues. If you have been following me this year I have not been cleaning and organizing per say but I have been keeping things neatly together over the years. What I am finding out is that I have tons of fabrics filed away in bags waiting for whatever it is to be finished. I keep the relevant coordinates together or shades or whatever. This does have its advantages as I can pull it up and not have to rematch etc. However, it also has its pitfalls. I just commented to another blogger that I loved her blue ...

dart progress in sections from Making A Lather

Once I got this far with this quilt, I wanted to keep going. I started putting them together by color sections. I had a few I needed to correct the sizes on the ends. I tried marking the rows as I added them but, I would skip one and throw the next one off track. I made this during sew groups, so I was probably talking too much haha.

dart -a free pattern.

Hopefully by the end of the week I will have it together.

Baby Steps on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

I really want to thank everyone for their kind and encouraging comments last week.  It was a clear reminder that we do NOT create in a vacuum.  Life is so much easier when you have people rooting for you!

As I promised I did spend a Sunday afternoon sewing up the color exercise.  I finally decided that there was no right or wrong answer on how the columns were to be sewn together.  So chunky black columns it is!  It took longer than expected to square up the pieced columns since with that many seams those suckers tend to stretch ...

Wip 2 it! from Sew Sunshine

47" x 54"

Little creatures from Cori Dantini line of fabric

I have learned that I do not really do well by organizing my sewing area. I clean up a bit and don't let it get too out of control as I go. This works best because in organizing in the past I lose things? Am I the only one? I put all things nice and neat somewhere but that is not where my mind saw it last so I have trouble finding it again to actually use.

This year I want to use the patterns and rulers I ...

Back in the Studio on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

As you know, I've been struggling mentally over the last few months.  It's amazing how much a little anxiety and lack of sleep will upend your life.  If anything, I have a new appreciation for people who suffer from them chronically.  Luckily with each passing week, I'm feeling better.  That said, I promised my critique partner, Barbara that I would get back into the studio and ya know actually get something done.  Soooooo I pulled out the easiest WIP I had to finish.  My sister told me to start with baby steps and since she's a ...
