WIP's List!, Basket Case Finish, Magpie Art and Squirrels from Canadian Needle Nana

Breakfast in front of the fire.

And from another angle. Smile says me; I am says he.
Our Christmas was certainly never busy. I used to feel the need to deep clean everything before the big day but I won't bother this year with just the three of us here. Of course, some deep diving into totes and storage drawers would be a good thing but I have to be in the mood for that. Perhaps I'll feel like it more when the Christmas things have to go away.

Basket Case has moved along nicely just this week ...

Whimsical Foxes, Applique, Christmas Quilting Tutorials, Netflix Viewing from Canadian Needle Nana

You know I like whimsical...especially involving mice, fox, deer, dogs, bunnies; well I guess any critters actually. I love the details in this scene below.

Snug little fox with her knitting, cup of tea and pizza slice. And note the dream catcher on the wall and the tiny cowboy boots.  Does a scene like this make you feel cosy and snug too? As far as I can find out this illustration is from a children's book called Jezeva Kucica by Branko Copic.  Translation, The Hedgehog's House. If you know more about the artist, please let me know ...

Pumpkin Soup, Auction Bidding, Binding Stitching, Christmas Quilts, Mouse Update from Canadian Needle Nana

When in the work world, I often lamented not enough time for my hobbies. I used to think I would spend all morning reading for instance, when I retired and had nothing else to do. However, to sit around reading in the mornings still doesn't work for me. My days must still have busyness in them but, what do you know, there is no end it seems to the things to do. Filling the hours is not only not a problem, it is uncanny how busy we seem to be and this is even in a semi-lockdown situation.

Autumn ...

Halloween Colours, Poetry, Tiny Yellow Triangles, A Show to Watch from Canadian Needle Nana

Dylan Thomas

                                       Especially when the October wind

with frosty fingers punishes my hair,

Caught by the crabbing sun I walk on fire

And cast a shadow crab upon the land

No shadow crab cast that day. Hubby and Murphy enjoy one of our daily walks in cloudy weather. Someone asked and yes, we walk no matter the weather. We have all the gear.

Suddenly it seems, all our trails are leafy ones.

And wild autumn New England asters are everywhere! From this meadow area, our trail leads through those trees to the left of the white birch branch, an area ...

Summertime: When? from Quilting Solutions

This summer has been busy.  Since COVID destroyed all of our travel plans DH built a vegetable garden at waist height.  Wow, I don't even mind weeding it.  It is so easy when you are not bending over or crawling on the ground.  The cucumber died, but the zucchini made up for the loss. My rhubarb, which has struggled for 4 years, "dying" every summer, survived one more transplant into the "box" and is loving it there.  I have great hopes for rhubarb pie next year.  Then we had 22º weather and a snowstorm in the first week of ...

Two Beauty Products, Wisdom, Foxy Visit, Triangle Quilt Decisions from Canadian Needle Nana

These three things below were birthday gifts and I thought I'd share them with you. I've mentioned Eckhart Tolle before and how much I love his writing. Saying that though, it is kind of involved in a way and you need to keep your wits about you if you are to take anything away. But I do enjoy his talk about the need to banish negative thoughts and as he puts it, making sure the present now is your friend not your enemy.

I think I'm addicted to lip balms so anything to do with keeping lips ...

Gardening and Applique Rewards, Too Old for April Cornell?, Fabric Ambassadors Needed from Canadian Needle Nana

This week was a whoosh. My guess is I must have been having a whale of a time, never mind just fun.

Is it because I was a teacher that September still feels like a fresh start somehow. Because I do seem to have that "new start" feeling. Kind of invigorating and here's hoping it lingers. And that's another thing I love about living where there are seasons. As each rolls around it provides a perfect opportunity for a new beginning.

I've been rewarded for my gardening efforts in two tiny ways.

First of all, the Madagascar ...

Nature New to Me, Autumn Flowers, Christmas Creeping In from Canadian Needle Nana

Though the air was quite warm almost moist feeling, the look of the landscape yesterday morning was dark and gloomy. Definitely a fall look to things though not a feel. I spotted the first of the wild asters, an autumn flower. So still lots of growing things to enjoy for a while longer. Like this orange/rust blanket flower type (not sure which it is as I've lost the packet, grrr) in the garden, another hardy perennial that is spreading well.

Here is a new to me bug which I enjoyed seeing up close. And he seemed to like ...

September Hello, Free Patterns, Journal Writing, Turtle Family from Canadian Needle Nana

Hello September, may the new month bless you with love, happiness & good health https:/… | Hello september images, Hello september quotes, Welcome september images

I made a hearty soup with the leftover pasta sauce. I've never used it for a soup base before but it makes so much sense to do so. It has many flavours and spices and with added broth and vegetables as well as kidney beans, it was quite good. I had made another whole wheat loaf in the bread machine so with a slice of that, we had a filling supper.

On my make this week list is twice baked potatoes and to use a large piece of halibut I bought. I find fish doesn't hold up well ...

The View and Visitors At Our Place from From My Carolina Home

It was an extraordinary morning just yesterday, with an abundance of wildlife in the early morning fog.  I didn’t get photos of the five deer that were grazing in the meadow, as they went into the forest before the camera could boot up.  Fog is a frequent morning visitor here, and I love how it delineates the layers of hills across the valley and the mountain ridge in the distance.  Photo taken from our veranda.

September in the Garden at FromMyCarolinaHome.com

Mere moments after I shut the camera back down, My Sweet Babboo said there were three foxes coming towards the house.  I jumped up ...

Perfect Ontario Summer and August Day, 2020 from Canadian Needle Nana

Sometimes I get down on myself because I'm not as productive as I used to be and still have in my head that I should be. For instance, there's the matter of my photos. With Windows 10 I can create albums which would be such a terrific asset when trying to find just the right photo to insert in this here blog. I started doing it, was excited about it and then the will to keep doing it drifted off across an ocean somewhere. But the idea of it still nags at me. I really must get that ...

Happiest Flower, With a Will, There's a Way, Continuous Small Treats from Canadian Needle Nana

First of all, what I made with those ingredients I showed in the last post...Scotcheroos. One of my facebook friends posted a recipe for them that does not use corn syrup to our All Day Sweets Pinterest board. I love anything with marshmallow in it so of course, I stuck with marshmallows rather than honey. These were a great treat and I shared them too with the little grandson hence the sprinkles.

My bread machine turned out an acceptable loaf of whole wheat/oat bread on Monday. I've been making a loaf a week and so far we ...

July Bits and Bobs- Bird, Bunny, Butterfly, Blooms, Blocks, Bel Canto from Canadian Needle Nana

It's turning into one of the hottest summers on record here just outside Ottawa, Canada. Several days have broken a 100 year old record. Of course, it is the humidity that people complain the most about as there has been lots of that too.  I find it saps my energy when it hits a certain point and working outside becomes uncomfortable. That being said, it is cooler today with continuing sunshine so promising to be a beautiful late July day.

No veranda stitching lately but lots inside under one or another of the ceiling fans. I finished Melva's ...

quilts, kids, and critters . . . from Count it *all* JOY!

Still slogging away in the new un-normal.  I don't know about anyone else, but it all still feels so surreal. Work is normal (hours), so there's that, but nothing else feels the same.  Strange.

I've been working off and on in the Nook.  Our stitcher's group collaborated on a quilt for one of our ladies who's been diagnosed with breast cancer.  Everyone contributed blocks (á la Lori Holt), one of our very talented ladies (and one of my affirmation group besties -- Sarah) did the layout and made it into a marvelous flimsy, and another of ...

Crazy Critters, Summer Flowers, Stitching and Strawberries from Canadian Needle Nana

A walk around the trails this morning, Murphy pulling hard on the lead. Something interesting had strolled in a zigzag fashion before us. We later looked at deer and unknown paw prints streaking the muddy area of the pond. Rather large...perhaps we don't want to know what made them.

Mr. Toad, in the back yard, giving me a wide smile.
I swear it has its own little ecosystem back there and different from the pond area.  There are frogs in the pond and no snakes that I've seen.  The back yard has toads and garter snakes.

Important Inspiration, Another Thankful Thursday List from Canadian Needle Nana

I love being the first one up in the morning.
Doing all the tiny chores to start the day. With those done, lately I've been heading out to the veranda with my cup of tea and just sitting drinking it all in (literally and figuratively).   It being the summer-ness of it all with the greens, flowers, bees, birds and blue sky.
Just now two ravens checked out the water tub, took turns taking rather dainty sips for the size of those beaks, and then flew silently, swiftly low to the ground up the laneway.  What will those two get ...

More Buhl and Fauna from Humble Quilts

My lighting isn't so good as the sun goes down, but I did manage to make my bud centers acceptable to me. I figure once it is quilted and washed they will not need to be perfect.
Two sections done! It is likely getting bloggy boring, but feels so good to be making progress!
I got a package of goodies in from Superior. Too bad it wasn't more exciting then sewing machine needles!!

You will have to look close, but this was my first sighting of fawns this past week! When we see them we know to keep ...

Patchwork Maple Leaves, Hand Piecing Stars, Free Pattern from Canadian Needle Nana

A special day. It is Canada Day today Wednesday, July 1.  I have a couple of Canadian things to share. One of the Quilt Bible blocks is a maple leaf, rather an iconic symbol of Canada. It pleases me to see how many maple trees are growing on this property.  I pieced one block to get a hang of it and in colours that match the others. A couple of things could have been done differently so I guess I'm still learning.

Then I thought of making one to match the Solidarity blocks, in reds and pinks.  After all ...

Free Online Word Games, Appliqued Hearts, Cheeky Squirrel, More June Blooms from Canadian Needle Nana

Mister sun has been blazing all week.

I've been outside stitching on the veranda every day. I've also been swimming and so glad for the exercise of it. All this time outside has made me think of how our winters really do make us hibernate to a certain extent. For the most part a happy hibernation luckily.
I'm noticing this uptick in outside activities is also making me feel better about this isolation.  Things are gradually opening but for folks in our age range, there are still warnings and precautions to be heeded. But just the thought ...

June Blooms, Patchwork Blocks and Relishing Sunshine from Canadian Needle Nana

Quarantined still; however a few restrictions are relaxing which is giving me mixed feelings.  I'm adopting a wait and see attitude about it as much as I would love to hug certain people.

It's going to be another happy week in the garden. Every day now something new is opening.
More iris blooming...this one not at all showy like the purples.
A little hard to appreciate their colours which are delicate. There are two large bunches of this Yellow Flag Iris here.
And all the sun we've been enjoying encouraged the rose bushes that border the ...
