Weaving ’till the Bitter End! from a daily dose of fiber

If you’re a weaver, you probably know that this isn’t an ideal end to a weaving project! I have been avoiding finishing up my looper rug project because I knew I was running out of warp. Silly, right? Like the warp fairy would come in the middle of the night and add 12″…. In all the years that I have been using the loopers, I never remember to add enough “take up” for the warp. (That means that the loopers are fat and take up a lot of room and thus warp.) The result is that I have ...

Ciboulette Stitches finished from Quilting & Learning

It's done! My project for Sue Stones' Stitch Club 2020 is finished. I really enjoy the time that I have to stitch.

Ciboulette Stitches

Here it is! I'm really happy with the finished project. I had planned to only have one flower but it really needed more, so now there are three.

Ciboulette Stitches finished!
Here is a close up of the flowers.

Close up of Ciboulette flowers

My model for the chive flower comes from my front garden. It hasn't received much attention but I love  that the chives grow without my effort - my favourite kind ...

recent weaving from Ellyn's Place

I've had a couple of orders for hand woven towels lately, in beautiful colors requested by the customers. First for Sarah....

I'd really love to see Sarah's kitchen where these will live!
Then these for Nicole.....

These were all woven in 8/2 cotton from Webs on my rigid heddle loom (double threads warped in a 10 dent heddle, double weft as well for inquiring minds).

And now my loom is empty, but not for long, I'm sure!

Blog plus Vlog from Rose Prairie Quilts and Farm

We are half way through 2020 and personally I hope the second half is better than the first but right now in the United States and here in Oklahoma it's not.

I'm remaining to stay home, no eating out or any indoor crowds and wearing my mask every time I go out.

The good thing about spending more time home I have to say is I've gotten my creative mojo back this past month.

And also has given me time to think about how I can blog more and improve what I'm trying to share.

So ...

A Little of This….A Little of That! from a daily dose of fiber

My concentration is still iffy but I have managed to get a few things done and a lot started!

One fun, little project I have been doing is making pillowcases. Knitters love making socks, weavers love making hand towels and quilters love making pillowcases. We have always used bolster pillows on our bed and when we were first married, I embroidered our initials on them. When I got over stitching our initials, I bought unusual cases. But it was the wonderful quiltmaker, Jane Sassaman who really inspired me. Scroll to the bottom of this blog to see the delightful cases ...

Last of the Tea Towels! from Thread Head

I finished weaving the last set of tea towels from kits I bought from Jane Stafford Textiles in January (I had originally thought these would be a year long project, but I was so glad I had bought them all when life changed).

Fresh off the loom - the kit made 8 towels, each over 30" long before washing.

I added about 18" extra warp, and still had plenty of cotton leftover when finished.

Fresh off the loom the fabric looked like this-

the white line (crochet ...

Keeping Busy from Thread Head

I probably should be cleaning my house, but instead I am spending time making things.

These are the Stay at Home Sampler blocks from Temecula Quilt Co on Instagram, 14 - 3" blocks so far.

I made a stitchery block from Marg Low Designs - it is one of the blocks from the Love and Hugs from Australia quilt along on Facebook. I always wanted to try out a little stitched block, and this was lot of fun. I enlarged the pattern to make an 8" block and turned it into a little wallhanging. It is 10"x12".

I spun up a ...

2020 AtoZ...Letter H...Off the Top of My Head from CollectInTexas Gal

Letter H...Heddles

Heddles are weaving loom needles and a weavers threading nightmare.  Multiply threading one needle by...let's be conservative and say 50....times 4 Harnesses.  Harnesses being the frames that hold top and bottom rails that the needles slide on.  Yes, they are moveable and threaded one at a time through the center of each vertical needle.  A threading tool with a hook on the end is used to pull threads through the eye.
Briefly, heddles are essential pieces of a weaving loom whether they be on a Harness Rail or a Ridgid Heddle frame.  I have ...

More Tea Towels from Thread Head

I finished another set of tea towels.

This is from another kit from Jane Stafford Textiles - Sassy Brassy Tea Towels, made from organic cottolin (a 60/40 cotton/linen blend). These were for me to learn about log cabin weaving, and it turned out to be much easier than I thought it would be.
The kit made seven towels with plenty of extra yarn. Each towel is different (more details can be found on my Ravelry page).

These are how they looked fresh off the loom - about 7 yards. I still have a small section of fabric leftover, just have ...

Ending March In Baby Pink...Blue-Green-Yellow-Purple from CollectInTexas Gal

Baby Blankets have been made on my sewing machine, embroidery machine, quilting machine, knitting machine and crochet needles.  They have been made with quilting cottons, flannel, fleece and stitched with quilting threads, embroidery threads and embellished with buttons, beads and more.

The recipients include my grandchildren, nieces, nephews, charity groups and the babies of those who have purchased them in my shop.

So, as you might imagine, I have quite a collection of all things 'Baby' including a Baby Pattern Binder.  The baby shown in the photo is from one of my collected publications Patons Baby Choice...Paton's Wikipedia ...

Garage Makeover...New Loom Room from CollectInTexas Gal

Over the years the garage has been a parking space for about everything except a vehicle.  It has also been a source of contention as a trap/catchall for overflow from one Studio or the other.  Both of the people in our household can take just so much of a chaotic overflow before a major cleanout becomes necessary.  That cleanout happened last month....just in time for another makeover.
Due to the...hopefully...temporary closing of Sue's Fiber Arts Studio at the Chicken Farm Art Center, any weaving done on Sparrow was going to be done at home.  It ...

Keep Going from Thread Head

I don't need to be told twice to stay home. I am happy at home. I can always find lots to do (and I have plenty of crafting supplies!). I can't wait to have a place to sew again. The basement renovations are coming along nicely, and I will end up with a wonderful space.

I am making the crafts that I can do last as long as possible.

Weaving tea towels is going well, I am about half way done.

I learned a new type of knitting - twined knitting.

I am knitting a pair of mittens with ...

More Tea Towels from Thread Head

I put another set of tea towels on the loom.

This is another kit from JST, called Sassy Brassy Log Cabin. I bought a few different weaving kits to learn new weaving techniques (this one is log cabin weaving), and now that we are renovating the basement I am glad to have something to make. Sewing on the dining room table is definitely not like sewing with a proper cabinet, so I won't be able to do too much sewing for a while - I was able to bring the weaving loom upstairs, but the sewing machine cabinet is too ...

Woven Tea Towels from Thread Head

I finished weaving, and hemming the 9 towels from the JST kit - Country Renaissance Boucle towels

They were really enjoyable to weave, and because they are woven at 12 picks (threads) per inch, they were very quick to weave.

All the towels are unique. The kit was very generous - I had lots of boucle cotton leftover.

Here are the towels fresh off the loom - about 9 yards. The towels were woven to 30", plus 2" hems with cotolin in a gold colour (it didn't come in the kit, luckily I had a coordinating colour smooth thread).

I used a ...

Inkle Woven Belt from Thread Head

I finished the inkle weaving project I started last March.

I ended up with about 2.5 yards of 1" wide braid. I am calling it a belt for now - maybe one day it will become something else. It was my sample project for the loom. I had put it away when renovations started last year, and it was unearthed when basement renovations started this year. Turns out it was really enjoyable to weave with the little loom.

I bought the loom from a local museum that was having a clear out.

My son made a few shuttles for it ...

March Goals from Thread Head

Time to plan projects for this month.

For my One Monthly Goal for March I plan on weaving tea towels with this kit from Jane Stafford Textiles - it is the Country Renaissance Boucle Tea Towel Kit.

I started March 1st getting the warp ready, and have started weaving. The kit makes 9 towels.

I also plan on finishing the Mystery Gnome that I started last month,

and I want to finish this Inkle Loom band weaving project that I started last year. This was my test piece for the new loom. I want to make some braid ...

Woven Fabric from Thread Head

I finished weaving fabric for my Mom.

I ended up with over 6.5 yards of fabric, that is 18" wide. It should be plenty to make 6 chair cushions.

I didn't have too much loom waste.

Fresh off the loom it was about 7 yards and 19" wide.

This is the fabric fresh off the loom. I was so surprised how different the two sides looked when I took the fabric off the loom - the side I saw while weaving was the plainer side (it didn't seem that plain when I was weaving it). I don't ...

inkle weaving from Ellyn's Place

Because a girl can never have too many hobbies, I've added inkle weaving to my list. Several months ago, my friend Chris introduced me to these little band looms. Off we went to the weaving store where I acquired one of my own (for the record, I also talked Chris into buying another for herself.)

Here's my inkle loom loaded into the car. We went straight back to my house where Chris helped me warp it up....
This is the first band I wove, about 1 inch wide. The selvages are a bit wonky but I am otherwise ...

Some New Knitting from Thread Head

I started a couple of new knitting projects last week.

The first one is another mystery gnome - Gnome is Where You Hang Your Hat by Sarah Schira. We have had 3 clues so far. I am using handspun from a local raw fleece.

This one is Twice as Nice by JumperCables.

I am using some handspun linen and silk along with some silk gima (ribbon) that I dyed with the fibre.

The fabric weaving is coming along nicely.

I think I am about half way done.

All the best!♥︎
