Ask Jo: Quilt Block and a Quilt from Jo's Country Junction

Every so often questions and comments come from readers that I think others would like to hear my response to.  That’s when I feature them on the blog.  This is one of those days. Today’s questions are about quilts. Question #1 comes from Gloria. She found this vintage quilt and is wondering if someone knew the name of …

It Moose be Love! from Words & Stitches

I love February! For a lover of hearts and pink and all things Valentine’s, it’s a beautiful month even if the weather doesn’t agree! Often in the Pacific Northwest, it’s also the time of year we get what I like to call “False Spring.” We get a few days of very pretty, hopeful weather that gets all the gardening people excited…then it settles down to rain for weeks. One of the other things I love is making baby quilts and there are a whole bunch of new babies on the way this spring. I found ...

Word of the Year Quilts from On Point Quilter

I did an EQ8 tutorial earlier this week -- in celebration of Valentine's Day.

The EQ tutorial shows how to draft a template that can be used to cut two pieces of fabric that could be woven together for a single basket.

In the video, I share three different template options from Electric Quilt 8. Cutting manually. Creating an SVG. Exporting an image and tracing in an Electronic cutting system.

I also share how I used these items with Cricut Design Space.

Then learn how to weave your fabric for your own 3D basket.

What I’m Reading: The Summer of Songbirds from Jo's Country Junction

I had put this book, The Summer of Songbirds by Kristy Woodson, on my Libby waitlist and finally, after a few months of waiting, it became available. After just reading a sad Holocaust book the previous week, I was ready for something light and not so serious. Here is what Amazon had to say:“Nearly thirty …

Texture from Quilting and More...

I’ve been taking a long time to get going on the quilting on my current small quilt. I did actually start, but then I didn’t like what I’d done, so I “unquilted” it and started over with the “pondering” phase. However, I’m coming down the home stretch now, and I have to say that I’m […]

Sizes for the Double Pinwheel Block from Home Sewn By Carolyn

I have had several people asking for the sizes of the Double Pinwheel Block.  In the quilt below, I used an 8" finished sized block.  This quilt pattern is from my favorite quilt book, Around the Block with Judy Hopkins.  I am also attaching the page of the Double Pinwheel Block from the book.  As you can see, it is much loved and used daily.
I hope this helps.  It's a great block to make.  Enjoy!  Carolyn

Project Quilting 15.3 from Words & Stitches

The challenge this week was “Inside Out”. The idea was to take an element that was normallyon the inside and feature it on the outside. Once again, I struggled but half the fun of the challenges is to push yourself creatively. I ended up deciding on two inside out elements. The first was selvages. My early sewing days were in garment construction were the inside of a garment often had selvages. I used to love when a straight edge had a selvage because it meant I didn’t have to finish the edge. (This was in a pre-serger time of ...

It has been 6 months since I started my Artist in Residence with the Durham Art Guild. With it coming to an end, I have a solo show with all new work March 15th – April 11th. My work for this residence explored more of my process but also looking at making pieces that may be more than just 2 dimensions.

For those that are local, I hope you can come to the Opening Reception March 15th and celebrate this journey with me. In the meantime, I’m sharing with you all the details around my show.
