What Are Quilters Blogging About Today?

This quilt should be named Forever! The quilt top was finished about three years ago. My brilliant idea was to hand quilt it with embroidery cotton doing a big stitch. I came across some orphan blocks the other day and decided to put them on the design wall.

The last row of blocks were not playing nicely with the rest. I also don’t think the outside blocks will work. There are more of them and I thought perhaps they could be used as side borders. And the blocks on the lower right with the large pieces? Well…I dove into another bin and there were more of those! Enough I think to make a wheelchair quilt for Hospice.

Many moons ago I stitched strips from a roll together, then cut them into triangles. For a reason not known to me now, I put them away in a bin.

Time to sew these together, but I needed a plan – or did I? I decided on a free-for-all, thus the name “Melee.” It’s not entirely unplanned. I did make a “spider web” as the center.

 Last year was a kind of blur. It started out normal but quickly changed into the year from hell. I hated being away from my family and my sewing/quilting peeps. Both of my guilds, Eastern Long Island Quilt Guild and Long Island Modern Quilt Guild, stopped in person meetings as of March. I've got the entire top cut out and all the pieces labeled for "Elephant Parade" by Sew Fresh Quilts. This one has been on my "to do" list for a very long time, it's for Lynnleigh. Guess what her favorite animal is. I'm adding more baby elephants and omitting the flowers, bird, turtle and frog. Her current favorite colors are coral and teal, that's how it will be bordered. I'm off this weekend to

After getting the Star Flower quilt all quilted and the binding attached, I needed a bit more color saturation to brighten the day. I dug deep into my bin of 4.5" square scraps and after a quick pass through the die cutter I set to work on this scrappy hexagon quilt. It's vibrant and fun. I have half of it pieced as it's shown here on the design wall. It will measure 56" X 72" at completion,

January turned into one of those months when a whole lot of nothing got done. Best to put it behind me and move on.

Last month I talked about limiting active sewing projects to two, avoiding overwhelm. That didn’t happen either. Projects are everywhere. Again. I have a variety of projects to enjoy, depending on my mood.

I usually post a somewhat abbreviated list of quilts I hope to complete in the coming year in January- it helps me focus on my goals. Never mind that those goals are subject to change on a whim - but there are no rules in quilting and in my book, inspiration ought to be spontaneous. However, this year I am expanding that list purely because I will use this post to refer back to in the coming

New year, new projects, new approach.

I had a productive December with both a UFO and a garment finish. That means new additions to the list.

In 2021 I will keep the list shorter. In looking at finishes in comparison to 2020 goals, it was clear my goals were too ambitious. That pushed me to get a lot of projects done, but I don’t want to feel overwhelmed.
