Triangles everywhere, all at once from Ellyn's Place

I just realized I left you hanging. I never shared my completed Improv Triangle Sewalong quilt.... although I did share some of my process here. Well it's finished! Introducing, Triangles everywhere, all at once...

The improv triangle units were made using the process Nicholas Ball spells out in his book, Inspiring Improv. I used fabric I had painted with my gel plate and acrylic paints for the triangles and assorted teal, aqua and orange solids from my stash.

When it came time to quilt, I went a little bananas! It is all walking foot quilted on my domestic machine ...

6 more blocks plus test block................ from Exuberant Color

Yesterday afternoon I decided to cut a test block with my Schoolhouse die.  This was a test for the one way design (beige print) to check how it would look with one piece turned the other direction.  Also I'm checking if I like 2 colors or might like 3 or 4 colors better, sky one color, windows another color and light pieces in the building another color.  Maybe even a different color roof and/or chimneys.  It will take a lot of planning to cut the pieces of fabric to place on the die.

Last night I made the ...

More flowers.......... from Exuberant Color

My grandson wanted to know if he could stop by and bring me lunch yesterday and of course I said yes.  He brought me this beautiful little basket arrangement.  There is a yellow rose in the middle that barely shows from this view.  Now I have a bouquet in the kitchen and another in the living room.  I am so spoiled and I love it.

My grandson mentioned one of his best friends and wife just had their first baby, a little girl, so I let him choose a quilt to give to them.  This one is all flannel, nice ...

Starting to make blocks............. from Exuberant Color

There are 2 kinds of half rectangle blocks, facing left and facing right.  I sorted them into 2 piles to make my choices faster.

I decided to make 4 patch blocks and then decide their arrangement on the design wall.  Since all of the colors are repeated often it will be a challenge to not get 2 alike next to each other.

There are 12 blocks sewn so far, 36 more to make.  I thought maybe I should make 2 baby quilts from the blocks instead of a 48" x 72" throw quilt but I'm liking it better than ...

More half rectangle blocks........... from Exuberant Color

Yesterday morning I was straightening up one area in the basement and noticed this pink and blue batik with little animals on it.  Since I have designated the pink twisted ribbon top as a baby quilt I decided this will be the backing fabric.

I mowed the grass in the early afternoon and then last night sewed some more half rectangle blocks.

(Anonymous: Yes I am die cutting the half rectangles)

There are 134 blocks in these piles and I have pressed 40.  I need 66 more so there will be some more sewing tonight and probably Friday night too ...

A little yellow added................ from Exuberant Color

There are 4 pale yellows added to the mix now, left and middle on the top row and middle and right on the bottom row.  I did some pairing and counting last night.

Here is the batch I sewed last night.  Maybe one more night of sewing and then I can start playing with the layout.

Yesterday morning early I did some grocery shopping and then I became the repair person.  This handle on the freezer compartment of my refrigerator has come off 5 or 6 times in the last 18 years.  The first time the guy who sold it ...

Pastels.....low volume......... from Exuberant Color

I'm still sewing half rectangle blocks.  I wonder if I need to add yellow.  If so it needs to be a soft yellow like this print.  I haven't made a decision on that yet.

This is how many I have sewn so far.  I haven't pressed them with an iron yet, just fingernail pressing as I go.  I took all of the blocks off the wall and will press this batch today.  I have more to sew and I won't put any back up on the wall until I have all of the combinations sewn.

This ...

Little blooms............. from Exuberant Color

The tiny Jonquils are blooming now.  I didn't see any buds until a few days ago and I thought maybe the nights with freeze warnings had stunned them.  There are about a dozen in bloom and more buds that will probably open today.

I dug some more Hostas and potted 8 more.  A couple are really small so I'll probably leave them in pots until next year.  It's surprising how many varieties haven't broken ground yet.  The latest to come up is also the latest to flower, all the way to the first of September.

The ...

Mindless sewing.................. from Exuberant Color

Yesterday afternoon I cut the large triangles for the Flying Geese blocks to match up with the leftover light triangles of Australian fabrics.  There are 50 here with another 30 or so left to assemble.  No plan for them right now, just mindless sewing because I was too tired to do anything else.

I forgot to take a photo of the other Lenten Rose until 7 p.m. yesterday.  I would call it green but maybe this is really considered a white flower.  Whatever color it is, it is pretty.

Yesterday morning I raked leaves onto the backyard grass and ...

More Australian fabric fun............. from Exuberant Color

First up, I sewed the zig zag quilt top, pressed it and did the staystitching around the perimeter.  It is 36" x 45".

Then I moved something and discovered a tray with more triangles.  I remember I had put it aside because I needed more dark ones.  Oh, well, there will be another quilt top because the one pictured above is done unless I decide to add the borders.

Next up was using the remainder of the strip sets I used for the border on the Australian churn dash quilt.  There was 29" left so I could get four 7 ...

One top finished, another started.............. from Exuberant Color

The last 2 seams were sewn on this colorwash, the iron turned on for a final press and staystitching done around the perimeter.  It is 32" x 51".

I finished sewing all of the Australian fabric triangles into squares and during TV time I did this layout.  This one is going to be small.  When sewn together this will be about 36" x 45".  I have the leftover long strips left from the border fabric on the 16 patch quilt so I'll audition it and see if I want to add borders or just keep it small.

Half-Square Triangle Tips from Patchwork Sampler Blog

Tomorrow, the second block in The Celebrate Quilt chunk of the month will be released. This quilt requires a lot of half-square triangles. You may already have a favorite construction method. If so, go ahead and use it to make your triangles. I give the finished size required for all of them. Just make sure that’s the size you end up with. If you don’t have a favorite method, continue reading for a few triangle tips and tricks.

If you have been here any time at all, you know that I am always looking for the easiest and ...

Rest and recharge.............. from Exuberant Color

Yesterday was a lazy day, time to recharge.  It was 31 yesterday morning and 55 in the afternoon.  Maybe the temperature swing is why I had no ambition to work on anything.  Last night I took one of each of the triangle squares I sewed the night before and tried my favorite layout, zig zag.  I think they look pretty good and this design would make me happy.  Now I need to sew up the rest of the triangles that are already cut and then cut up some scraps for more variety.

Sewing pieces and parts..................... from Exuberant Color

When I cut the triangles for the Hole in the Barn Door/Churn Dash quilt I cut extras.  I sewed 98 of the squares last night.  I'll be playing with them on the design wall soon.

There were also some strips left that I didn't need for the border on that quilt so I sewed the last 5 strip sets.

I don' t know where I will go with these parts, it was just mindless sewing while I caught up with 3 TV shows I missed last week.

There were 12 tornados in IL Friday night but none ...

All 20 blocks and final layout............... from Exuberant Color

Way too many rectangles were cut to finish the 20 Bear Paw blocks.  More seeds for another quilt.  I'm pretty sure this is the final layout of the blocks. There will still be 1" finished sashing strips added so I won't have to match all of the points when sewing the top together.

I remembered that I had a bag of 22" long 1.5" batik strips leftover from making a log cabin baby quilt top in 2009.  I had just used half of every full width strip for that quilt.  It is here in this monthly recap ...

A few more blocks.............. from Exuberant Color

Three more blocks were totally sewn, the one at the top left needs its rectangles.  I chose enough fabrics for the rest of the rectangles but only got pieces cut from 3 of them.  I also paired all of the parts for the rest of the blocks so once I cut  more rectangles I should be able to finish all of the of the blocks.  While I'm cutting the rectangles I might as well cut strips for the sashing (cut 1.5" wide) since it will be scrappy too.

Sewing and baking...again........ from Exuberant Color

I cut some more of the larger squares for the Bear Paw blocks.  I'm not sure how many of them I will use.  I thought I needed a little lighter and brighter additions.

Here is the 7th fabric I cut into large squares.  I got all of the triangles for 20 blocks sewn together in pairs and sewed the 4 Paw units for this block.  I still need to cut more of the rectangle pieces.  I don't think I will be using that blue piece.

The storm missed us yesterday but we had the most fantastic sunset.   It ...

Baking and sewing............. from Exuberant Color

Some visitors are coming to my area for a few days so I had to shop for a few ingredients and then spent 5+ hours in the kitchen.

I started out with peanut butter cookies.

Next was the first batch of Chex mix.  I made another batch at the end of the kitchen session so I could use up all of the ingredients.

After the first batch of Chex Mix I baked Kringlas.  The dough had to be refrigerated for a couple hours so they were mixed earlier in the day.

In the evening I had 2 TV shows to ...

Working on two............ from Exuberant Color

I finished the two partial blocks from a couple days ago and then made 3 more blocks.  This is the amount of blocks I had in the first scrap Bear Paw quilt but I'm planning on either 20 or 24 for this quilt.

I like to make quilt blocks. Each one has its own decisions and becomes a mini quilt on its own.  Would you believe I still haven't sewn the last batch of Bear Paw blocks from October 2021 together into a top yet?  The fun is over when the blocks are made and final layout is ...

Counting, sorting, cutting............and baking.......... from Exuberant Color

The first thing I did yesterday was to count the pieces for one of the Australian fabric quilts and make sure I had even amounts of dark and light pieces.  Also I needed to know if I had the same number of triangles as long rectangles.  I have enough for 23 blocks and I'll need 24 so eventually I'll look for another fabric to finish up.

I put all of the pieces in a project box with the 9 big prints for centers.  I need to cut 14 more of them.

I went ahead and sewed the first ...
