Week 24 of 2024 from Thread Head

This week I made another tiny pincushion from a circle of fabric, a button, some thread, crushed walnut shells, and an old Christmas light reflector.

Week 21 of 2024 from Thread Head

A couple knitting finishes this week -

A pair of handspun socks. They are my regular sock pattern with a simple 3x1 cable rib added for interest.

A handspun hat knit as part of a weekend knit along challenge. The pattern is The Traveller Hat by Andrea Mowry, and the knit along challenge was in Andrea Mowry's Ravelry group, to knit the hat between May 24th to 27th 2024.

More knitting on the temperature blanket too.

I also finished spinning the Wensleydale/Romney fibre. The yarn is quite fine, but scratchy, and I think would work well for weaving.

Week 20 of 2024 from Thread Head

Still lots of works in progress -

I have been spinning some locks from a local shepherd. They are a Wensleydale/Romney cross. I am flick carding the individual locks to open them up before spinning - something new for me.

The latest handspun socks are long enough to start the ribbing.

A few more medallions added to the piece of tatting.

A good selection of temperatures this week for the blanket.

A few projects on the go-

Started a new weaving project - a simple, plain weave, project to stay on the loom for the summer time (more tea towels).

I picked this tatting project up again (started in 2021), another simple project for the summer.

There was a hot 27ºC day yesterday for the temperature blanket.

Finished a few things this week -

A skein of Merino/Nylon for sock, from fibre that I dyed last week.

And a set of six tea towels. The pattern is Four Blocks on Four Shafts: Summer & Winter Towels from Handwoven magazine, issue May/June 2013, woven in 2/8 cotton, cotton chenille and cotton bouclé.

Still working on some other projects too, including -

Socks with some more handspun Merino/Nylon.

And the temperature blanket - temperatures all over the place and a birthday this week.

Week 17 of 2024 from Thread Head

This week I finished spinning another skein of sock yarn (that will be my theme for the year).

The fibre was dyed neon pink and gold

I dyed some more fibre for socks. I was inspired by an article in the Summer 2018 issue of Spin Off magazine - Brewing Up a Batch of Custom Dyed Fiber by Anne Merrow. Basically to have small dots of colour in the white fibre.

For spinning I divided the fibre in to very thin pieces, to have short sections of colour. I am looking forward to seeing how this knits up.

Week 15 of 2024 from Thread Head

Mainly knitting this week, but I did press and trim more of the blocks that at sew at a monthly makers get together -

Now there are 54 Broken Dishes blocks (I need 218 total now because I decided to make a smaller quilt).

I finished spinning the fibre batt that I made from a local wool and our dog's fur.

79g of worsted weight tweed Chiengora yarn.

And knit a hat with it - a very quick knit. This one is for my son - Molly is his dog.

I am amazed how soft the yarn turned out, and the hat ...

Week 14 of 2024 from Thread Head

I worked on a few different projects this week -

I finished spinning a skein of sock yarn from some Merino/nylon that I had dyed recently.

An online spinning group that I belong to is having a challenge this month to spin a tweed yarn. I decided to drum card a bunch of salvaged fibre. This is all fluff that was (some maybe should have been) destined for the compost. Fur from Molly (collected over the years from brushing her after baths), wool from a local farmer (from meat sheep), scraps of handspun, and a tiny bit of winter white ...

Week 13 of 2024 from Thread Head

I finished sewing the quilted jacket!

This was made using a heavily modified Lutterloh pattern (#77 from supplement #320 - a vintage pattern that I made a French Terry jacket with a while ago). I removed the collar from the pattern.

Increased the centre fronts so I would have room for buttons and buttons holes.

Also made the sleeves longer and narrower. To finish the seams on the jacket I used an overlocker/serger, but I covered the seams for about 6" on the sleeves, so that they would look nice when folded back.

This past week I started a quilted jacket -

This was a medallion quilt top that I made over 6 years ago. I wasn't really happy with it and I knew that it probably needed more, but I didn't think I would like it any better. I would pull it out occasionally to try to think what to do with it, then put it away. It was the only quilt top that I have made that didn't get quilted as soon as it was finished. Week 9 of 2024 from Thread Head

Not much crafting this week, it was more about cooking and baking (my quest to be more self sufficient means there is more food preparation which I enjoy too).

The only thing I finished was a little pincushion for my sister out of an old Christmas light reflector from our sister-in-law (I think they might have come from one of her grandparents). I have made a few pincushions like this and find them a great size. It is stuffed with crushed walnut shells (lizard litter), with a little piece of textured rubber on the bottom so it stays in place ...

This week I sewed a little jacket out of leftover French Terry from a project I had made years ago.

The pattern is from Lutterloh - a vintage reproduction #77 from supplement 320 Spring 2021. I modified it by making it out of a knit (when sewing a Lutterloh pattern designed for woven out of a knit we are told to go down a few sizes - I could have made mine smaller), I added length to the body and the sleeves, made the collar a bit smaller, the sleeves a bit narrower towards the wrists, placed the back on the fold ...

Week 6 of 2024 from Thread Head

This week I finished up a quilt -

This was a stash buster quilt that I cut almost a year ago, and was my grab-and-go project to sew at quilt group. Made from batik fabric, it is 90" square. The fabric was all cut with the GO! cutter using two sizes of drunkard's path dies, along with some 4" square. There was no planning to the piecing and I am really happy with how it turned out.

Week 4 of 2024 from Thread Head

This past week I sewed another black skirt. This one a winter one in a thick knit (I think a ponte or a scuba - another one that was $1 a pound). It is from a Lutterloh dress pattern that I modified to make a skirt.

I put another set of tea towels on the loom. A huck lace pattern in 2/8 cotton, woven with two shuttles.

Temperatures are warming up (around freezing) for the temperature blanket. There will be some more new colours this next week with even warmer temperatures in the forecast.

Week 3 of 2024 from Thread Head

This past week I cut 1600, 3+1/2" squares of fabric (each stack is 100 squares).

To make a queen sized, scrappy, Broken Dishes quilt.

This will be my new grab-and-go project, that fits in a tin (my favourite kind of quilt to sew).

There is enough squares to make 400, 5" blocks. The finished quilt will be 100" square with a 20x20 block layout.

I am almost finished my other grab-and-go project, a Drunkard's Path quilt that I cut out last year, so it was time to get a new one ready.
