Joyce Wieland and Art with Fabric from Quilting & Learning

Reason & Passion - based on
Joyce Wieland's Reason Over Passion (1968)
Welcome to Art with Fabric - Spring 2017! I'm thrilled to be participating in this blog hop again - thanks Alida for organizing it! It's so much fun finding an artist's work to use as inspiration. I had to find one that I liked since I spent about 4 months thinking and working on this piece.

The piece I've chosen to interpret is Joyce Wieland's Reason over Passion, created in 1968. Joyce Wieland (1930 - 1998) was an amazing woman. I was introduced to her art by ...

Adventurous Applique from Quilting Affection

I just finished my Island Batik project for April just in time.  This month's theme was "Adventurous Applique".  I started this project earlier this month and I finished quilting and binding this project this week.

In February, I picked up a new ruler set, with project book, for the Bloomin' Cogwheel Rulers. So I wanted to try something different this month to make a couple plates with the new rulers.  I had no real plan, just started looking at some of the plate designs in the book.  I knew I wanted to make something that was small, maybe something ...

Five Years - 150 Posts from Quilting & Learning

Five years ago in March 2012, I wrote my first blog post. Who would have thought that I would keep going with another 149 posts, or that I would love it? I still remember how great it felt that first time, to see my words and my creation on the web.

My very first blog post - March 2012
I'm also extremely lucky that I've been able to take web writing and design courses through work. It's great to be able to do some of what I love at work. Part of my job is to teach employees ...

Island Batik Ambassadors 2017 from Quilting Affection

I'm very excited to tell you that I will be returning for my 2nd year as an Island Batik Ambassador.  This year over 35 Ambassadors were selected, that is very exciting. For the last week, we have been having fun introducing ourselves and waiting in pure excitement for our first boxes.

On Thursday afternoon, my first shipment of Island Batik fabrics arrived by FedEx. I was so excited and so were the girls.
Mom, the box is now safe to open!
Of course, the girls could not help me open the box, but they had to check it out ...

Happy Mail! from Pamela Quilts

There is no better happy mail than getting an Ambassador box from Island Batik!  Every time I have opened one of these shipments I think that it is the best box ever, and I think they just keep getting better and better.  Here is my live video of my box opening:

I was pretty nervous about doing it - like most people I think my recorded voice sounds really weird and annoying, but I have decided to just get over myself and try to branch out a bit!  It was really fun, and I think I'll try to do more ...

First Block - Applique from Quilting & Learning

Growing up QAL button
I know that I shouldn't commit to another quilting activity...but since I love learning and participating in Alida's events, I signed up for Growing up QAL, a skill building quilt-along.

Alida is giving us an excellent incentive to actually make the blocks since to keep receiving the instructions for the QAL for free, we have to make and post the blocks within a specific time period (which is generous).

The first block for January is the Rose Appliqué Block.

Crafted Appliqué

Of course, I didn't quite follow the instructions. I copied the pattern onto freezer paper ...

Art with Fabric Blog Hop Coming from Quilting & Learning

Art with Fabric blog hop
Have you ever had an amazing idea for a project that scares the hell out of you? I know that this is a good thing, because it means that I’m stretching myself as an artist, but it’s still painful to go through.

To minimize the anxiety (and justify the procrastination), I’ve done a few things:
  • I did my homework so that I’m comfortable with the subject matter;
  • I’ve drawn several drafts with various amounts of detail;
  • I’ve gone through my fabric and purchased lots more;
  • I’ve written out ...

Happy Hour from Terificreations's Weblog

But before I get to the happy hour bit. I did a bit of a tidy up in my sewing room yesterday. Oh my goodness was I ever over due for that! A while back someone gave me thread stands for both Superior and Aurifil. These very useful stands were sitting in the middle of […]

Dream Big from Renee Valdes

This year my chosen word is "Focus" and so I am going to use that as my reason for being so quiet this first quarter...lol...  yeah that is my story and I am sticking to it... :-)

No seriously, I have been very focused the first 3 months of the year creating art.  My first series for the year is called "Dream Big".  It was inspired by the anniversary of man's first walk on the moon and Misty Copeland being named the first female African American Principal Ballerina for the American Ballet Theatre.  The main feature of the series ...
