Backs and Borders Part II from Life In Pieces

The weekend was a bit of a mixed bag.  We got to see the Scientist in Training on Friday, but then My Guy got to feeling bad on Saturday.  So we spend a quiet day at home on Sunday. He's still not feeling great and has a fever. With the current guidelines at work, he has to see the doctor and I have to work from home till he's cleared.

It was a pretty good weekend in the sewing room.  I finished my August One Monthly Goal.

Storm at Sea was cleaned up, boxed up and shipped out ...

To Do Tuesday for the Week of 8/25/2020 from Life In Pieces

I'm not sure what happened to the last week.  It's already Tuesday again and time for a new to do list.  Except there isn't much new on this week's list as I didn't finish much from last week's list.

  • Storm at Sea: Finish prepping quilt top for quilting
  • Christmas Mystery: Make backing - progress
  • Daisy Chain: Decide on borders
  • Unity: Finish Step 3, make HSTs for step 4 - progress
I did finish getting Storm at Sea cleaned up and pressed.  That pretty much dominated last week's sewing time.  Which is why there aren't ...

Random Stitchy Stuff from Life In Pieces

The weather has been beautiful.  Typically we've had a couple of weeks of scorching hot days by this time.   But that didn't happen this year. It's also been a lot wetter than normal, everything is still green. Normally the fields and yards are mostly brown by this point in the summer.  There is a downside to all this lovely weather, the allergens are a lot higher than normal. So my sinuses haven't been happy.  Thankfully I'm not miserable, I'm just not operating at 100%.

In spite of the the allergy issues, I did get ...

To Do Tuesday for Week of 8/18/2020 from Life In Pieces

Hard to believe that August is more than half over.  I'm not sure where the last week went.  I did get in quite a bit of stitching time, though I didn't finish last week's To Do List.

Weekly To Do List (8/11/2020)

  • Storm at Sea: Prep top for quilting - progress
  • Frolic:  Finish borders
  • Unity: Finish step 3, start step 4 - progress

Only one to do checked off the list for the last week.  That's a pretty big check mark as it means another quilt top is finished. There was good progress on the other ...

To Do Tuesday for the Week of 8/11/2020 from Life In Pieces

We took a couple of staycation days last week. It was nice to hang with the Scientist in Training before she headed back to college, but it was also nice to get some dedicated time in the sewing room. That helped make pretty quick work of last week's To Do List.

Weekly To Do List for 08/04/2020
  • Storm at Sea: Press, trim, prep for quilting
  • Frolic: Assemble flying geese borders
  • Unity: Step 3, finish sawtooth stars

I kept last week's list pretty short in hopes it would help me focus on getting that backing for Storm ...

Status of My One Word Challenge for 2020: Finish from Life In Pieces

After almost 20 years of cutting up perfectly good fabric into little pieces and sewing them back together into quilts, I still love doing it. At the end of last year though, my UFO list was eating at me.  I love every quilt on that list, there's not any I don't want to finish. But I am struggling to get quilts off the list.  So for 2020, I decided to give the one word challenge a try. The word you pick is supposed to remind you of what you want to achieve during the year so as you ...

To Do Tuesday for Week of 8/4/2020 from Life In Pieces

August got off to a mild start, it was cool enough yesterday to eat our lunch in the park. That's a nice break from eating in my office.  Though that may be on the agenda today as both of our calendars are packed with meetings.  My office to do list won't see much action, but thankfully the sewing to do list is in good shape.

Weekly To Do List (07/28/2020)
Storm at Sea: Trim backing, prep for quilting - no progress
Frolic: Finish flying geese for borders
Christmas Mystery: Add borders
Unity: Make more Sawtooth Stars

Check ...

To Do Tuesday (07/28/20) from Life In Pieces

It's been challenging getting back into some type of schedule since our stay at home days.  I'm slowly getting back on track with my stitching time in the evenings and making progress on getting into some type of fitness program. The weekly To Do List linky party over at Home Sewn By Us is helping me stay focused on my stitchy goals. Maybe a Weekly Fitness To Do would help on the fitness front or a 15 Minutes to Sweat weekly linky?  Hmm, maybe not. For now, I'll just stick with reviewing last week's stitchy To ...

To Do Tuesday for the Week of 7/21/2020 from Life In Pieces

It's been warm, but thankfully the humidity isn't as bad as it was.  Still you really don't want to be outside much unless it's early or the sun has gone down.  You'd think getting in more stitching time would be easier, but the heat just seems to sap the energy right out of me.  Of course it would help if we'd get home a bit earlier. We both were playing catch up at work this last week after our staycation the week before.  In spite of the lack of energy and time, there was ...

To Do Tuesday for the Week of 07/14/2020 from Life In Pieces

Last week seemed to speed by, our staycation went by in a blur.  The first day back at work was long and hectic.  I was ready to spend some time playing with fabric last night and deciding on what should go on this week's to do list. More on that in a few lines, fist I'd like to celebrate the progress on last week's to do list.

To Do List for the week of 07/07/2020
Mosaic Mystery:  Finish quilt
Frolic:  Finish lt. blue border, stitch HSTs
Unity: Step 3, make more Sawtooth Stars
Storm at ...

To Do Tuesday for the Week of 7/7/2020 from Life In Pieces

I've been enjoying a staycation with My Guy.  I did have to work a bit yesterday and will need to put in a couple of hours today, but that should be it for the week. Though I will need to check email here and there.  We were off visiting the Scientist in Training over the weekend, but I did get in a really good afternoon of stitching time yesterday. Good enough finish checking off all the items on last week's To Do List.

Weekly To Do List for 06/30/2020
Frolic:  Trim, start on light blue border ...

The Midyear Review for 2020 Quilting Ambitions from Life In Pieces

I finished the last of my midyear reviews with my direct reports at work yesterday.   The purpose of the midyear review is to make sure you are on track with your goals. If you are not on track, it helps to identify the obstacles or changes in priorities and adjust accordingly. Also it's a good opportunity to celebrate your successes. It's just natural for me to apply what we do at work to the quilty part of my life.  Back in December I set my 2020 Quilting Ambitions as part of Quilting Jetgirl's 2020 Planning Party.  Here ...

To Do Tuesday for 6/23/2020 from Life In Pieces

A check of the calendar shows that this week's to do list will take me to the end of June. The year's just about half over, so I definitely need to get moving if I'm going to make some of my 2020 goals. Checking off a few more things from my to do lists would definitely be a move in the right direction.  Unfortunately, last week's to do list is a bit anemic when it comes to check marks.

Weekly To Do list (06/16/2020)
Frolic: Finish sashing, assemble - progress
Unity: Step 3, make some ...

Mid-Month PHD Progress from Life In Pieces

It's mid-month, so time to stop and reflect on the overall progress in the sewing room for the month.  I'm following along with Quilting Gail's PHD program for 2020.

I'm not doing so well if you look at my stats for the year so far.

Only two finishes, but thankfully only one new start.  So I've at least reduced the overall project total by one. Though it doesn't show up on the stat list, there has been some really good progress this year in addition to the two finishes.

Mosaic Mystery is back from ...

To Do Tuesday for 6/16/2020 from Life In Pieces

Last week wasn't a good one for stitching.  I'm trying to do better this week.  In spite of the sparse stitching time, there was some progress on last week's To Do List.

Weekly To Do List for 06/09/2020

Frolic: Finish last block, sashing pieces, assemble - progress
Unity: Step 3, finish one pieced border strip - progress
Storm at Sea:  Finish white border, start blue border

Just one check mark for last week, but there was progress on the other two items.  So not a stellar week, but it wasn't a complete bust either.  What's ...

To Do Tuesday for 6/9/2020 from Life In Pieces

One week of June is in the bag, three weeks left till we hit midyear.  I'm preparing for mid year reviews at work, which always prompts me to take a look at where I'm at midyear on my stitching goals.  I'll do that at the end of the month, so I've got a few more weeks to work on my big goal for the year.

So that will be the focus of my Tuesday To Do lists for June.  How did the first week go?

Weekly To Do List for 06/02/2020

Frolic:  Assemble dark ...

Borders, Blocks and Other Stuff from Life In Pieces

The Scientist in Training headed back to campus to start her summer research program yesterday afternoon. The house seemed pretty empty after she left.  She'll be back for Father's Day, which really isn't that far off.  But it's going to take me a bit to get used to her not being here.

The weather has gone from cool and rainy to hot and humid over the last week.  I'm guessing the mold levels are pretty high, as my sinuses haven't been very happy this week.  It wasn't the most productive week ever in ...

June One Monthly Goal from Life In Pieces

We are off work today.  The Scientist in Training heads back to college on Sunday.  Classes are all on line, but she has undergraduate research to do this summer, so she needs to head back to campus.  Only the graduate students will be around, so a much reduced presence on campus.  Her undergraduate advisor has already put in place some pretty stringent social distancing and lab cleaning procedures for the research group.

I'm hoping to get in some time in the sewing room. Not to sew, but to clean up a bit.  It's necessary if I'm going ...

Half a PHD Maybe? from Life In Pieces

It's a new month, one the end of which will mark the half way point in 2020.  Let's not jump there just yet.  It's probably much less depressing to back up a bit and review how well my PHD program is going.

If you look at my PHD tracking, it doesn't look so hot.

Only two finishes so far. On the other hand, just one new start. So I'm not adding to the UFO list and there was some really good progress in May.

Mosaic Mystery is being quilted by the very talented Trudy.

To Do List for 6/2/2020 from Life In Pieces

It's June. Already?  I'm definitely not ready for it to be mid year.  Rather than think about how much there is to do to meet my 2020 goals, I'm going to just focus on what might get done during the next week.  Before that, I should celebrate what gone done last week.

Weekly To Do List for 05/26/2020
Frolic: Assemble dark blue row, lt. blue block - Progress
Unity:  Finish step 2, start step 3
Storm at Sea:  Add next white border - Progress

It was a good week with one big to do checked off and ...
