Done and DONE!! from Crazy Quilter on a Bike!

OK --- so the lawn furniture got put away. Phew -- we can all rest easy now. It wasn't so much the furniture; it was shutting off the tap to the backyard that was the critical thing here. I noticed that DH put one piece in the shed, but it was the largest piece, making it a challenge to get the rest in there. But I managed. And I drained 200 feet of garden hose, and it's all stored away. The deck is mostly swept -- I would have used the leaf blower, but it was at the back of the ...

New Additions from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

It seems like it has been forever since I bought any new fabric.

This last weekend, I taught a class at Aloha Sewing and Vac in Hillsboro Or.  I think it is the first time I have been in a fabric store since the start of Covid.

So all those pretty bolts of fabric were impossible to resist.

Here are the pretties I bought.  Most are 3 yard cuts or larger.  The sketch fabric on the bottom is probably my favorite.  I can't wait to use that as a a background for a quilt.

While I was there, I ...

Fall Favorite from Heart Desire Creations

One of the challenges when I was an Island Batik ambassador in 2017 was “Creative Borders.” I chose to do a fall pumpkin themed table topper of my own design. It was one of those creations that just took shape as I went – no plan, no pattern. It has turned into one of my favorites and ever since has been on my dining room table in October until Thanksgiving!

Here are the center of the quilt and one of the appliqued corners:

Much time is now being spent with fall yard work. The leaf falling is in the early stages ...

On The Design Wall from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Now that I have caught up on many of my projects, I am able to get out a stash quilt I started earlier this year.

I went through all of my Kaffe Fassett stash and scraps and cut up enough big hexagons for the size quilt I wanted.  I used the Hex N More Ruler by Jaybird Designs. I also started cutting a few of the solid triangles I need.  Then life got in the way and these pretties were set aside.

I had an empty design wall (behind my longarm) so I put them all up so I can ...

Finding more fabrics................. from Exuberant Color

I went through the box of larger Kaffe collective scraps and found a few more pieces to use in the current quilt in progress.

I couldn't get right in front of the design wall to take this photo so it looks like it is crooked on the design wall but it isn't.  My log cabin blocks are still on the wall so I only have a small area to put these in.  There are 4 more blocks added since yesterday's post and then I had to make more large pieced blocks before I could continue.  Four more ...

Black and Gold from Heart Desire Creations

Recently, while digging through a fabric bin of precuts, I came across a bundle of black and gold fabrics together with coordinating fabrics. I slashed the squares into triangles and began sewing them into half square triangles. No real plan – just wanted to sew. Sometimes this method works for me, sometimes it doesn’t, but luckily it did this time!

As I put them on the design wall, the plan changed several times. A central block soon became key. Finally I had the look I wanted and sewed it all together. I even quilted this one myself!

The center block ...

Getting rows together from Quilt in Progress

This is more exciting than just sewing 80 blocks and trimming them to size. I had 3 rows sewn together and couldn’t wait to start connecting the rows.

Some progress on connecting rows

I’ll try to explain the process. I didn’t make this up; I found instructions on several blogs. This is not the only way to connect the QAYG blocks, but it’s the way I chose.

First, I sewed the binding strip to the one side of one block, right sides together.

pinned binding

I stitched along the fold line. Next, I flipped the next ...

Some great mail............ from Exuberant Color

About a week ago I got an email from Fabricworm that there was a sale on some of the Charley Harper fabric.  I decided I should check it out and see if there were any that I didn't have that I might want in the Arboretum quilt.  I found a few..........

I found some nice ones with background colors that will work really well.  The bottom right is bears behind birches.  I wasn't sure about that one but bears do climb trees and I thought the birches might be a nice addition.

Two of my good friends came ...

Current Arboretum layout.............. from Exuberant Color

This is definitely not anywhere near the final layout.  I have more thinking to do.  As a recap, the top 2 sections of 2 rows are sewn together and are overlapped so I could get more rows on the design wall.  There are too many dark blocks in the bottom 2 rows so I need to keep playing.  I like the 2 rows below the 2 sewn sections well enough to sew them but that would mean eliminating most of the really dark blocks.  Maybe that is what I need to do anyway.  They could always be a strip in ...

Sunday only project................ from Exuberant Color

I had a few light triangles left from last week and cut a few more new ones so I could continue with this project.

I also went through the box of remaining triangles cut from scraps last year and tried to find 5 that were similar enough to work together for a strip.

I ended up with 18 strips sewn, 2 more partially sewn and 7 more sets ready to sew.  I'll finish the 2 partially sewn strips for a total of 20 to add to the project box, now up to 112 sewn.

Here again is some sewn ...

Fabric, and more fabric................ from Exuberant Color

Here are some more Kaffe collective fabrics that I got.  The big paisley on the left has a black background.  The light from the window makes it look a little lighter than it is.

I collected more greens for my Arboretum blocks and maybe the green one in this photo should be used too.

I have had this selection of fabrics laying on a chair in my studio for several months.  It was "clean off the chairs" day yesterday so I will move the group to a project box.

My tomato plants continue to produce.  These are the smallest ones ...

Playday........ from Exuberant Color

It was raining off and on most of the day yesterday.  My rain gauge had 2.15" in it for a 24 hour total.

That made it a playday for me.  Of course I could have cleaned the house......

The first thing I did was sew 10 more scrappy log cabin blocks.  They will finish at 7" and I now have 40 made.  I think I will need close to 80 for a throw quilt.

I still had a small pile of backgrounds cut for the original size Arboretum blocks so I did some prepping for future sewing.

Two more ...

Portable project from Quilt in Progress

I said this was a great method for putting in just a few minutes here and there. It is also fantastic for being portable.

I live in Missouri but I’m originally from Michigan. I needed to go back for a visit and didn’t want to lose 7 or 8 sewing days, so I brought it along. I managed to fit everything into two smallish boxes, plus the small portable sewing machine.

I could have brought it into the motel room where I stayed overnight on the way there and on the way back. I decided I was too ...

All over the place............... from Exuberant Color

I have too many days where I wander all over and do a little on a lot of things.  It doesn't feel like progress somehow.

I chose a batik backing for this crazy pieced wallhanging.  I needed a little under 1.5 yards and looked for a yellow but didn't find enough yardage on any piece.  Second choice was a black and white and this very early 1990s Hoffman batik is perfect.  It is one that isn't easy to use in a lot of patterns and there was plenty for a back with almost 2 yards still ...

#2 finish for August........... from Exuberant Color

Winged Square a/k/a Cut Glass Dish block.  I made 2 quilt tops with this block so I could call one Winged Square and the other one Cut Glass Dish.  This one is 47" x 58.5".

It is quilted with a medium size meander, gray YLI cotton thread on top, Bottom Line light beige thread in the bobbin.  Batting is Hobbs 80/20.

The backing is an early Brandon Mably (#05) fabric called Dapple with an added strip of Dahlia by Kaffe Fassett to make it wide enough for the top.   Binding is Fern (Kaffe) in purple with ...

A “Little” to Gift from Heart Desire Creations

Recently, a Tula Pink fan and friend who I had the privilege to meet with last year, and have corresponded with on the internet for the past couple of years, put out the word that she now had a separate building as her quilting/creating studio and wanted to do a wall of mini Tula Pink quilts. (She offered payment, but gifting was the way to go) My Tula Pink stash is quite depleted. I have made several quilts from her fabrics and sold or gifted most of the remainder. I did, however, still have a partial cameo of a ...

Square in a Square – Comfort Quilt from Heart Desire Creations

A tutorial for a different way to do a square in a square block popped up while browsing Pinterest one day and I thought I’d give it a try. Place two squares of equal size on top of each other, right sides together. Then sew all four edges using a 1/4″ seam. Mark from corner to opposite corner then the next corner to corner. Carefully cut the “x” being sure to not cut into the seam. Fold out each cut section, press, and voila! there’s your block! It’s not a true square in a square as ...

Melting in the heat.............. from Exuberant Color

The heat is getting to me.  Yes, I have 2 window A/C units and many fans but.....

I managed to get 2 more blocks sewn for the Arboretum quilt but couldn't bear the thought of turning on the iron.

Here are all four of the blocks made from the same fabric.  I have another color or 2 of this fabric and I forgot to look for it yesterday.

I did look through my Kaffe collective fabrics for some more lighter green prints.  Also one more rust color.  I cut a 9" strip off each of them and I ...

Quilting started........... from Exuberant Color

After ditch quilting along both sides of the zig zags I quilted one light row with parallel rows of stitching.  I changed my mind about the darker rows and decided to do three passes of wavy lines. I have about 1/3 of it quilted.

I used the yellow butterfly fabric for the backing and a yellow, gold and orange variegated thread in the bobbin.

I pulled some more fabrics for the Arboretum block backgrounds.  So far I have only used Kaffe collective fabrics for the trees.

This is the one on the top left.  I can probably get several ...

More Charley Harper........... from Exuberant Color

I chose 5 more Charley Harper fabrics to nest between tree blocks.  There is a squirrel and some raccoons to add since they like trees too.  I also cut duplicates of the pieces I showed yesterday so I'll have enough to play with when I make more Arboretum blocks.

My Saturday night sewing ended up being log cabin blocks.  I have 4 completed and 4 needing their last strip.  That will make 24 blocks total.  Still a long way to go for enough for a quilt since the logs finish at 1".

The Moss Roses are starting to expand ...
