Melting in the heat.............. from Exuberant Color

The heat is getting to me.  Yes, I have 2 window A/C units and many fans but.....

I managed to get 2 more blocks sewn for the Arboretum quilt but couldn't bear the thought of turning on the iron.

Here are all four of the blocks made from the same fabric.  I have another color or 2 of this fabric and I forgot to look for it yesterday.

I did look through my Kaffe collective fabrics for some more lighter green prints.  Also one more rust color.  I cut a 9" strip off each of them and I ...

Quilting started........... from Exuberant Color

After ditch quilting along both sides of the zig zags I quilted one light row with parallel rows of stitching.  I changed my mind about the darker rows and decided to do three passes of wavy lines. I have about 1/3 of it quilted.

I used the yellow butterfly fabric for the backing and a yellow, gold and orange variegated thread in the bobbin.

I pulled some more fabrics for the Arboretum block backgrounds.  So far I have only used Kaffe collective fabrics for the trees.

This is the one on the top left.  I can probably get several ...

More Charley Harper........... from Exuberant Color

I chose 5 more Charley Harper fabrics to nest between tree blocks.  There is a squirrel and some raccoons to add since they like trees too.  I also cut duplicates of the pieces I showed yesterday so I'll have enough to play with when I make more Arboretum blocks.

My Saturday night sewing ended up being log cabin blocks.  I have 4 completed and 4 needing their last strip.  That will make 24 blocks total.  Still a long way to go for enough for a quilt since the logs finish at 1".

The Moss Roses are starting to expand ...

Some cutting........... from Exuberant Color

I went through another box of larger scraps of Kaffe collective fabrics and found a few more that might work for the tree blocks I showed yesterday.  I'm not sure about the 2 dark ones. Next I need to cut more greens.  I also cut more colors of the Aboriginal Dot print that is the branch fabric.

Someone inquired about how to find my very first post on my blog.  On the right sidebar of my blog there is an Blog Archive section below my label list.  There you can click on the arrow before any year and then ...

Basting and sorting............ from Exuberant Color

I finished basting the African colorwash wallhanging but didn't start the ditch quilting yet.  I have to clean off the top of my cabinet so I can quilt it with my Pfaff.

I'm back to finish sorting the light batik fabrics that were on 2 shelves that I showed a few days ago.  Most of these are quite large prints or multicolor or dark cream background colors.

Here is a look farther down this stack.  I need to pull out any I think I will never use and restack ones that can be used together.

I cut straggly ...

Scrappy Batik from Heart Desire Creations

There are seven bins full of batiks in my studio, one of which is scraps. From the book “Scrap=Basket Bounty”, I chose the Snippets pattern to make use of the scraps. The cuts are 1 1/2″ squares and 1 1/2″ by varying lengths. There are 80 blocks with 16 pieces in each – in all 1,280 pieces! Here is the first round of piecing:

Then another. Chain sewing makes for quick work, but I’ll admit to getting bored part way through and switched to another project.

Finally, there were blocks to put on the design wall ...

Between projects............. from Exuberant Color

Even though I have a long list of quilts I want to start, and an equally long list of tops that need quilting, I always have this lull after I finish a project, or in this case 2 quilt tops.

So what do I do?  Look through some Kaffe books that I have bookmarks in to see what I can add to the list.  This one is my favorite in the Quilts in America book.  But then I looked at the cutting directions and it requires 1296 light triangles and 1296 dark triangles.  I think I'll pass on this ...

Cleaning up........... from Exuberant Color

When cutting quarter square triangles on my die cutter it leaves a triangle at each end large enough to cut a 3" finished half square triangle.  I was able to cut 149 triangles yesterday as I cleaned up the table.  The little metal bin has all of the tiny scraps for the whole quilt plus these triangles.

I sorted the triangles into stacks of like fabrics.  I have some long strips wide enough to cut more triangles so I may do that today.  I'm thinking about making a zig zag baby quilt with these triangles.  I need to cut ...

Continuing to search for yellow........ from Exuberant Color

Yesterday I looked through my Kaffe fabrics for yellows.  Some of them have green in them and may get pulled out.  Also the top left one has a lot of pink but I could fussy cut the yellow areas.

I need to look through my Philip Jacobs fabrics next and maybe Brandon Mably's fabric too.

I have made 2 yellow quilts in the past.  The one on the left has a lot of apricot and pink in it too and is all Kaffe collective fabrics.  I started out with a pattern in a Kaffe book but then added more ...

Another Group Effort from Heart Desire Creations

At the April retreat, participants put together this simple block.

One of the retreaters suggested I put the blocks together this way so as to not have to match seams. Great idea!

I found this layout boring, so I decided to have some fun with slashing the blocks.

Four of the slashed blocks made this cool design:

Here are all the blocks put together. Note that there is a secondary design.

It now needed something more and it wasn’t wide enough. Back into my bin of donated fabrics to add two side borders.

A Hospice flimsy – yeah! It is ...

Lots of yellow............. from Exuberant Color

I searched through my yellow fabrics for the most likely ones to play nicely with each other.  I eliminated the ones that leaned off off to green or orange.  I still don't have any idea what pattern I will use but I hope I figure it out today.

As a reminder this is the fabric I have purchased for the backing and I'll use some of it in the front too.

I still have to go through my 2 boxes of floral fabrics and my Kaffe fabrics so some more prints may be added.

A little retail therapy.......... from Exuberant Color

I really don't "need" any more fabric but my next quilt is planned to be all yellow.......so when this appeared at $5.99 a yard I had to order enough for a quilt back.  Today I will pull all of my yellow fabrics and hopefully a pattern will jump into my mind and I could start cutting for it.  I plan on using regular printed quilting fabric, not batiks, but I do have a couple really light with yellow batiks so I won't say positively no.

But wait....there is more.  You know the drill, add a ...

Make May Modern from Becca's Crazy Projects

Last Saturday the Baltimore Modern Quilt Guild held their Make May Modern one day retreat. I didn't attend in person but they encouraged everyone to make a tote using the Ruby Star Society Reusable Shopping Tote pattern (free). Since I didn't attend I decided to at least sew along with part of my day and make the tote. This fabric has been in my collection for more than five years. I'm pretty sure it came to me as a mystery box of quilting cottons from Craftsy. Large prints almost always become totes or bags because I don ...

Downstairs, upstairs............. from Exuberant Color

I was determined to find at least one backing for a finished quilt top yesterday.  I ended up with this Martha Negley print for the back of the Economy block quilt.  I have 2 large pieces of it so there will be some left to use in another quilt.

Then it was back upstairs (main level of the house) to work on triangles.  I sewed a batch of 3" triangle squares and then created 4 columns with them.  They aren't sewn to each other or to the panel of 2" squares yet.  I need to press them first.  When ...

A Start from the Stash from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Even though 2022 is the year I am focusing on my UFO list, it is still important that I make a few quilts from my stash.  I have a lot of fabrics I need to use before I leave this life!

I decided to play with some of my Kaffe Fassett stash.  I used my Hex N More Ruler to cut a bunch of 8.5" Hexagons and some 4.5" triangles.  I think this is my favorite specialty ruler of all time.

The pieces will fit together like this.  Some of the hexagons will have the same color triangles ...

Still sewing............. from Exuberant Color

I'm taking my time sewing this quilt top together.  I got 5 rows sewn Monday night and 7 more rows sewn last night, 2 more rows to add and then the cross row seams.  For all of you who were going to ask, the fabric line is Robert Kaufman Wishwell Weather Report.  I used one layer cake and then bought a few yardage pieces of light colors from the line so I could make it a little larger.

If you have been reading my blog the last 2 days you saw the black and white fabrics that I showed ...

Squirrels, Squirrels, Squirrels from Heart Desire Creations

Everywhere! Last week I wasn’t much in the mood to sew. When I went into my sewing closet, I followed a squirrel and emptied most of the fabric and some other goodies out! Sorting and folding for several hours. I now have this basket of goodies to cut into scraps. Some day soon I’ll get out my studio cutter and reduce the pile to squares and strips.

The closet looks so good now. I could not bring myself to take a before pick. Such a coward!

Not all my fabric, just yardage and batting scraps.
Packaged batting and ...

A small beginning from Quilt in Progress

I’m calling this a stringy baby quilt. I chose the “Trash to Treasure” quilt block from my last post. I’m making it on a smaller scale of course. I decided not to cut the block into quarters and sew them back together, because I’m sewing it with backing and batting together to make a prequilted block.

I began with a square of white fabric, 2 1/2 by 2 1/2 inches. I cut a piece of batting and a piece of fabric for backing at 5 by 5 inches. I centered the small square over the ...

Hands2Help -22 from Sew Sunshine

I am once again participating in Hands2Help comfort quilt challenge. This year Mari @ Academic Quilter is hosting. You can find out more information by clicking on the link above.

I chose the Little Lambs Foundation for Kids again.
I am also working on several comfort quilts for my local Quilts for Kids
So far I am working on an idea for a scrappy quilt.

I am using bright or solid 6.5" squares I cut out of a box of scrapped FQ's. I have just enough to make the quilt using my randomly sewn together scrap strips.

I think ...

A Fingerpaints finish-tada! from Sew Sunshine

This is the Fingerpaints quilt by Quiltfortco from last summers qal.
I used her pattern but made it improv style. I used a ton of scrappy solids and tone on tone pieces from my stash along with tons of strips in my scrap bins.
I finished it out a little bigger by using a few more strips.
74" x 79"

I grabbed a few photos but it has been super windy the last couple of days.

This was truly a fun quilt to make. I love the play on light with the fabrics and I ...
