Looking ahead................. from Exuberant Color

I need to use the double design wall in the basement for the pink/green layout but I also needed to be upstairs to watch the season finale of some TV shows.  I decided to spend my time pulling the fabric for a couple new quilts.  I have made this one before and really liked it.  I decided to do one in mostly blue batiks.

This plastic drawer unit has 5 drawers and now all of the strips I have left fill just 3 of the drawers.  I started cutting the 2.5" strips over 20 years ago and keep ...

Deep diving the stash............... from Exuberant Color

I pulled a stack off my shelves of Kaffe fabric and went through it piece by piece.  I found a few more pieces for my pink and green Tussie Mussie quilt.

I could go through some more stacks but I think I'm good now.

I showed my Kaffe Fassett stash last June when I brought it all up to the main level.  The empty crate at the right is filled now.  The shelf that I searched through is at the bottom of the black shelf unit on the right behind a small crate.  On the left on the bottom ...

Finding more fabrics for triangles............. from Exuberant Color

Yesterday was errand day so I didn't get any cutting done but I had a lot of fun searching for more fabrics for the 2 quilt plans from yesterday's post.

I was looking through the Philip Jacobs stash and found 2 more that I think will work.  The pink should work in both quilts and the other 2 in the pink/blue quilt.

I found quite a few more greens with the triangles from yesterday here with them.

I sewed some of the triangle pairs last night but haven't pressed them so there is nothing to show ...

One more fabric............ from Exuberant Color

I found another Kaffe print in the same red/orange as the button fabric for a possible choice for binding. I have to check all around the edge and make sure that fabric wasn't used in an edge block.

I spent all morning yesterday sorting my brown/rust/gold fabrics.  They had been displaced when I started moving things around in the basement.  I love the rich earthy tones but they don't seem to be very popular with most people.  These fabrics were formerly on a shelf unit where my black and whites reside now.  I can move ...

Layouts............... from Exuberant Color

There are more little 1.5" batik squares to make more 9 patches but I decided to play a little with layouts.  Edge to edge isn't very spectacular.  Since the blocks will finish at 3", this would only be 12" x 18", about the size of a placemat.

Spacing the blocks out with plain blocks between would stretch this to 18" x 24".

With the blocks on point they measure about 4.25" across so this would be about 21.5" square.  After sewing 400 of the 4.5" 9 patches I'm not very anxious to sew a ...

Still organizing.....or was I playing with stash............... from Exuberant Color

I'm still moving things around in the basement and I came across a selection of darks and lights and decided to expand on it and add reds.  I have used 20 of these fabrics in 2 other quilts and added 17 more for variety.

These are the 2 quilts with 20 of those fabrics plus more that are gone now.  I gifted the quilt on the left but still have the one on the right so I could match up fabrics in my stash.  I have an idea percolating for the next quilt.

Last night I sewed strip sets ...

A few things............. from Exuberant Color

I wasn't very organized yesterday but I got a few things accomplished.  This quilt came back from my longarm friend Robin and it was time to trim it to prepare for binding.  This one is called Autumn Coneflower 2 and you can see the whole quilt here.   This one is made of batiks and it is one of my favorite quilts so I think it needs a hand stitched binding.  I need to look for a suitable fabric today.

I also added one more batting strip to a pieced batting to make it large enough for the bright color ...

More auditions.............. from Exuberant Color

I filled in all of the spots with a couple more reds and lots of yellow/gold choices.  Some of those pieces were at least 2 yards so it was a challenge to get the pins to hold them up.  I found one more piece of the Lotus Leaf print so I put that one up in the top row.  (click to enlarge the photo)

I had tried the maple leaf with the LeMoyne star blocks before when I was trying to decide what I was going to do.  The cabbage print is interesting.

I only have a half yard ...

Auditioning................ from Exuberant Color

There were a couple fabrics I knew I wanted to try for the alternate blocks.  Top left is one, Enchanted.  Another was Dorothy, right end of 4th row.  At that point I could see I wanted to try some more choices.  I even wondered if it should be a variety of prints to fill the spaces instead of just one fabric.  I just kept pulling fabrics and pinned them all to the wall.

I don't have enough of this Enchanted if I choose it but it's still available to purchase.

When I added this one I really liked ...

An everything day................ from Exuberant Color

First thing in the morning I went through the light neutral Kaffe collective fabric bin.  I found 11 pieces that I think will work for the pieced inner border I talked about on yesterday's post.

Then it was time to grocery shop, vacuum and do laundry.  I never got around to cutting the neutral fabric strips.  I need 50 of the 1.5" x 6.5" pieces and 4 squares 1.5".  I can get 6 strips plus some squares out of each 1.5" crosswise strip.  That will yield more than I need but will give me ...

11 more reds................ from Exuberant Color

Yesterday was a family day.  I baked frosted creams in the morning.  In the afternoon I went to our early Thanksgiving at my son's house.  My granddaughter's family from 6 hours away was there along with the local granddaughter's family so I saw all 5 of my great-grandchildren in the same room for the first time.  We took a 4 generation photo.  What do you think the odds are that they are all smiling and all have their eyes open?  My son is proficient with Photoshop so I have high hopes.

When I got home I went ...

Photos from the past few days.................. from Exuberant Color

This was the scene on Halloween a half hour before the trick or treat hours started.  The wind was whipping the snow around.

This was 15 minutes later.  It was only 31 degrees so the snow stayed overnight and then melted yesterday.

One of the little goblins reached in for her candy and chose a Hershey bar.  She said "chocolate for my daddy".  Is that cute or what?

I took a photo of the snow on the Viburnum bush around noon in case that was all the snow we were going to get.  I always like to record the first ...

Baking, pressing, searching....... from Exuberant Color

My treats for today and tomorrow

I like my sweets and want some in the freezer to pull out when I have a craving.  I don't like to have the whole batch though so when there is someone to bake for, I bake the things that I want and hope the recipient will like them.  I visited my granddaughter yesterday and took some of it to her.  The little great-grandson is 2 weeks old now and he and his brother slept through my visit.

I pressed the Bear Paw quilt top and got it up on the design wall ...

A New Look at the Stash from Lovin' Life At The End Of The Dirt Road

I haven't had a single minute to sew this month. I've been trying to bind a baby quilt for about 6 weeks now. LOL. But there were miscellaneous piles of this and that teetering on shelves and counters in my sewing room and I knew it was time to put things back in order. Occasionally, I will pick up fat quarter bundles or Layer Cakes - especially when they are on sale - recently, I stumbled upon

Cutting and auditioning............ from Exuberant Color

While the washing machine was running I turned on the iron and pressed the pile of things waiting patiently for about a week.  Part of the pile was the fabric for sashing on the Bear Paw blocks and border fabric for the African elephant quilt top.  I got all of the pieces cut for both of these projects.

I pulled a few brown/black batiks for possible binding choices for the larger of the 2 colorwashes that I just quilted.  I didn't have the camera quite level with the choices but this can give me an idea how they ...

A resting day........... from Exuberant Color

After all of the outside work Wednesday I needed to rest my body yesterday.  The only thing I did besides laundry is look for sashing fabric for the Bear Paw blocks.  I looked through 2 large bins of brown, beige, gold, and rust and this one is my favorite so far.  For everyone who thought plain black or tone on tone was the best choice, I didn't look at either of those.  I was looking for a stripe but didn't find one I liked.  I need 7/8 yard of fabric for the sashing strips so that limited ...

Geese are done............ from Exuberant Color

I finished sewing the Flying Geese blocks yesterday afternoon.  I decided to try 3 mock ups for possible use for them so I can refer back when I'm ready.

This Dutchman's Puzzle block would be 12" finished.  I think I have 120 Flying Geese blocks so I could make 15 blocks.

This is the layout that was on the little scrap of paper on the tray holding the triangles.

I was surprised when this one happened when alternating rows of dark geese and light geese.

For now the blocks will go into a labeled box for later consideration ...

Moving on to the next project................. from Exuberant Color

There were several pieces of strip piecing left from a previous African fabric quilt and one new dark pink set.  There are 6 different sets here, green, blue, pink, purple, rust and gold.  I need to remove the short strip from the rust set and then they will all be about 17" on their shortest strip.

As a reminder this is the quilt on which they will be used as borders.  First I need to cut a border of the fabric in the photo below to go all the way around and then I will figure out what widths I ...
