Raspberry Cheesecake - Square in a Square alternate block Quilter's Recipe Box from Pamela Quilts

 Raspberry Cheesecake coloring sheet
Today's alternate block for the Square in a Square unit comes the EQ7 library - it is called Raspberry Cheesecake.  I'm not sure where the dessert themed names for these blocks came from, but they are a lot of fun!

This block is different because it uses the Square in a Square units on the sides of the block.  When you do this, the triangles in the corners make a small variable star in the center of your block, and you can achieve a variety of effects using contrast, as you can see from the banner at the top ...

Ornate Star - Alternate block for Square in a Square Unit for Quilter's Recipe Box from Pamela Quilts

Sorry to be so late today with my post.  I usually like to get the blocks worked up early so I can write my post over the weekend, but that did not happen this week.  I was busy doing some secret sewing for Island Batik!  I'll be sending my quilt out for the Fall Winter Catalog tomorrow, but I can't share about it until September.  That't the hardest thing about making projects for fabric companies - you work so far ahead and have to keep the fabric hidden until the appropriate time!  But it is fun, too!

On ...

Gathering Mystery {Week 4} from Little Bunny Quilts

Despite the fact that the Week 7 (!!!) directions come out today, I have only just finished Week 4 which seemed to take forever, mainly owing to the fact that I am a crazy person and decided to make the Queen sized quilt.

For Week 4, our assignment was to make two different square-in-a-square units. I had to make 64 of one of the units and 40 of the other. I spent a lot of evenings pressing and trimming dog ears while I watched baseball. And of course, LOTS of chain piecing.

Another thing that took quite a while was meticulously ...

Welcome to the Let's Bee Social!
So glad to have you join us for the Let's Bee Social weekly linky party!

I've always found the Economy Block, also known as the Diamond in a Square or Square in a Square quilt block, interesting. So when I was approached by Free Spirit Fabrics, asking if I would like to play with these cute panda prints... I jumped at the chance to make a baby quilt using great big 12" squares!

These adorable prints are from the Pandas collections by David Walker. This collection is available for pre-order now ...

Economy Block Tutorial from Sew Fresh Quilts

Today I am sharing a tutorial for the Economy Block. This traditional block is also known as "Diamond in a Square" or "Square in a Square" quilt block.

This block has always appealed to me. I have seen many versions made by so many other quilters. But it isn't until now that I am finally making a quilt using these blocks myself!

For my quilt I am making 12" quilt blocks.
But this tutorial will allow you to make the Economy Block in sizes ranging from 4" to 15".

The first column in the cutting chart shows what the ...

Tutorial Reboot Featuring Guest Amy Ellis from The Cutting Table Quilt Blog - A Blog for Quilters by Quilters

Missouri Star Quilt Co. Tutorial Reboot with Guest Blogger Amy Ellis

Hi there! I’m Amy Ellis, first a wife and mom to four kids, second a quilt and fabric designer, with five books to my name, most recently Modern Heritage Quilts! I learned to sew garments as a girl, and taught myself to quilt as I became a mom. By the time our fourth came, I realized how much I needed the creative outlet for my sanity, and was piecing and quilting on a daily basis! I’m so blessed to MAKE and inspire others everyday.

Machine Quilting with Style: Square in a Square Re-Imagined from Christa Quilts

Square in a Square is my second favorite quilt from my book Machine Quilting with Style. (Click here to find out which one is my favorite.) I really tried to play with alternate grids and negative space when I designed this quilt. I combined two of my go-to motifs when quilting it: free-motion boxes and walking foot square spirals. I love that it includes a bit of both methods I teach in the book.

Square in a Square is currently being exhibited in the modern category of the Pacific International Quilt Festival and it hung at Road to California earlier ...
