Daruma Yokota Sashiko Thread from The Ardent Thread

In the summer of 2019 I visited the Daruma Yokota thread dyeing factory in Kyoto, Japan. As our wholesale company, Orimono Imports, is a distributor for the brand and our retail shop, Kimonomomo has sold their thread for several years, I was hoping to learn more about the dyeing process and brainstorm some new ideas. In both regards, the visit was a resounding success.

Kyoto is typically hot and humid in summer, so much so that I always get blisters on my feet, no matter what kind of shoes or sandals I wear. With all the walking I do it ...

Baby Lock Sashiko Machine Unboxing from Expect Moore

I’m super excited to share with you my latest toy! When I create my Christmas Wish List, I often put impractical items. To me, a wish list isn’t a shopping list for people wanting to find me a gift, it is a chance to dream about all the toys that I’d love to own someday. […]

Sashiko stitching and visible mending from Quilting & Learning

I had another great learning weekend! At the top of my quilting bucket list is a trip to the International Quilt Festival in Houston. Yes, one day I will go there...in person. However, this year I was able to attend a few virtual workshops offered through the festival.

Sashiko stitching

I took 3 courses and today I want to tell you about Sashiko Essentials - A Modern Adaptation of Ancient Handwork. The master class was taught by Shannon & Jason Mullett-Bowlsby of Shibaguyz Designz.

Sashiko printed designs - two of five are now done

I've been interested in Sashiko stitching for ...

Kimonomomo Library List Part 2 from The Ardent Thread

Sashiko and Boro reference books – hard to find/out of print editions worth seeking out

Three lovely books for visual and text reference. One in Japanese, and two in both English and Japanese. These are not how-to books, but beautiful resources for getting a feel for sashiko, kogin, and boro textiles in historical context.

Links provided were valid on Amazon at the time I wrote this, but as these books are out of print they may not be available or may be ridiculously expensive. I’ve provided ISBN numbers for the first two you can use to search for these ...

Sashiko Rainbow Waves from The Ardent Thread

My approach to stitching the traditional Seigaiha Wave design with variegated sashiko thread

There are many variations of Seigaiha – the ubiquitous Japanese wave design that consists of overlapping arches. Turn it upside down and you have fish or dragon scales. Add an extra line or two and you have rainbows. It’s pretty versatile and adaptable. Don’t have printed ...

Rainy Monday ~ Slow Stitching Day from Life in the Scrapatch

My stitching is done on my

This is for a blog hop project coming in May
so it will be awhile before my finished project appears on my blog.

Here is a sneak peek.

It is a cool and rainy day here in the northeast and I am
spending another day enjoying with my hand stitching  in my cozy home.

This is my project for today.

I already stitched the white tree design on navy
and am making another pink cherry blossom
and will be using the fabric on the left to complete the project.

I ...

Sashiko Slow Stitch Sunday from Life in the Scrapatch

Today I started a new slow stitch sashiko project.

I really enjoy these small hand stitching.

This is the back of my project.
I use solid fabric that does not have a front or back side for sashiko.
I have no idea if I am "doing it wrong."
I find and use methods and techniques that work for me.
I mark with a Clover Chaco Liner pen and it rubs off a little as I stitch
but it last long enough for me to stitch and it is not permanent.
I actually put as few marks as possible.
Sometimes I ...

Gypsy baby quilt

Being unable to spend hours and hours quilting as I used to do in the past, due to pains in the back, I just quilted this baby quilt with big stitches, following the sides of the small squares of the four patch blocks, using variegated colored threads. The final result is quite pleasant.

Sashiko table runner from Wendy's Quilts and More

The Tokyo International Great Quilt Festival is on this week, so it's probably a good time to show you my finished sashiko table runner.

I would love to go the Tokyo Quilt Show one day.  In fact I think I'd rather go to the Tokyo show than the Houston show.  The Japanese women love their hand work, and so many of the quilts on display in the Tokyo show are hand pieced and hand quilted.  That's more my style than many of the heavily machine quilted quilts at Houston.

Anyway, here's some photos of my sashiko ...

Winter Blues Blog Hop ~ Stitching Joy from Life in the Scrapatch

My 1st Sashiko Stitches

In my little corner of the world "winter blues" is a malady,
a blah feeling that comes each winter and can take root
indoors during long cold winter nights.
Occasionally it is tempered by days such as these
when the sun shines bright on new fallen snow.

My favorite way to meet and beat the blue days of winter,
when it is so cold even the air feels tinted icy blue,
is to learn something new.
Sew I did ... :-)

This simple stitching project is my choice  for the
