Cross Over Benefits on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

This week's progress

To all my US readers, Happy 4th - I feel so blessed to be an American. Hope you get some time with ones you love.

WoW everyone, thank you for the warm welcome back.  It's always nice to see the internet being used for actually bringing people together.  It's funny, the minute I finally got myself writing and creating, all the normal ideas would pop in my head.  My workflow the last 15 years have been that during my week, I'll get ideas on blog posts and then jot them down quick before they ...

A Weekend at the Cottage from The Cozy Quilter

My friend, Christine, and I had a few days away at the cottage last weekend. We brought our sewing machines, projects, and handwork with us, as well as some books to read and good food to eat.  It was a pretty relaxing weekend.  A storm blew through and the power was off for 12 hours, but we found lots to do.  We even toasted bagels and boiled water for tea on the BBQ!

I started a Tiny House quilt (online class by Jo Avery).  My houses still need roofs and chimneys but I did didn't have the right colour ...

New Beginnings on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

The design so far

So for the last month, I've said I'm going to write my blog on Sunday afternoons.  For 15 years, I always managed to have Thursdays off for quilting and posting my blog.  Then in the last year with a new job change, I'm working Monday - Friday.  Go figure that now that I'm looking at 60, I'm so tired Thursday nights after work that it's become more of a chore to post rather than the pleasure it's always been.  Plus somewhere along the line, I lost my creative mo-jo.

Frame ...

An old UFO off the to do list from The Cozy Quilter

My 10 year old Sashiko project is finally completely done and can go out on display!

I stitched in the ditch around the navy part and then did three rows of quilting in the border.  The binding is on.  I didn't do any quilting in the sashiko panel--I could still add some if I decide later that it needs it.

The backing is a fat quarter I had in my stash.

I had a chance to knit several times in the last week and added another 5 inches to my scarf.  It is 56" long now.

I finished the ...

Flannel Selvages from The Cozy Quilter

I dug out my bin of flannel selvages this week, (yes--I have sorted all my selvages by colour but the flannel ones are all together.) and top stitched them onto a strip of lightweight non fusible interfacing.  These two strips and two others will be used in the scrappy flannel baby quilt that I am making. No matter how hard I try, I never seem to run out of scraps.

The binding is on the quilted Advent calendar for the church bazaar. I added a ribbon to the top of each of the little ornaments and now I am adding ...

This week's activities from The Cozy Quilter

In a previous post, I was lamenting the thickness of the pitcher plant stem in my rug hooking project.  A couple of hooking friends suggested I try hooking  a single line of stitches with two strands of yarn.  This looks so much better!  If you look at the part at the lower end of the stem where the green leaves are hooked around the stem, it looks to be the right width now. You can see from this picture that I got almost all of the leaves done this week.  I hope to move on to the flowers this week ...

Sewing Retreat Report and Gardening from The Cozy Quilter

Last weekend, my husband and I went to the Camp Kintail Crafter's Retreat--Christine, my usual accomplice at retreats, had other plans for the weekend so my husband agreed to go with me.  He did some reading and worked on weathering some model train cars.  We also went for several walks--it was a gorgeous sunny weekend. I finished off the last three blocks for this quilt.  I have not decided what to name it yet... The blocks are not put together yet as they have to be all trimmed to the exact same size first.   They are bigger than standard ...

Pitcher Plant Rug Hooking from The Cozy Quilter

Our daughter arrived last weekend to stay for a few days before taking Finn home.  She and I spent one evening stitching together--I worked on my rug hooking and she did some cross stitching.  Unfortunately, her stitching was off by one square and  she had to rip out quite a bit of what she had accomplished so that project is now in time out!  I think my stem looks too thick so it may need to be ripped out and made skinnier.  Maybe it would look better if some of the background was hooked around it?  Any advice from the ...

The Guild Quilt Show from The Cozy Quilter

The biannual Oxford Quilters Guild Show in Embro, Ontario happened over the past couple of days. As you know, I spent much of my sewing time over the past couple of weeks sewing sleeves onto my quilts for the show. On Wednesday morning, I dropped off my quilts and Christine's quilts so that they could be hung for the show. I entered 11 quilts and my barn quilt into the show and took pictures of each of them at the show.

This is one of the quilts I made for the new Hospice which will be opening this summer ...

Fall Sheep on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

So I did it.  I manage to get through my first rug hooking project.  Let's just say it's rough but a start and I wouldn't quite say a rough start.  Some things I've learned...

  1. Taking a 3 hour starter class to get a taste of a new hobby was one of my better ideas.  It was a relatively small investment ($65 and that included everything you needed including a beginner hook) and you really get a feel for if you're going to like it enough to invest more time and money.
  2. I like rug hooking ...

Technique vs Design on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

Something that I was reminded of this week is that I have a tendency to create in one of two categories.  Either my pieces are all about technique or all about design.  I know lots of quilters who are all about technique.  They buy a pattern and then spend their energy on learning how to create it perfectly.  The closer they get to perfection, the more of a rush they get.

Oh What Lovely Smoke, Elizabeth Barton

Then there's the quilters where it's all about the design.  They work on designing a piece and then figure out how ...

New Beginnings on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

The Fiber Art Studio, John C. Campbell's Folk School

I want to thank everyone for the grace you've shown me as I took the summer off from blogging.  One thing I have learned after having a blog for 15 years is that blogging seems to go in cycles and it's not a bad thing to just go with the flow.  I actually thought of stopping.  Most of my favorite bloggers have.  I get why though.  After so many posts there isn't a ton to say.  My husband talked me out of it.  He reminded me that ...

My Sew Together Bag from The Cozy Quilter

I bought myself a kit to make a Sew Together Bag at QuiltCon in February...it came with a booklet of instructions which I have been following carefully to make my bag.  I have one more zipper and some binding to add before it is done.  The dark turquoise square is a wool needle landing.  This has been a fun project to work on and I look forward to finishing it this week.

I worked on my cross stitch Lupins this week too, adding more purple stitches as well as a few cream coloured ones.  If you use your imagination ...

stash report August 27, 2023 from Making A Lather

I had a finish this week which makes me happy, and, helps with the yearly stash numbers.

At open sew, yesterday, someone, surprised me with a quilt top that she had made with fabric that I had donated last month. First of all, the turnaround time was impressive, and, the fact, that she knew it was my fabric donation. It makes it much easier to let go of my precious fabric knowing someone will enjoy it. She has plans to add a border, too, from some of it.

stash report August 20, 2023 from Making A Lather

I am working on an older ufo called spoolin around. I found the pink I wanted for the setting triangles in my stash, but, I couldn't find a green I like with it for the border. I went through everything on the shelves. anything, I liked I did not have a large enough piece. I have a million yards of fabric, how could I not have what I needed? I checked my back up storage, ahem, yes it is a real thing. Still nothing. I even tried to change colors. So, I repeated the process with blues. I had ...

I didn't buy any new fabric this week. I did find a pile of leftover fabric from my Kristal quilt, and thought I should decide what to do with it, since, I didn't want to put it away. haha

I think I want to make the cover quilt in the bright colors. It is a stack and whack and should be fun. Now I can put the fabric away in a nice box with a book to read until I can get to them.
