Backings , cross seams.................... from Exuberant Color

I took the easy route and made the backing out of the lavender Martha Negley print.  The other 2 fabrics would have been time consuming and I wasn't sure I would even like them pieced together. The backing is seamed and pressed and as soon as I cut the batting, it will all be ready for the longarmer.

I also chose the backing for the table runner.  It has some of the same colors that are in the top but will be interesting on it's own when the table runner is flipped over.

I spent an hour putting ...

Lots of seams............................ from Exuberant Color

I had a few sewing sessions yesterday, first finishing the 10 vertical seams between the columns and then sewing 8 cross seams out of 15.  One more day of sewing on this one.

I cut the border strips and sewed them onto the table runner top.

I'm still trying to come up with a backing for this quilt.  I have 5 1/4 yards of a matching print in lavender if I want to stay with Martha Negley fabric but not match colors front and back.  This would continue the soft pastel look.

I found a one yard piece ...

Border and layout................ from Exuberant Color

I looked through my stash of batiks for more of the background fabric to make a border, but didn't find any.  I found this other batik that looks good with it.  The table runner top is about 12" x 36" right now so I think a 1" finished border will be enough.

I got all of the Tilda squares up on the design wall yesterday afternoon.  You might notice there is a slight diagonal pattern of the fabrics.  I had 11 piles of 16 squares.  10 of them were all alike and 1 of them had 2 sets of ...

Two tops.................... from Exuberant Color

The border doesn't show up that much in this photo but it's there.  This quilt is 7 Martha Negley fabrics that I had chosen 2 years ago and finally got around to using.  It ended up at 69.5" x 85".  Now I'm trying to decide whether to use Martha Negley fabrics on the back, or to go with a light color print from my stash.

Thanks to my friend Mary G, I caught the 2 four patch blocks turned the wrong way in the last 2 row segment.  I'm glad I hadn't sewn it ...

Almost done............. from Exuberant Color

The last two rows have been pieced and are ready to add to the top section.  I could have sewn it on last night but I need to press the top after it's done and it was too late for that.

I also cut the border strips and sewed the border on the Martha Negley fabric quilt.  Another one to be pressed today.

More Peonies are blooming.  I cut some of the ones that fell over for a bouquet for my living room.

I did a little clean up in the front garden.  I had been watching this plant ...

Today is Tuesday...... from Exuberant Color

How many times today will I have to remind myself that today is not Monday, repeating to myself Tuesday, Tuesday, Tuesday.

Rows 1 through 8 out of 10 are sewn together now.

And then I folded it and pinned to make room for the bottom 2 rows.

Then I placed a few pieces up on the wall to continue the design.  I'll work on placing the final pieces on the wall today.

The red Weigela is starting to bloom.  It is my favorite.  I need to trim back some branches after the blooming so my neighbors won't get ...

64 blocks sewn..................... from Exuberant Color

I designed all of the rest of the blocks that would fit on the design wall and sewed 29 to add to the 35 from yesterday.  Now I need to sew this big section together and move it up the wall so I can design the last 2 rows.

With any luck I will get this top sewn before the end of the month.

I pulled all of the pieces I needed for the last 16 blocks and put the unneeded pieces in the 4" storage bin.

This is the best looking section in my front garden.  My rain gauge ...

More layout............. from Exuberant Color

I moved the blocks another 4" to the left and now the width of the layout will fit on the design wall.  The height though is not ideal.  I have to add 2 more rows at the bottom.  I may end up sewing the top part and double it up on the wall to design the last 2 rows.  I have 35 of 80 blocks sewn.  There are 40 of each style block.

Here is how much the tomato plants have grown.  May 11 on the left and May 23 on the right.  This one is the Early Girl.

The ...

Moving blocks............................ from Exuberant Color

I moved part of the blocks to the left but I can see I need to move them a few more inches.  Everything on the left side is sewn into 8" blocks.  I need to fit 3 more 8" blocks to the right of the top rows.  I finished cutting the squares that I need to finish the layout so I just need time now to design and sew the blocks.  I'm happy that this one is working as a scrappy quilt.

I have the first blossom on a tomato plant with more forming.

I was down at the ...

More designing, a little sewing................. from Exuberant Color

Center #4 seemed to be the favorite in yesterday's comments.  I haven't made a final decision but I think it will be the one.

I took this photo as a reference because I need to start sewing blocks.  I have to move 2 sets of 8" blocks to the left on the design wall so I can get the rest of the layout up there.

I have sewn all of the blocks in the first 2 columns and the top 2 blocks in the 3rd column.  Today I'll start moving pieces to the left.  I cut lots ...

Continuing from yesterday............................. from Exuberant Color

At the left is the photo I showed yesterday of the beginning of a layout, inspired by a Mary Ellen Hopkins layout (also shown yesterday).  On the right is my box of 4" components, cut over a period of a few years.  I did some more trial layout choices to see if scrappy was going to work.

I don't have a lot of light fabrics already cut but there were enough to get a feel for how this is working.  I tried 4 different centers and this was the first one.

Here is number 2 center trial.  This is ...

Quilt top......and other things........... from Exuberant Color

The top is sewn together but I haven't decided whether I'll add a narrow border of the same fabric as the quarter square triangles.  I staystitched the  edge so it's ready for border or not.  It is 64" x 80".  It is made of Martha Negley fabrics.  She is mentioned in at least one of Kaffe's early books.  Most of these fabrics are from her earlier lines.

Later in the day I did some more cutting with my new 8" die.

Here are the rest.  There are 2 of some of them.  Then it was time ...

Layout complete...................... from Exuberant Color

All of the blocks were finished in time to do a layout on this Martha Negley fabric quilt.  I didn't get it sewn together yet.  There are only 7 fabrics used in this quilt, not my usual 50-100 different fabrics.

I spent most of the evening cutting squares and triangles out of scraps created in the last month.

Here is my photo matching the quilt I'm working on.  I wanted to get out to the back garden and take a photo of the pink Columbine for several days, but it has been so windy.  Finally yesterday afternoon I ...

A few complete blocks............. from Exuberant Color

The first task yesterday was pairing the final round of triangles with the square in a square blocks so I can make them into Economy blocks.

There are 5 total combinations of fabrics.  The quarter square triangle fabric is the same in every block.

This is one of each of the combinations after sewing but before pressing.  I actually sewed 2 of each last night.

The blocks are 16" so this gives a better perspective of their size.  The quilt will have 20 blocks.

I tried one more time for a close up shot of the Yellow Salsify and had ...

2 years............................... from Exuberant Color

About 2 years ago I pulled some Martha Negley fabrics for a quilt and I even pressed the fabrics to prepare for cutting.  I went as far as pulling one of the 3 dies to do the cutting and all of that was laying on a table for 2 years...yes, 2 years waiting for me to start it.  I kept having second thoughts about my original idea.  Yesterday I just went with the first idea and in one hour had all of the pieces cut for 20 blocks.

On the right is a few of the centers of the ...

Quilting and border audition................. from Exuberant Color

I quilted these 2 table pieces last night and trimmed them.

Since the fronts are multicolor I'll probably choose a binding that I like with the back and it will most likely work with the front just fine.

A couple days ago I showed some leftover pieced strips that might work as a border on one of 2 quilt tops in progress.  This is the first one with the pieces on the right side and bottom.  I think they look good.

I tried them on this one too as top and bottom borders.  I think they are okay on ...

Quilt back home............. from Exuberant Color

My Kaffe Blue Pinwheels is quilted and back home from the longarmer.  I'll be looking for binding today.

I sewed the last 10 stratas for Tilda 16 patches last night.  These are duplicates of ones already made into blocks.  There are will be 4 blocks alike of each combination.

It got up over 60 degrees yesterday so I did grocery shopping at 2 stores.  Friday is maybe going to be over 70.  I hope this doesn't mean a warm March and a cold April.

It's finished! from Exuberant Color

I found a nice stripe in the mid-tone of the quilt for the binding and got it sewn on.  This quilt is 39" square.

The backing is a grayed purple even though it seems to be brown in some lights.  The quilt is much softer looking in person, not such high contrast.

I used Hobbs 80/20 in this quilt.

The close up shots show some of the colors in the quilt, like this green print.

There are browns, rust, blue and gold tones.

Burgundy check and a burnt orange are in this shot.

Up in the top left is ...

A little fabric therapy................ from Exuberant Color

I made my first fabric purchase this year.  Yes, it's Tilda again and yes, it was pricey because it is a new line, but I needed a perk.

I bought the smallest pack available, fat 8ths plus 1/2 yard of my favorite fabric.

I finished quilting the baby quilt last night but haven't trimmed it yet.  That will happen today and I'll find a binding fabric and hopefully get it finished.

I was just about out of the cookies in my freezer so it was time to bake something else.  I love this cherry topped cake ...

Decisions, decisions................ from Exuberant Color

Around noon I sewed the new pieces that I had cut earlier in the morning.  I have 125 blocks sewn now and need 144 minimum for the baby quilt, for a 36" square quilt.

Now I'm working on ideas of how to sew this quilt.  I have 4 different triangle fabrics.  One idea was to sew identical strips using the 4 triangle fabrics in the same position in every strip.  There would be many different sets of 4. The strips would then be spaced out throughout the quilt.

The second idea was just random groups, still using one of ...
