Last week I shared a bunch of photos of intricate quilts seen at the AQS Quiltweek in Des Moines, IA. If you missed it, you can see it here. As an educator, the question I get the most is: How do you decide how to quilt something? Checking out the fabulous quilting on these intricate quilts got me to thinking about some intricate quilts that I have done in the past. Quilting intricate quilts, just like any other quilt top, has to be decided on a case by case basis. There is no hard-and-fast rule on how to choose designs ...

I had the distinct pleasure of seeing the PAQA-S 2022 Exhibit at the Sertoma Arts Center in Raleigh, NC this month. PAQA-S is the Professional Art Quilters Alliance-South that promotes innovative art quilts, art cloth, and art garments.

The 2022 exhibit is titled ArtQuilts Emerge.

Their theme is described on the website as follows:
In 2020 and 2021, much of life was put on hold; daily life took on new restrictions. But during this time, we endured; we re-considered what is important; what can be left behind; what does the future look like?

Last week we used a diagonal path for filling a grid. Let’s take off on a tangent and try a few new things with using diagonal quilting combined with grids.
I like to try to find a way to quilt a design that makes it easy to stitch AND gives me great looking results. Win-win! In the design I’m going to show you this week we use a square grid to create a diagonal style fill design. The square grid’s function is to keep our stitching nice and even and symmetrical. The path we use makes it ...

Work on the diagonal
It’s time to branch out and try a little something different. Rather than travel horizontally or even vertically, we can choose a diagonal stitch path. We’ll start simple with an easy loop design.
Start by choosing your grid. Go back to the beginning of our grid discussion to remind yourself how to do that. You can use the piecing or mark a grid on your fabric using your ...

Break Up Your Grid
Instead of filling the grid boxes as is, let’s break up the boxes with a diagonal line.

You might want to mark these lines on the grid (as shown). Or you can just add a little mark, that will remind you which way ...

Swirl
The swirl is a fun one to quilt because it flows so easily. If you are not proficient at quilting swirls, remember to practice this shape every day. Your skill will improve and before you know it you’ll be loving to quilt swirls too!
Let’s start with a little larger grid this time. A 5 across by 4 down will work well for this example.

Moved into a house, found a dried up scrap of linoleum in a kitchen draw … and played with the shapes … and I am still playing five years later.

Some of the shapes have survived quite a few mutilations, and I doubt if most of them look anything like the inspirational originals, but I am still enjoying modifying them, and love the designs possibilities of my play times.
I love both of the designs above.
read moreWe are back this week to our discussion of grid-work. Next up are filled grids. When you want maximum texture on your quilts, filled grids are the way to go. Whenever parts of the grid framework are stitched and other parts are left un-stitched the result is texture.
Why?
Stitching tamps down the batting and creates low places. Leaving parts with no stitching allows the batting to pouf (Isn’t that a great word? I love words that sound like their meaning. Pouf!). The batting poufs up and creates a high place. The contrast between the low place next to ...

I have a lot of project files with many designs I have not shared, and sometimes the file doesn’t get any attention for long periods of time. When I do get around to opening them I sometimes find a design waiting to be shared which almost jumps off the screen saying Look at me, I am lovely.
The one above is one of them!

I rather like the second design as well!
