Summer Sew Along from Becca's Crazy Projects

When the Summer Sew Along was just getting started, I decided I really liked the quilt. I also wanted to use fabrics I already had in my collection. I grabbed this multi-color print a friend gave me, and started pulling fabrics. The pattern calls for half-yard cuts and that isn't a size I usually buy. I did find a couple extra fabrics that I think will work into this quilt and had to narrow down the stack. I think it will be a great quilt. The background fabric is just Kona (I think it is the color Snow).
Each ...

Brown Bag Mystery Quilt from Becca's Crazy Projects

I loaded my first Brown Bag Mystery Quilt onto the frame and got it quilted. You can almost see the quilting in the next photo. I still haven't picked the binding. I have some leftover pink and blue that might work.
And finished my second Brown Bag Mystery Quilt top. I have backing for this one and will get it quilted soon. I bought enough kits to make three quilts but I haven't started the third one yet. It is another solids quilt.

Charming: Tapestry from Becca's Crazy Projects

I have an embarrassingly large stack of quilts waiting for binding. I quilted this charm quilt in March and I attached the binding.
I added my simple label to this one.
Here it is. Finished! I should pull out another stack of charm squares.

Want to see how I cut all of these half-square triangles from 5" charm squares quickly and accurately? Check out this die-cutting post (corrected link).

Charming: Pheasant Hill from Becca's Crazy Projects

It's been a while since I posed an update on my Pheasant Hill charm quilt. I had more than a little yardage of a large floral print on a brown background that I decided would be a perfect backing for this quilt. I measured, cut, and pieced the backing. Then it was time to load it onto the frame and pick a quilting design.
Quilted and trimmed.
Now I just need to attach and finish the binding.

Brown Bag Mystery Quilt from Becca's Crazy Projects

Once the big reveal was out, I started working on piecing the rows.
I love how this pattern was written when it came to putting the rows together. Everything came together perfectly. Well, as perfectly as it can when pieced.
I kept adding rows according to the layout.
I was pleasantly surprised to find I got it right the first time. I had some of the white-on-white background fabric, so I added a 2" border.
Then I added a blue border using some leftover backing fabric I had that matched. I think it came out great! Now to repeat it ...

Brown Bag Mystery Quilt from Becca's Crazy Projects

I had to play catchup with my Brown Bag Mystery Quilt. I was behind for clues 3 and 4. So many half-square triangles! This is the kit from The Crabby Quilter in Annapolis, MD.
I really like working with the solids. They're so forgiving when it comes to cutting and piecing.
This kit is from Mountain Creek Quilt Shop in Alcoa, TN. I bought two kits from them but haven't cut any of the other kit. The last clue is tomorrow and I'm ready!

Making Do from Becca's Crazy Projects

Have you ever needed backing for a quilt and not had the exact single cut of fabric? Let's talk about it.
I needed a quilt backing that measured at least 57" long. I didn't have that, but I did have a cut that was over a yard, and a half yard of another fabric. Perfect!
First, I straightened the edges by ripping the fabric. This makes sure I won't have an issues with the piecing. Then, rip again along the length of fabric. This effectively makes that half yard of fabric into two fat quarters.

Keeping the ...

Charming Maison de Garance from Becca's Crazy Projects

While writing this post I realized I didn't share the name of this fabric line. This is Maison de Garance by French General for Moda.
According to that label, this fabric has been in my collection since 2010.
In May 2023, I cut the charms into 2.5" strips and used them as leaders & enders. If you're curious about this technique for making a quilt on the side (like a quilter's side hustle) while working on other projects, I highly recommend Quiltville. In the free patterns section you will find almost a dozen different leader & ender projects ...

30's Playtime from Becca's Crazy Projects

A friend helped me pick out the backing for this 30's Playtime quilt.
It's scrappy and wonderful.

Brown Bag Mystery Quilt from Becca's Crazy Projects

These little nine-patches were the first clue.
The second was loads and loads of flying geese. I'm going to be piecing these for days.
A little bit of chain piecing makes this go quickly. I use the letter opener to quickly cut the units apart.

Brown Bag Mystery Quilt from Becca's Crazy Projects

How can you have only one?
I discovered Mountain Creek Quilt Shop through the Brown Bag Mystery group on Facebook. I found their collection of classic book covers as color inspiration delightful. So much so, that I bought two more brown bag kits.
I bought The Raven and The Call of Cthulhu. I even added the extra coordinating fabric for borders and binding. I really like the mix of greens and blues in The Call of Cthulhu bag. The Raven will likely be stunning with the almost monochromatic palette.
I started with The Raven. So far I've only made ...

Charming: Phesant Hill from Becca's Crazy Projects

This is my second post about one of my charm pack quilts. Check out the first post from last week to see the cutting tools.
When I say I didn't plan this layout you will just have to believe me. I just grabbed contrasting colors and stitched them into pairs. Then stitched the pairs into sets of four, and so one until I had a row of 16 tumblers. Then I added one more to the end for a total of 17 per row.
I tried to get them to line up so there weren't too many of ...

Brown Bag Mystery Quilt from Becca's Crazy Projects

Last year I participated in a fun mystery quilt designed by Karen Montgomery. I decided to jump in and try another this year.
I chose my brown bag based on the floral print. I'm not entirely sure how I feel ab out the amount of pink fabric but I'm going to go with the flow. I bought this kit from The Crabby Quilter in Annapolis.
The kit comes with cutting instructions to get you started. I did the initial cutter and stacked everything in an project box so I will be ready each week.
The first clue came ...

30's Playtime from Becca's Crazy Projects

There was a time when I would pick up 30's reproduction prints. At some point, a quilting friend gave me some she had. So far, I've made at least three quilts using this fabric. Let this be a lesson about over-buying fabrics.
I cut the charm packs into half-square triangle units using the Accuquilt Go. You have to be careful when cutting 5" charms because there isn't much room for mistakes.
I made a bunch of 4-patch in 4-patch blocks.
In the end, I had enough blocks to make a fun, scrappy quilt. Now it just needs ...

Charming: Pheasant Hill from Becca's Crazy Projects

Continuing my series of quilts made with charm packs, I bring you Pheasant Hill. I have six charm backs and two one-yard cuts of coordinating fabric. This time we're going with tumblers cut using the Missouri Star template.
I also used my rotating 14" by 14" cutting mat. This is great if you don't want to have to reposition the template when cutting. You just rotate the mat. Easy! You can also get a smaller 8" by 8" cutting mat.
This tumbler lets you quickly cut your charm packs into the right shape.
Neatly cut and stacked!
I ...

Fabric Diet Fail from Becca's Crazy Projects

This year I didn't make it very far without buying fabric. I tell myself every year that I won't buy fabric I don't need. Then, I go in search of backing fabric and come home with more than backing fabric. This time, it was a trip to Spring Water Designs. The four, 1-yard cuts in the foreground were fabrics on the discount shelf. I have no plan for these fabrics but they were just too good to leave behind. I also grabbed a cone of Omni for the long arm. Omni is a great thread and one ...
