TUTORIAL: Star Kissed Big Block Baby Quilt from Wedding Dress Blue

When a single block is 28″, it is easy to turn it into a baby quilt, wall hanging or table topper.

DSC01908

BIG BLOCK BABY
Finished size: 36-1/2″ x  36-1/2″

MATERIALS

ONE Size Large (based on 2-1/2″ squares) Star Kissed Block.  It will measure 28-1/2″. You can find all directions HERE.

64 2-1/2″ scrappy squares
1/4 yard background fabric (NOTE:  I matched the background to the star block itself, but it is OK to use a scrappy background as long as it is very similar value.  Otherwise, the star won’t shine as bright)

A Star Kissed Finish from Wedding Dress Blue

The Star Kissed tutorial/pattern is written for four different sizes, and I just HAD to make all of them.  Tops were finished for three sizes and the fourth is in the works, but it was time to get one truly finished:

DSC01908

This is a single block based on 2-1/2″ squares, with borders added.

Finished at 36″ square. A fun table topper, wall hanging or baby quilt.  Or, make four blocks for a bed size quilt (with borders, of course).

Star Kissed Quiltalong: Another Layout from Wedding Dress Blue

How are you doing with your Star Kissed blocks?  Remember there is no hurry, but I do like to know how it is going and if there is anything I can do to help.

DSC01862

Today I am sharing another option for your blocks.  (Information on the entire quiltalong HERE.) Since the quilt is designed in four different block sizes, I decided to make four different quilts to show some ideas that might work for you.

These blocks are based on 1-1/2″ squares.  Four of them, with triple sashing (also based on 1-1/2″) makes a 37″ baby quilt or ...

Bright and happy, the quilt that is from Art In Search

Been dragging my heels to post this because I don't like writing, but like the results. I decided I need to learn some newer techniques and my well used Stripology ruler cracked at the hole they drilled in it to hang. A quilt store a bit away from me was doing curbside service and I was able to get the new Stripology ruler so I could participate in the Quilt a Long by Gudrun
I had a collection of fat quarters that I had put together because they were all happy bright prints. I decided to put together some ...

Make-A-List Monday - Still Looking for Inspiration? from Confessions of a Fabric Addict

Hi, all!

Are you still hanging in there?  Or wandering around in a funk, missing your quilting mojo?  I feel like I've been making so-o-o-o-o many face masks - useful, helpful, but they don't require much thought or skill, and today I took a break and did some piecing that did require both thought AND skill.

It was a good break, and I'm feeling more "centered" now.  Tomorrow I'll get back to making face masks - especially since there's so much more demand now.

In the meantime, if you're not making face masks, and need a ...

Star Kissed Quiltalong: A BIG Block Baby Quilt from Wedding Dress Blue

As you may be aware, the Star Kissed Quilt can be made in FOUR different “base block” sizes.

I am finishing projects in each of the four sizes.  The first top can be seen HERE.

DSC01824

This is the second one.

Made using 2-1/2″ base squares, the top finishes at 36″.

Yep, one block = one quilt.  What a bargain!

A complete tutorial will be posted after the quiltalong instructions are complete, which should be in the next few weeks. You can get all previous posts and information by clicking the Quiltalong Button to the right or by going HERE.

I like the super scrappy look, both in the colors and the backgrounds.  I even made each star point a ...

Star Kissed Quiltalong: Quilt Size Considerations from Wedding Dress Blue

It is time to decide what size quilt you might want to make.  There are so many options!  Aren’t choices fun?

DSC01732

You will notice that I show “base square” sizes, then the block size those will create.  Then, a variety of size quilts you might want to make along with the number of blocks that will require.

Annotation 2020-02-23 153053.png

NOTE:  The finished quilt sizes assume a single sashing between blocks and a single border the same width as the base block size.  I do plan to share a few other options later, but this is enough complexity for now, I think ...

Star Kissed Quiltalong: Block Sizes from Wedding Dress Blue

A few more thoughts on scale.  It is remarkable how different blocks look made in different sizes.

DSC01779.JPG

I have tried the Star Kissed block in four sizes now.  Here they are based on 1-1/4″ squares, 1-1/2″, 2″ and 2-1/2″.

DSC01780.JPG

The blocks finish at 10″, 14″, 21″ and 28″.  WOW!  There’s something to think about!

Star Kissed Quiltalong: Scale from Wedding Dress Blue

As I prepare for the Star Kissed Quiltalong, I thought to share a few thoughts on scale.

It is amazing how the same quilt made with different size pieces changes appearance.  Yes, the block pattern remains the same, but the quilt will feels different.

What size is right?  The size that YOU are happy with.  Yes, I tend to use very small pieces (or small to some people, at least) but that doesn’t mean I am a better-worse-or-otherwise quilter than you are.  It is just that small pieces are my preference.

Husband observed early in my quilting history that ...

Twenty Five Blocks Later from Wedding Dress Blue

The Star Kissed Quiltalong has not vanished.  Life has been unusually busy and I haven’t had the brain space for multi-size block design.  But, I could keep sewing.

DSC01744.JPG

The 25 blocks (based on 1-1/4″ squares) are now complete.  I am still contemplating sashing and borders but hope to have answers and models (and measurements) soon.

Quiltalong Alert: Star Kissed from Wedding Dress Blue

Your response to Star Kissed was so kind!  Thank you!

DSC01732

I am still sewing along on blocks.  There are 8 of them now.  And I still like them a lot.

So, here’s the deal:  If you find this project interesting, start gathering squares–1-1/2″ or 2″ or 2-1/2″.  Whatever makes you happy.  I will shortly produce a quiltalong that will make a quilt using that size.  It has been a while.

Come, sew along!

Make-A-List Monday - So Much to Do.... from Confessions of a Fabric Addict

Hi, all!

The weekend is over, fall has finally shown up in Middle Tennessee, and the realization that Christmas is just around the corner is starting to sink in!  Time passes so quickly - so let's make the most of it.  First of all, a look at last week's list...

I have all the blocks (for three MSW quilts) cut out and prepped for raw edge appliqué, just need to sew them down.

2.  Make progress on the Birch Bark quilt.
No ...
