Leaders/Enders Progress from Heart Desire Creations

It’s amazing how quickly a quilt top goes together when using leaders and enders.  I placed this L/E project at my sewing machine the beginning of the year and now I have the main section together! I set aside all my 1 1/2″ green strips and sewed them all around the outside.

Now I will continue to piece the L/E’s and make a border of two squares across and as many down as needed for the sides, top and bottom.

Unfortunately, I haven’t made much progress on those because I have been doing  string ...

Back from A Retreat from Heart Desire Creations

Talk about fun!  There might have been more laughter than sewing! Thankfully, there was a lot of sewing on my part.  As usual, I brought more projects than I could possibly have worked on. Just in case I have a problem with a project, or if I should get bored with a project, or if I miraculously finish a project, I’ll have another to keep me busy. This was a “Featherweight Lovers” retreat, so we all brought our Featherweight machines. Although not a FW, Dee Dee’s Singer was an absolute beauty and I love her elegant setting with ...

Lots of Color Scrappy Strips from Heart Desire Creations

Two packs of bright narrow strips (Windham Foundation) turned into lots of sewing fun. What a joy to work with such bright prints! I decided to work with columns of the strips and added a wider black and white piece every so often. No real plan here, just fun sewing. This wasn’t going to be very big and when I finished this much, I took a picture. Oh dear, much too busy. It was almost enough for me to put aside but I knew if I did that it might not see the light of day for a long ...

Last Quilt of 2018 from Heart Desire Creations

Taking a break until 2019 is in order but I want to first share my final finish of 2019.  I had many 2 1/2 inch strips of Kaffe fabric. Some were from a design roll and some from another project.  Never have I ever done a Jelly Roll Race quilt so I thought that might be fun. However, after separating the light and darks, I decided on something a bit more dramatic.

Matching the diagonal strips was a bit challenging, but once I figured out the method, it wasn’t too bad. I really like the look and best ...

Scrappy & Grunge – Bohemian Hippie*ish from Heart Desire Creations

Bohemium 4 (Large)

Lots of scraps, cut into strips and squares, put together as quarter log cabins and set on point. I put many of the finished blocks on the design wall and quickly determined that they did indeed need to go on point. After playing and playing with them, I also determined that I wanted a sashing to help really bring out all the pretty prints. I tried lots of solids but it was a no-go.

Bohemiun 3 (Large)

Then I tried Grunge.  Yes! But what color? I went to my fave quilt shop and layed out about 8 different Grunge bolts on a table ...

Love the Birds – Great Outdoors Blog Hop and Giveaway from Heart Desire Creations

An Island Batik AdventureGreat Outdoors Blog Hop

“The Great Outdoors” – what a broad subject! Hubby and I do love the great outdoors. we walk, hike, bike ride, and kayak.  The heat of the summer, however, doesn’t agree with us for such activities and we do spend a great deal of time on our screened porch enjoying the great outdoors of our yard. We have lots of plantings, live among the trees and have a LOT of birdhouses.  Several bird couples have moved in at different times this season, had babies and have now relocated.  Several bird feeders and a bird bath keep ...

Hello July! from Heart Desire Creations

Another month already! Whew – is it just me or is the summer already flying by?  There has been a lot of sewing going on this past month here, but somehow I never seem to feel as though I’ve accomplished as much as I’d like to. About a week was spent sanding and painting my new table. I also took several days to prep backings and bindings for Hospice quilts. Here is one all finished. The quilt top was generously donated by Laurie J. She has donated several to our Hospice group and it is so greatly appreciated! My ...

Farm Quilted Banner from Heart Desire Creations

My cousin Sal has a small farm at the lovely Bed and Breakfast he and his partner Beverly have in the Hudson Valley of New York.  He began the farm portion a couple of years ago and sells garlic and veggies at his farm stand. He asked if I would make a banner type quilt for the stand and I gladly said “yes.”  Originally, I sketched a fairly easy design that would have been quick to make. I planned to use vegetable fabrics and batiks. Those fabrics did get used, however, the design changed drastically when I found patterns for ...

Modern Batik Challenge from Heart Desire Creations

An Island Batik Adventure

image3.jpeg

The ambassador challenge for June is “Modern Batik Challenge.” I decided to make a baby-sized quilt and went to one of my Island Batik bins to choose fabrics.  I love all the blues and pulled out all the small pieces I had left from previous projects and a few of the bigger ones too.  I chose an white with a very light blue print neutral for the background.

image

From a very light weight tissue-like paper, I cut long strips 2 inches wide.  I used those as a base to randomly paper piece all the blue fabrics ...

Mini Square in a Square from Heart Desire Creations

image15.jpeg

At my Spring retreat I began this mini quilt using gray print triangles I had in my stash together with a pack of 2 1/2″ squares I found when cleaning out a bin of precuts.  I attended another retreat where I finished all the blocks and then pieced the triangles for the border.

image

I didn’t put it completely together until I got home because I needed to do a bit of math and design. I chose to do the little cornerstone squares in a square – and yes, they were a pain! I cut a template for a quilting ...

Big Shabby Chic Finish from Heart Desire Creations

image

Much of my stash has bright colors and bold prints. In contrast, I do love white on whites and off-white on off-whites.  A couple of years ago I gathered whatever of those two I had in my stash and bought many, many fat quarters. Apparently it was meant to be because I happened upon a warehouse type fabric shop that had a ton of these fabrics for just $1.25 a fat quarter – score!

image

I wanted the fabrics to speak and not an elaborate design.  I cut a ton of triangles (starched to avoid stretching) and proceeded to sew many ...

Two Projects Ready to Sew! from Heart Desire Creations

It’s time to pack up and head to Blowing Rock for the Spring retreat. I’ll be setting up our sewing room for the Thursday morning start when I’ll greet all the happy, ambitious and anxious quilters as they gather to sew until Sunday!

I have several projects ready to go. The first one I will be doing as a leader/ender project. It is just a simple four patch with a one patch sewn in between each. It will be colorful and fun and fairly mindless – the kind of project I need when I lead a retreat ...

Old Made New from Heart Desire Creations

An Island Batik Adventure – Vintage Quilts Inspiring New Creations

Picture1

I scoured my books, patterns and the internet for hours trying to come up with the project I really wanted to do for this challenge. Then it came to me – an apron! How vintage is that?! I did find a pattern for a half apron that was very vintage looking, (Sewing Geek Harlequin Apron pattern) but with these amazing Island Batiks I knew it would immediately be new and exciting.

I did a little altering to the pattern: one row less from top to bottom and one more row added to ...

A Favorite Season, Blog Hop & Giveaway! from Heart Desire Creations

FOUR SEASONSAn Island Batik Adventure

This is the last Island Batik project for my first year as an Island Batik Ambassador – “The Four Seasons.”  Lucky me – I got to use the new  City Culture 2 collection. The colors and patterns of these fabrics are so rich – I just love them!

Talk about putting the cart before the horse – I made the quilt and then decided on a season. After putting them all together, I just couldn’t choose one of the four seasons – so instead I chose what was my favorite season as a child: “Indian Summer!”  Having grown up on ...

Color, Design and WOW! from Heart Desire Creations

TQ entry (Medium)

This past week hubby and I went to Jonesborough, Tennessee for something quilty for me. I have been a long time fan of Kaffe Fassett and Brandon Mably. Their colorful fabric designs and quilt designs wow me. Meeting them in person was going to be another Wow! Monday night was a lecture by Kaffe and he did not disappoint. He captured the audience with his creative journey and process along with lots of humor and a beautiful slide presentation. Hubby even enjoyed the lecture!

Creative Borders – Fall Table Topper from Heart Desire Creations

An Island Batik Adventure

Creative Borders and Binding Graphic

October’s assignmentBorders and bindings. There was no specific IB group required, so I pulled out my bins of Island Batiks and chose a few fall colors.  Just having finished a Round Robin, and loving it, I decided to do my very own little Round Robin!  I started with a very simple center.

Back to School & Giveaway! from Heart Desire Creations

Back to School Blog Hop GraphicBack to School time has been a bittersweet time for me. The weather starts to cool which is a good thing, but reminds me that our yard will soon be thickly carpeted with leaves and acorns (we live in the woods) that take many, many hours to clear. Also, when my children were school age, I was never one of those parents who celebrated going back to school. I loved having them home! As the temps get increasingly colder, however, I spend more time in my studio – a great thing!

Black and White Beauty from Heart Desire Creations

B&W 3 heARTsCreations

Black and White fabric – love, love, love! Because of that love, I have had lots of scraps. I’ve used B & W in lots of quilts, as an accent, but wanted this one to be just B & W and began cutting lots and lots of 2 1/2″ squares. Luckily, I have a cutting machine!

buckeye beauty block

I chose the Buckeye Beauty block – simple but dramatic, especially with this color choice. For the half square triangles, I used a white on white polka dot and plain black. Two four patches and two half square triangles = great effect!

Interestingly enough, towards the end ...

Round Robin – The Last from Heart Desire Creations

Round Robin (Medium)

RR Brunch (Medium)

Oh how bittersweet to do our last reveal. We gathered at my home to enjoy some social time and brunch. A home can be so much more conducive to chatting and visiting than a restaurant. Oh boy, we quilters sure can talk!

After our meal, we ventured down to my studio to reveal each quilt one by one. I can’t begin to tell you how humbled I am by the talent these 3 ladies possess. First up:

Judy's Round Robin

Judy’s quilt. When I saw this reveal, I immediately thought it had to be my favorite of all of them. The ...
