Oh Scrap! : Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2021 from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Welcome to the first link-up of Oh Scrap! of 2021. I think this will be its seventh year.  That is a whole lot of scrappy inspiration!

It is pretty early in the month, but I am already getting a few of my Rainbow Scrap pink blocks completed.  I scrounged up three shades of pink solids and made these three blocks of my postage stamp quilt.  My PSP2020 will become my PSP2021.

I started this quilt mid year so I only have 14 blocks done to date.  I am usually limited by the shades of solids I have in my scrap ...

waffle blocks from Making A Lather

As I am making postage stamp blocks, I am playing around with these cute little waffle blocks. They are trimmed to 5 1/2 and take 10 - 1 1 /2 inch squares. I found them to be very fun and addictive.

I decided I would sit and cut a bunch  of 1 1/2 inch strips for the framework. It takes 16 1/2 - 17 inch strip to cut a matching set. I was able to cut 106 sets in one evening. It helps that I have 1 1/2 inch strips already cut. I threw the leftovers back into ...

postage stamp blocks from Making A Lather

I have had a lot of fun making postage stamp psp20 blocks with 1 1/2 inch squares. Many of my print squares were a gift from a great quilting friend. So, I get a smile every time I start a new block. I went through a little bag of scraps, and, every time I found a piece big enough for the solid color, I cut for the postage stamp block. I think I will have a lot of red blocks. It's amazing how many shades of red I have found hiding in the scrap piles.

And, for next ...

to do: shine from Making A Lather

I'm still playing catch up from last week. I finished the last Shine blocks that, I had missed during the rainbow scrap challenge.

I had started purple psp 20 blocks and needed to finish them.

It's fall in Indiana. There is a certain blue to our sky that I love. I like the temperatures, but, not the shortening of the day. Hubby has been busy finishing the tomatoes and peppers. And we have another batch of salsa ahead of us. I saw a cute idea for a pumpkin this year, and, we went in search of the perfect ...

postage stamp red from Making A Lather

Little tiny squares and I are having fun in red for the rainbow scrap challenge. Some of the blocks turn out better than others. I don't know if they were not cut accurately or I get in a hurry and sew them too quickly. It's hard to be patient. Each block is different and interesting in it's own way, and, I want to see it.

I was able to sew the red row for the row x row. I have only yellow to go. I plan on putting the rows together soon. I can hardly wait. The ...

easy breezy from Making A Lather

I wanted to try a neutral background for my psp20 blocks. I didn't use a single piece for the light background 1 1/2 inch squares. I just used anything hanging around in the basket I had on hand. I realized I might want to add more dark and light blocks to my growing pile. But, mostly, I will make my blocks according to the color of the month for the rainbow scrap challenge.

I've been adding a few easy breezy blocks each week. I find that, when I poke around in my 2 or 1 1/2 ...

Oh Scrap! : Red from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

With September here, it is time to get out my red scraps for my RSC quilts.  I am down to just 2 active projects right now so I need to start thinking about some new designs.

I dug through all of my red scraps and then my solids stash and I could only come up with three shades of red.  I am hoping in upcoming months I can find or acquire a magenta solid so I can make one more blocks.  This is a longer term project so I have lots of time.

I am using 2" squares so my ...

tiny purple squares from Making A Lather

I have caught the postage stamp bug, and really can't concentrate on my other projects. I have 1 1/2 inch strips, but, very few 1 1/2 inch squares. I wasn't worried, because, I can cut squares from strips. My quilty friend was very supportive, and shared a zip lock bag of squares. It's always fun to see other quilter's fabrics. My plan was to grab a handful, and return the rest. She wouldn't take them back. haha.

My biggest challenge is having a solid strip long enough to do the whole block ...

to do: cut purple from Making A Lather

We have had great weather and have enjoyed outdoors, and, even found a monarch on our flower tubs. We have planted milkweed in our yard, but, it hasn't bloomed. What a surprise to see our own monarch butterfly.

I have spent the month cleaning and sorting my purple scraps as part of the rainbow scrap challenge this month.  I had an entire wire basket of scraps in that color. Apparently, it had been a long time since I sorted through and organized it. I certainly didn't think I had that many scraps.
I don't like the ironing ...

New Rainbow Scrap Challenge Blocks from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

With my two existing Rainbow Scrap Challenge projects only needing a few more blocks to complete, I decided to start some new projects.  Now I can continue to play with purple this month and make more of these newest blocks.

Yes, I have resisted far too long and I am jumping in to the Postage Stamp Party.  This project will help to use up my solid scraps/stash and the "undesirable" scraps in my bins.  I am not going with the traditional 1.5" square - instead I am cutting my squares at 2".  I read on Instagram someone referring to ...

something new from Making A Lather

Ack - never in my life, did I think I would make anything with 1 1/2 inch squares. strips maybe, but, not squares - too small and hard to get accurate. But, Cathy started making these adorable blocks, and I watched, and the next thing I know, I made one. And, then, another one was done. Oh no, what happened. I really like the blocks, and I like making them.....very much
I love the quilting community and all the inspiration floating around.

I have very few 1 1/2 inch squares in a cup by my machine. Usually, if I ...

Seeing Red from Gray Barn Designs

Just a quick update from NY.

I did some math. I hate math. I had some red 1.5″ inch squares. I thought “I can do something with these”. So I planned a queen-sized postage stamp quilt. I quickly sewed through my stash of scrap squares, then I cut a few more squares from random red yardage. I still only had 1 row of the quilt completed. Yikes! I decided to count how many squares I might need. Check my calculations:

  • Each mini block has 12 1.5″ squares
  • There are 15 mini blocks in each row. That means that ...
