All light, all dark, and some half dark/half light.

Mix them up and see what happens.

I like the middle one!

The next one is interesting ….

… as they all are.

More Log Cabin designs next week, mid week.

This project file hasn’t been opened since the middle of 2018!

Made up from mostly traditional half light, half dark Log Cabin blocks, With a few all dark and/or all light added .

I see four log cabins at a cross road!

The colours are rather pretty, as I usually prefer more masculine colours for Log Cabin

There are a lot of designs in this file waiting for their turn to be added to the blog, so I will try to open it up a little more regularly in the future.

Alpine Cross is a block I would not choose to use in a real quilt, but I challenged myself to at least give it a go.

The Alpine Cross features in the first design, but the modifications took over in the second design.
I like blocks which are symmetrical, and I can see a different challenge to tackle in the future … playing with 5P blocks to see just how many symmetrical variations I can find.

All the blocks are the same in these designs, but the placement of colour makes some very different looking stars.

I often wonder why so many star designs are made up with a light background. The stars in the sky show up much better in a dark sky.

Yesterday’s virtual quilts were a reminder of what summer has brought to parts of Australia this year. Today’s designs are the colour we hope to see around us in the not too distant future.

The star blocks are basic, but fiddly, piecing, and I like the faded blocks which add depth to the designs.
I design all my quilts with 12 inch blocks in mind, but they can be made bigger or smaller, though with the details in these designs I would stick with 12 inch or larger blocks.

Lots of room for quilting in the first design today!
Formerly known as South Aussie to Tassie, but I didn’t like the name.
Finding a name I like for a collection of blocks or a project series is often harder than the designing part of the process.

I love playing with basic blocks to see what happens when I want it to go in a border, and added a couple more border block variations after I did the first design shown today.
Something for me to play with in the future.

Welcome to another mid week retreat from the madding world, exclusively for quilters.
I like the design above, but I have just added two variations to the collection waiting for their day in the blog. Not that I am running out of virtual designs to share as there are still about 20 left in this project file.

Another interesting design!

Another one I like, but I am going to try making a change to add another one to the file.

I wonder how many times I have saved the same design … I find the odd one occasionally, but there could ...

Electric Quilt has a tool which I have rarely tried using. I takes a single block and stretches it every which way to create very modern type of quilt designs. I have used the basic block in the border of the quilt design above, but have changed the colours around in the body of the design.

Different block, very different results!
I have a lot to learn about this part of Electric Quilt!

Interesting mix of pieces … could be even more interesting if there were more variety of colours.
The colours can also be rearranged several different ways within the blocks.

I like the second design.

A couple of slight modifications makes an interesting change. I like it too.

My favourite for today is number four!

That is all for today … more Log Cabin variations next week, mid week.

I always find it interesting to see all the designs up close.

Time to retreat from the mad world for a few minutes to inspect some Log Cabin quilt designs.

I love the first two designs, but my favourite for today is not included in those two.

Not too sure what to think of the diagonal design of the third. one.

Number four is my favourite … a combination of rings and diamonds!

I also like the last one for this week’s retreat, but there will be more mid week, next week.
All designs use 36 identical blocks, and there are still heaps in the project file for later on.

This is the last of this project file.

There are aa lot of designs I have saved into a new project, and will share them later.

Before then I am making some minor changes, not including fabric changes.

The main change is to replace the half blocks with solid fabric around the edge with a half square of fabric instead of pieced logs.

There are a lot of designs ready and waiting for the minor change … half of them were waiting to appear in the current file.

I have used just two fabrics in these designs, but with the idea that if I made them into real quilts they would be made with scraps of light and dark fabrics.

This project fie has been ignored for a couple of years, but I think I should play with colours … the hardest part will be picking the colours!

Not the most exciting project file I have started, but I have been playing with old posts and every so often I find some big triangles, and I rather like them!

So I had to see if there were any designs left in the project, and there are heaps, some a bit dull like the first one, some much more impressive like the second one.

Very deep purple , very bright green. Not a combination I had ever thought of. Had thought of similar, but usually a bit lighter.

I didn’t intend dog faces to appear in the two designs, but they did!

At least they don’t bark all day and all night.

Enough with the dogs, how about some pointy bits.

Not too sure that I like the last one … looks a bit weird!

The 9 patch blocks in this project file are put together with simple straight piecing, though the pieces are rather small. The size of the pieces make the blocks look much more complex than they are.

My favourite today is the second design with blocks which appear darker in the corners creating a diagonal light square in the centre. In a real quilt that could be emphasized by quilting straight lines around the square, ignoring the shape of the blocks.

Might need some cool colours over the next few days to take my mind away from the increasing temperatures outside, though it is not going to be as hot as it has been over the last couple of weeks … the last couple of days have been quite nice and have given us a spell in between the hot spells.
I like the first design even if it does have pointy stars in the centre. The colours appeal to me even though I am not usually a fan of blue. Note the quilting lines which outline the block which has been ...

The first two designs in this week’s Log Cabin Retreat has only Log Cabin blocks featuring light fabrics on one side, dark fabrics on the other .

There are similarities, but they are laid out differently. If you make 64 similar blocks, play with the layout before you piece them together … there are many, many designs waiting to be discovered for those blocks.

But, what if you make four all dark fabric Log Cabin blocks? The third design has four dark blocks to replace four of the half and half blocks.

Then back to all identical Log Cabin blocks but ...

Interesting … and in one of my favourite colours.
I am looking forward to being old so I can wear purple!

I like to have at least two colour strips around the edge of the blocks in a quilt, at least an inch or two of one, then a contrast binding. That is the minimum for me, and most times I use two before the binding.
I might have to add some narrow borders tot he designs waiting in this project file.

A very interesting design in one of my favourite colours.
I have been dressmaking over the last few weeks, making up clothes which have been cut out and waiting for further attention for about 18 months, and this colouring featured in several items.

Another very interesting design! It is going to be hard to pick a favourite today!

The one above could be made much smaller by simply leaving out the outer row of all light blocks.
The next one is something a bit more modern …

… it might fit in a modern art exhibition, but not really anywhere near my ...

I love playing with complex blocks by whiting out some of the design and replacing it with quilting motifs of the original complex block design.

Wow!! I love the second design.
A nice way to say goodbye to the old year … wishing you all a happy new year with family and friends.
