Autumn Daze 77, 78 from Virtual Quilter

I like it … old fashioned and restful.

I like the second one too, for the same reasons, but like it more than the first because there is applique!

Log onto Toys 46, 47, 48, 49, 50 from Virtual Quilter

Toy soldiers in formation, with the senior officer inspecting from the rear.

Now the senior officer is leading his men in a Christmas parade!

I love baby blocks as a quilter, and loved building with baby blocks a long time ago, then watching my children building and knocking them down … now love watching a new generation doing exactly the same thing.

Should have mixed up some balls with the blocks as a tower of blocks is a great target for a rolling ball.

Love an old fashioned collection of toys!

More Log Cabin designs mid week, next week!

My Bright Blocks 3, 4 from Virtual Quilter

Not so basic piecing, with sharp points, curved seams and set in corners … something I would do by hand, along with the applique.

Second design is back to basics, but I prefer the first one.

Log Applique Album 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 from Virtual Quilter

Log Cabin quilts have military precision in the placing of the pieces, add some dainty applique and they immediately look more dainty all over.

The precision is still there but certainly allows the soft touch to shine.

Love the design above … beautiful!

The last two for today are very similar Log Cabin layouts, but the applique blocks are more different …

… and I like the change!

My favourite is top right … love it.

That is all for this week’s Log Cabin retreat, but there will be more next week.

Super 7s OP 25, 26 from Virtual Quilter

Not sure about the colours in the first design, but love the design itself. Perhaps it is the applique which makes it a winner for me.

Love the centre block in this one … it works much better on point than it does in a straight setting.

9 Patch ‘n’ Apps 5×5 15, 16 from Virtual Quilter

First one looks neat and tidy, like a small well laid out town if you have an over developed imagination. Town square in the centre housing on each side, parks in the corners and country all round.

Love the second design … just as a nice quilt design!

Patricia’s Patches OP 11, 12 from Virtual Quilter

I like the design, and the colours even though I think they would look like Christmas all through the year, but then a little bit of Christmas everyday would be nice.

The second design has me thinking that a simple pieced star block in low contrast fabrics would make a very interesting background for applique blocks. I feel a new project file is about to be opened, though an alternative approach would be to use the star shape as background quilting around the applique!

9 Patch ‘n’ Apps 14, 15, 16 from Virtual Quilter

Love the first design for today. Who would have thought that such a bland change of background colour could have such a great effect!

I like the second one too, but it doesn’t excite me as much as the first one.

Like the last one, but not as much as the first one … the applique blocks in the corners are too busy … maybe they should just be quilting motifs, or a variety of less busy appliques.

Penny’s Patch Play 17, 18 from Virtual Quilter

It is busy, but I like it anyway.

Like the second one too … it has room for the quilting to shine.

Still not y colours, more my style, but still love the first one more than this.

Quilting at Eleven 29, 30 from Virtual Quilter

The quilting motif in the first design today is based on one of the pieced blocks. I love the flowing lines.

The second design has the blocks set on point and looks much busier.

My favourite for today is the first one.

Patricia’s Patches 15, 16 from Virtual Quilter

Very interesting.

I started designing quilts with assorted blocks, but repeating most of the assortment of designs. Most of the quilts I made before Electric Quilt came into my life were all different blocks, in other words sampler quilts. Doing the same block over and over for a single bed was boring, let alone doing a queen size one.

Since EQ came along I have mixed a few of one block design, a few of another, etc. until I had enough for the size needed. Sometimes there are a maximum of 16 repeats of one block, but neither of the ...

Pieced, Patched, Pretty and Sashed 2, 3, 4 from Virtual Quilter

Every so often I stop playing with block designs, and play with sashing designs instead.

As you can see in these designs the sashing can be used as border designs too.

And then of course, you can add some blocks with some tricky bits pieced to form a frame around an applique.

Today’s designs use the same pieced blocks as yesterday’s designs and the applique blocks appeared two days ago … now I am mixing them up!

Both designs are interesting, but I like the second best.

EQ and Me 38, 39, 40 from Virtual Quilter

Pale but pretty.

The quilt blocks in this project file are from the Electric Quilt Block Library, with a few modifications by me. Modifying library blocks is a great way of learning to use the block drawing tools, but it can be addictive … but also a lot of fun!

One thing I have learned after setting up lots of project files with some less than perfect fabric combinations is that I start with a collection of blocks, but play with the fabric choices before settling on the combination which will make some really appealing designs before designing 50 plus quilts ...
