One quilt top sewn........... from Exuberant Color

I got this quilt top pressed and measured yesterday.  It is 56.5" x 72.5".  The colors are more true in the photo below.  The camera wanted them to look more gold here.

I thought I would finish the zig zag too but I have one more row to sew on to it.

I picked 3 more little tomatoes to finish ripening in the house.  I'm not planning on sharing with the squirrels.

All seams sewn............... from Exuberant Color

After an hour and a half of power outage late in the day yesterday (94 degrees), I had to wait until it cooled off again in the studio to finish sewing the quarter square triangle quilt top.  The studio has 2 windows facing west and it is the farthest distance from the window A/C units.  I have a fan blowing the cool air in that direction. The good news is I did get all of the seams sewn and I will press it today.

Monday I showed the pieces for this quilt with each fabric as a group and ...

Final layout............. from Exuberant Color

I finally decided on a final layout, trying to spread out the darker colors evenly as well as the backing fabric which is in half of the blocks.

Last night I started sewing it together.  I have 5 rows webbed so far in this photo.

Earlier in the day I sewed all of the rest of the triangle squares and just put them up on the design wall as I finished each matching group.  I haven't decided if I should mix them up or leave them matching.

Here is one more fabric I haven't used yet.  I think ...

Starting the baby quilt............. from Exuberant Color

I now have 234 three inch triangles cut from the yellow leftovers and the first pile is sewn.

I pressed all of the quarter square triangle blocks so they are ready to put on the design wall today.

There is lots of yellow outside too.  I kept looking for this Asiatic Lily and didn't see it and then suddenly here it is blooming.

There are lots of the Evening Primrose plants too (see the lily in the background) and they aren't affected by the hot weather.

I love this Hosta.  I need to do a lot of clean ...

63 blocks sewn.......... from Exuberant Color

I cut 12 more triangles and sewed the last 7 blocks and then put all of them in a stack to take to the basement to press.

I mowed part of my yard at 7:30 last night but it was still pretty warm so I'll finish that this morning, the coolest day we have predicted for the next 10.

I was feeling pretty lazy most of the day and did some knitting.  I get all of them up to the last increase row and then no matter which one I pick up to work on, they all will ...

56 blocks............. from Exuberant Color

I'm getting down to decision time.  I have 56 blocks made, 7 across, 8 down, not a good proportion for a finished top. (56" x 64")  I have enough pieces cut for 5 more blocks but not a good variety of prints.  I have plenty more fabric so I guess I might be cutting again today.

I watered all of my pots and the tomato plants yesterday morning and watered the whole front flower bed last night.  We only got a tenth of an inch of rain.  Last night when I went out to check on the tomato plants ...

More variety................ from Exuberant Color

I cut a lot of triangles from the backing fabric and now this has some life to it.  I cut triangles first thing in the morning yesterday and when I got bored with the selection I cut some more.  Three times I was pressing and cutting yesterday.  I think I'll cut a few more new fabrics today.  I haven't pressed any of these blocks yet so I will likely take them all down when I have enough blocks and then start over with the layout.

It only got up to 94 yesterday and the humidity dropped a little ...

Experimenting................ from Exuberant Color

I pressed 8 of my 45 yellow fabrics and cut some quarter square triangles with my Studio die cutter.  These are 8" finished blocks (4 blocks shown).  I sewed up a few just to get a feel for it.

I could also place them every other one with whole squares in the opening or I could find an 8" quilt block I like and use them in the spaces.

As my post title says, I'm experimenting.  I have a lot more fabric to press and cut for the variety I would want in an all yellow quilt.

 I mentioned ...

Revisiting yellow from the past............ from Exuberant Color

I typed yellow into the search box at the top left of my blog and scrolled back through posts that referred to yellow.  The wallhanging top was just completed earlier this year and the table runner is from many years ago.  The table runner has a lot of gold in it and I'm not sure I want that much gold in this new quilt that is trying to form.

Most of the photos were yellow flowers.  These were all taken in years past.

I had one chance to get outside yesterday morning before the heat blast hit us.  I ...

Continuing to search for yellow........ from Exuberant Color

Yesterday I looked through my Kaffe fabrics for yellows.  Some of them have green in them and may get pulled out.  Also the top left one has a lot of pink but I could fussy cut the yellow areas.

I need to look through my Philip Jacobs fabrics next and maybe Brandon Mably's fabric too.

I have made 2 yellow quilts in the past.  The one on the left has a lot of apricot and pink in it too and is all Kaffe collective fabrics.  I started out with a pattern in a Kaffe book but then added more ...

Borders, another row added and a finish............ from Exuberant Color

The border is sewn on and I think it really finishes the design of this little rail fence quilt top.  It is about 39" x 52".  Most of the Kaffe fabrics in the strips are from the 1990s and early 2000s.  I cut a lot of strips about 10 years ago and this was made from that group.

I have a bottom row sewn but it isn't attached yet.  The big blocks on the bottom balance the big blocks at the top.  The binding will be a darkish color to contain all of the edges. This isn't a ...

The first snowfall..........and a little quillting........ from Exuberant Color

We were 40 days past our average first snow in this area and 287 days since our last snow.  I wonder what the rest of our winter will be like.  The snowflakes were huge when I took this photo.

I took this photo before lunch and it snowed for a couple more hours after that.  By evening we were up to 34 degrees and some of the snow was melting already.

I loaded this quilt on the longarm about a week ago and finally I quilted it.

The top thread is Superior Rainbows in a pale variegated color.  Since the ...

Sewn together and backing................. from Exuberant Color

I spent a lot of time in the basement doing odds and ends and then sewed this zig zag together last night.  That is the backing flannel next to it.  It is more of a peach color but I like it with the quilt.  I only need about 1.5 yards for this one and that is a 5 yard piece so I'll have enough for another small quilt too.  I bought the flannel on sale at least 8 years ago and maybe longer so it is good to finally use some of it.

Zig zag time............... from Exuberant Color

I got my zig zag after all on the third pink quilt.  It is a little brighter than this photo, deeper pinks.  I had a lot of the pink and red heart print and wanted to use as much as possible.  I ended up with 7 blocks leftover which can go in the orphan block box.  It should be about 40" x 48" when finished.  I have a big piece of flannel by Valerie Wells with huge peachy-pink roses on it that may go on the back of this one.  I have another more mottled pattern pink flannel for the ...

Pink again............. from Exuberant Color

When I cleaned off my sewing table I saw the pile of pink squares leftover from the second pink quilt.  I counted and there were 65 sewn plus 40 light triangles.  I decided to cut more pink prints to match up with the 40 triangles and got them sewn last night.

Here is another fabric from the purple shelf.  I have a half yard of it and think I need to use it this year.

My Hostas are still at several different stages of growth.  This one is just barely up.

This one is right next to the one in ...

Sewn and pressed................. from Exuberant Color

I finished the sewing and then spent an hour pulling stray threads out of the seams and pressing the top.  It is 48" x 64" made with all 4" finished triangles.

The dark pink with white daisies is from the mid 1990s.  It came in this pink and lime green and I made a quilt for the quilt shop owner's granddaughter out of it.  I am so happy to finally find a place to use my piece of it.

We finally got about an inch of rain over several days and the plants are really popping up.  This is ...

8 more seams to sew............. from Exuberant Color

Last night was a 3 hour TV night so I got all of the seams sewn in one direction and half of the seams sewn in the other direction.  If you look close the top half is sewn and the bottom half is hanging from it by threads.  I started teaching this method of sewing quilt tops together (called webbing) back in 1985 when I created classes for adult education at our local community college.

Then I put the pieces for one Friendship star on my table to see how it will look.  The blocks will be 12" finished and ...

More pink............... from Exuberant Color

This is the latest batch of pink triangles that I sewed yesterday.  I think I might have enough sewn for the layout I have chosen.

I started the layout last night and then it got too late to finish so I'll work on it again today.

I got the center squares for the Friendship Star blocks cut also.

Playing with pink.............. from Exuberant Color

I'm still sewing pink triangle squares and finding a few more fabrics every day to add.  I decided to try a few layouts.

First all marching the same way.

Next I tried one of my favorite layouts, a zig zag.

Then I tried alternating diamonds which is interesting.  I have more to cut and sew so I have time to think about the layout.

It got up to 80 yesterday but I didn't do anything outside.  I was waiting for the UPS pickup of my return equipment to the cable company.  By the time they came I decided ...

Sunday fun.......... from Exuberant Color

I pressed my Hugs and Kisses pink baby quilt top yesterday.  It is 40" square.  I won't quilt it until next month because I already have a line up for this month's finishes.

This is the group of sewn squares so far for the second pink quilt and I will need to sew a lot more.

I cut a new batch of triangles yesterday.  If I cut more they will be duplicates of some that I have already used.  I just need to make a decision if this is a medium size child's quilt or an adult ...
