Sample block and other things............... from Exuberant Color

I made one sample block for the corners (bottom left corner).  This one is  made with just 2 fabrics but the 4 I will make (now that I know it works) will be an assortment of fabrics, just like the side border blocks.  I will be happy to have this quilt top off the design wall.  I don't know why the camera thought it should look pink in this photo.  It is very purple.

I finished sewing these blocks and got them trimmed.  This is one batch of them and there are 2 alike of most of them.

This ...

Explanation of the corner blocks....................... from Exuberant Color

Thanks to everyone who has tried to help me with the dilemma of the corner blocks of my purple Rosy quilt.  Since several were no reply I couldn't comment back to them.  This post showed my first trials for corner blocks.  This photo shows a side border block.  The 2 larger squares touch the outside edge of the center and the rows of 3" squares are on the outside edge of the quilt.  I'm showing that the block will finish at 9" x 10.5".

The corner blocks need to measure 10.5" square.  This photo shows that ...

One more audition.............. from Exuberant Color

More fabrics were auditioned yesterday for the coping strips and this is the only one I'm considering.

I cut some more strips for my other project and sewed them last night.  I pressed the first batch made previously while I was in the basement doing laundry.

We've had some gray days and today they say we will have sunshine and 50 degrees.

Auditioning corners.................. from Exuberant Color

The center of the quilt is still folded up and pinned on the design wall and I tried 3 fabrics as coping strips to use with some of the leftover 9 patch blocks for the corners.

I don't want the corners to be what catches attention first.  Still no decision made.

I pulled out some strips for some mindless sewing while I glance up at the design wall.

I will eventually figure out how to finish the purple Rosy.

Purple................... from Exuberant Color

I pieced a 10.5" nine patch block to try in the top left corner.  I don't like it with seams not lining up.  Next I folded the 5 row sewn part so I could see both the top and bottom edge and pinned it back on the wall.  I now could reach to design a top row and lean down to design a bottom row (minus corner blocks).  I sewed those 5 blocks together for both rows and they will wait for my decision on corners.

I had PT in the afternoon and stopped for grocery shopping on ...

5 rows sewn together....................... from Exuberant Color

The lower 5 rows are sewn together, the top row is loose blocks and there will be one more row of border blocks across the bottom.  The border blocks are 9" x 10.5" so the corners will be 10.5" square.

I have placed 2 9" squares up there to test ideas for the corners.  I have several 9 patch blocks left over and they would need 2 coping strips or a narrow border all around if I use them.  At the right corner is a fabric I didn't end up using in the center but I had ...

Back to purple Rosy................ from Exuberant Color

The left column is all border blocks.  I finished sewing the last batches of them last night.  I just need to decide now if I like the position of each of them.  Next I need to move all of the blocks 9" to the left so I can work on the right border.

l have enough blocks made for the remaining 3 borders.  Last thing is deciding what I will put at the 4 corners.

We are back to normal weather for this date now, mid 40s to low 50s and mid to high 30s at night.  It was nice ...

Unpressed progress.................... from Exuberant Color

I'm working on the border blocks for the purple Rosy and I can't press them until I know where they will end up on the quilt.  That is, if I want seams to nest, which I do.  There are 4 of each of these as well as 4 of the one I showed previously.

This is how they fit along the center of the quilt.  I have the larger squares all up on the wall and need to piece more of the sections of 6 smaller squares and sew them to the large square sections.  It is the ...

Back to purple Rosy................. from Exuberant Color

I was checking out all of the pieces for the last 2 borders on the Rosy quilt.  It will be pieced in sections of 3 squares.  The pieced strips were left over from making the 9 patches.

I got 15 segments out of the pieced strips so now I just need to add one square to each of them for 15 border strips. I will need 48 of them plus corner units (not figured out yet).  I have some leftover 9 patches which I could add a small border to, to fit the corners.  I'm not sure how that ...

Working on the border................... from Exuberant Color

On the left side is one row of 4.5" squares and a little patch of 3" squares, the components of the pieced border.  I need to move all of the blocks to the left to have room for both the left and right borders on the design wall.  I ended up grocery shopping and doing laundry instead of continuing to work on this.

The 4.5" squares were all sewn into sets of 2 to speed up the design process.

The tree across the street was glowing with the sun from the south beating down on it, but no ...

Finish # 2 for October 2025.................. from Exuberant Color

This older quilt is finally finished.  It was started in 2011 so it is 14 years old.  The border was added in 2022 and then it hung on a hanger while I agonized about what kind of quilting and what color thread it needed.

There are 2 fabrics on the back, a wide piece of orange with roses and a narrow strip of the other fabric.  I love the Folk Art by Kaffe Fassett for the binding.

It is 47.5" x 58.5".  I used Hobbs 80/20 batting and the quilting thread color is Almond, which blends into ...

Layout 2.................... from Exuberant Color

I took out the square that was too light in this purple Rosy quilt and cut another of the second lightest fabric.  I decided to try them evenly placed down the center.  Then I cut 2 more squares of "dream" fabric and placed them evenly around the center.  I usually use a random layout but I was having a hard time coming up with anything I liked.  I'll let this one simmer for a day or two.

Last night I counted the squares that will make up the 2 borders.  I only need 3 more of the 4.5 ...

Need to work on............. from Exuberant Color

At the end of 2019 I did some machine embroidery, redwork children on Kona snow fabric.  I have been thinking about the quilt I need to make and have gone back and forth between a pieced sashing or an alternating block.

Meanwhile I have been collecting fabrics to use in the quilt.  This will be a priority project for me so I need to come to a decision on the design soon.

Yesterday was a family day spending time with my east coast family, meeting my grandson's new wife for the first time.  We were joined by some local ...

Finish #4 for August 2024 from Exuberant Color

This quilt is tricky to photograph.  If I use auto adjust in my editing program, it gives the pinks a blue cast so I didn't use it.

I don't feel the necessity to name every quilt but I have to have something to call it when I refer to it.  This one has just been Hearts and 4 Patches so far.  It has Hobbs 80/20 batting in it and it is 59" x 76".

I bought a couple big yardage pieces of pink prints for backings at a good sale price and this butterfly print is one ...

Binding time.......... from Exuberant Color

I have gotten into the habit of getting the quilts trimmed and bound shortly after they are quilted.  I looked for binding choices for this pink quilt and found 4 stripes as well as the leftover backing with butterflies.  The one on the right is too pale, second from right is used in the piecing and is at the edge of the quilt in a couple places so they are both out of contention.

I finally decided I liked the dark pink stripe because it echoes the darker pinks in the quilt so it doesn't look so pastel.

Then ...

Finish #2 for July 2024............ from Exuberant Color

Now that I have my 2 finishes for the month I can sit back and do nothing for the rest of the month.... wait...I don't know how to do that.  I need to be busy.

I made the quilt top in November 2023 so this one didn't wait too long to be quilted (by longarm friend Robin).  I did the binding all by machine which speeded up the finish.

Looking back at previous posts when I was making the top, there are at least 77 different Kaffe collective fabric in it, and 2 squares of most of ...

How about some red for Valentine's Day................. from Exuberant Color

I got the flannel quilt sewn together but didn't turn on the iron so I'll just talk about red today.  I went through my archives looking for finished red quilts and came up with this assortment.  My daughter owns the one on the bottom left and so far I still own the others.

This group is all quilt tops.  I sold the three on the left.  The one on the right will probably be finished soon.  I have the perfect backing fabric for it.

I think of these as mostly red.  The two on the upper right are ...

Racing to the end with 2............ from Exuberant Color

I started working early yesterday and got all of the top row blocks sewn.  I also have all of the 3.5" squares chosen for the bottom row.  I think I'm going to go ahead and sew this now and I'll add the bottom row to it when I get it finished.

I sewed the binding onto this small soft colorwash last night (only a portion of it is shown here).  I have had the quilting done for several weeks but couldn't decide which edge was the top and couldn't decide between a facing and a ...

Border blocks................ from Exuberant Color

The big fold up section at the back of my sewing cabinet is covered with green goodness.

I continued to design the border blocks with 2 sizes of squares and got all 20 blocks for the 2 sides of the quilt sewn last night.

Now I need to design and sew the 7 blocks for the top and 7 blocks for the bottom and figure out how I'm going to make the 4 corner blocks.  I also need to decide if the center blocks are in their final arrangement.

I cut the binding for a wallhanging that is already ...

Playing with green.................. from Exuberant Color

There will be about 76 of the 3.5" squares and around 228 of the 2.5" squares to form the border on the green Rosy quilt.

There were a few candidates for the smaller squares in the 2.5" strips box.

I really didn't get much accomplished yesterday, kind of a transition day from the super busy days to normal days.  I put enough of the new squares that I cut up on the wall to see I need some blue and a few darker green for some value contrast.  Because I am going to sew the border ...
