Scrappy Stuff from Life In Pieces

There's not been a Rainbow Scrap Challenge post on my blog since last March!  I knew there hadn't been many this year, but none in almost 6 months?  When I think about it, there are a few obvious reasons.  Both my personal and my professional schedules have been a bit nuts this year.  I don't have as much time to draft blog posts, I've chosen to stitch rather than get photos together and write.  Plus this year's RSC project, Wild and Goosey, isn't coming together very quickly.  Those little blocks take a while to ...

Rainbow Scrap Challenge: Slow Progress from Life In Pieces

It's been slow going on this year's scrappy project.  I've wanted to make a version of Bonnie Hunter's Wild and Goosey since I first saw it.  It seemed like a good scrappy project.  It is, but those little blocks aren't a quick assembly.  So my progress on each month's color for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge has been pretty underwhelming.  But as it's the last Saturday in the first quarter of 2019, it seemed like a good time to report on the progress so far.

For March, there's one green block finished.

The ...

Monday Motivation: Good Fortune Mystery Quilt from Patchwork Sampler Blog

Probably every quilter on the planet knows that Bonnie Hunter from Quiltville hosts a free mystery quilt every year starting on Black Friday. The 2018 mystery was the Good Fortune Quilt. Since we host Thanksgiving, I usually don’t participate. This year, I jumped in but didn’t keep up. The quilt was revealed around the first of the year, but I was nowhere near ready to put it together. In fact, it wasn’t until this past weekend, I pulled the parts out and made the center blocks.

I put them up on the design wall this morning and ...

Rainbow Scrap Challenge - Radiant Red Stitching from Life In Pieces

What a week!  The first full week of work after the holidays is always rough for some reason.  It was nice to get home last night and head to the sewing room for some in depth stitching therapy.   I was in the mood for some mindless stitching, this year's Rainbow Scrap Project seemed to be just the thing to work on.

I was able to finish off the first two blocks last night.

 Modified Wild and Goosey
Based on Bonnie Hunter's pattern in Addicted to Scraps

These blocks are 3.5" squares, that's relatively tiny for me ...

Rainbow Scrap Challenge: Squared Away Isn't Yet from Life In Pieces

Weekends are so very necessary.  I was certainly glad to see Friday roll around this week.  It's performance review season at work.  We had a compressed schedule this year, two weeks to meet with personnel, complete performance summaries and write feedback.  The deadline was the 31st, I didn't get to bed till early morning on the first of November.  I'm so glad that's over for another year!

Consequently, there hasn't been a great deal of stitching this week.  I'm still working on getting the final borders on the Inverted Star quilt.  However, the last ...

Rainbow Scrap Challenge - Playing with Colors from Life In Pieces

It's Fall Break in our neck of the woods this week.  The Scientist in Training is home for the long weekend.  I expect she'll sleep in this morning as she didn't get the chance to yesterday as her car had to go in for service.  That meant an early departure for Tulsa yesterday morning. But she got some shopping and cheesecake out of that deal.  While she's sleeping in, I'm hoping to get caught up on email and my blog reading before heading out to the local quilt shop for the second Christmas Mystery Quilt ...

Sewing, Sewing, Sewing.... from Pamela Quilts

What a week!  I've been keeping the pedal to the metal this week and have churned out an amazing lot of progress - but no finishes this week.

I've got all the blocks finished for the Brothers and Sisters quilt and am working at the border units.  Only 190 rectangles that have a sew and flip triangle on each end.  I do a bunch, then trim and press.  Those will probably keep me busy all week long.

Plus I tackled the mountain of scraps that have been building up!

That's a pretty impressive mound of blocks I've ...

Izzy Squared- baby quilt from Moda Lissa

The fun of making scrap quilts is that I sew bits and pieces together and let the plan develop as I go. I always ask my quilting friends, “Do you cut out the entire quilt before you get started, or do you cut some pieces and test your color choices before you cut the entire quilt?”

I think I have always done the latter and maybe that is because of my love of scraps quilts.

And because of this I often have some leftovers in quilting, not in cooking. I added more squares and had enough pieces from my Izzy ...

Rainbow Scrap Challenge: The Dark Side from Life In Pieces

It's been cold, wet and rainy much of this week.  Autumn has definitely made it's appearance.  On the one hand it's nice, there is more reason to spend time in the sewing room. On the other, the earlier sunset seems to sap my energy to do anything.

I did find the energy last week to finish off September's dark neutral blocks for the Squared Away Sampler.

 Squared Away Sampler
designed by Mari (The Academic Quilter) and Angela (Soscrappy)

I changed up the blocks just a bit from Angela's and Mari's version.  This block would ...

Rainbow Scrap Challenge - Dark Neutrals and a Switch-Up from Life In Pieces

We were definitely ready for the weekend.  It was a long work week for both me and My Guy.  No better way to kick off the weekend then a marathon sewing session on Friday night. My main goal was to finish off my Halloween mystery blocks and make some head way on my Squared Away blocks for this year's Rainbow Scrap Challenge Sampler.  It's the middle of the month already and there hasn't been a lot of progress on those blocks yet.

I've really enjoyed working on the Squared Away sampler this year. Mari and Angela ...

Rainbow Scrap Challenge - Orange is a Wrap from Life In Pieces

I am ready for a weekend, it was a really long week.  I need to catch up on a few work things, but I'll wait for tomorrow for that. My brain needs a bit of a rest from budgets and emails.

I got an early start on my mental health treatments for the weekend by heading to my sewing room right after dinner.  I wanted to finish off the orange Squared Away blocks as this is the last weekend in August.

Ugly Is As Ugly Does from Mountain Quiltworks

In July our quilt guild had a swap of sorts. Everyone brought a half yard of the ugliest fabric in their stash. All fabrics were placed in a paper sack, and then we closed our eyes and  each drew one out. With our new ugly fabric, the task was to create a table runner using the fabric as a main focal point in the runner. At this juncture, many people liked the fabric they drew. But not me! Mine

Rainbow Scrap Challenge: All Caught Up from Life In Pieces

I'm declaring today a NBS day (nothing but sewing, a term borrowed from Barbara who blogs over at Cat Patches).  Work has been rough with project deadlines, instrument failures, and changes in direction/programs.  A day of stitching therapy to fortify myself for next week is sorely needed.

As far as Rainbow Scrap Sewing goes, I'm all caught up on the Squared Away blocks.

The reds look a little dull in the photograph, but they are actually very vibrant up on the design wall.  Maybe I ...

Rainbow Scrap Challenge Teal and Red from Life In Pieces

It was a long work week, I'm definitely ready for a weekend and some stitching time.  The forecast says we've had a cold front come through so our highs this weekend will be in the mid to upper 90F range (around 35C).  That's down a bit from the high of 99F we had yesterday.  Still it's too warm to do much other than seek refuge in my nicely air conditioned sewing room this afternoon.

It was a pretty productive week for this year's Rainbow Scrap Challenge project, the Squared Away Sampler.  All the teal blocks ...

Rainbow Scrap Challenge Sampler Progress from Life In Pieces

We took off the first half of last week, which made for a very short work week and really messed up my ability to know which day it was.  Thursday really felt like a Monday, and just a day later it's Saturday.  I could get used to that kind of schedule!

There was one day of stitching in the time off.  I used that opportunity to get caught up with the Rainbow Scrap Challenge Sampler Blocks.  Since we've just passed the half way mark for the year, I put the finished Squared Away blocks up on the design ...

Getting back into the Groove from Pamela Quilts

After a couple months of having our normal routines completely disrupted, my husband and I are both struggling with getting back into our groove.  We have managed to resume our daily walk and exercise, which is a good thing!  I made a couple of fun string blocks and am working on getting that scrap basket back down to a decent level.

I even found pieces of an unfinished quilt block!

Blockheads block number two is done - I'll do the third block a bit later today so I can stay caught up with that!

Prepping for pageant week!  The blue ...

Stitching Scrappy Stars from Life In Pieces

Happy Saturday!  This week really seemed to drag, I'm glad to have finally made it to the weekend. I'm definitely ready for some sewing room therapy. So it's good that I found a few workarounds to cope with the power problem.  Tuesday morning we had a very severe thunderstorm roll through our area.  It took out a lot of trees and damaged some roofs.  According to co-workers the lightening took out a few TVs and computer routers.  It also took out one of our cable boxes and the power to all the electrical outlets in my  sewing ...

Rainbow Scrap Challenge: Not in the Pink Yet from Life In Pieces

My Mother's Day started on Thursday this week.  We moved the Scientist In Training (and her BFF) out of their dorm rooms.  Then the SIT and I took off for a very short girls weekend with my mom and sister.  There's been a shopping expedition, lots of eating out and a boatload of laughter so far.  This morning the plan is for Krispy Kreme, a quilt shop excursion and then lunch. The SIT and I will head home after that.

So there's not been a lot of stitching this week as I've been sleeping in hotel ...

Rainbow Scrap Challenge: A Spot of Sunshine from Life In Pieces

Even with another day off, it seems like weekends go way to fast.  We took yesterday off to run a few errands, in particular to renew our drivers license.  Somewhere in the chaos of extra work stuff and around the house stuff, we completely forgot that's one reason we took off.  Thankfully, I remembered right a 4 PM, so rather than a coffee date we ended up standing in line at the tag agency.  Whew, at least that's done and we don't have to worry about it for 4 years.

There was a bit of sewing interspersed ...
