Binding............. from Exuberant Color

I didn't look any farther; I liked one of the binding choices in the first round.  I got it sewn on and have started the hand stitching.  The hanging sleeve is sewn on too.

This is the orientation of the other colorwash as I designed it.

When my daughter was here we tried it horizontally and thought maybe that was a better choice for art over a piece of furniture.

I put the leftover piece of backing fabric there to analyze whether it might be a good binding choice.

I flipped it 180 degrees to see if I like ...

Quilting on two............ from Exuberant Color

The top of my sewing cabinet was finally cleaned off and I quilted both of these colorwash quilts yesterday.  Today I will choose bindings and prepare hanging sleeves.

While I was sitting at my computer a little after 5 p.m. I noticed the tree a little farther north of me glowing in the sunlight.  When I saw the color of the partially dead tree next to it I figured it is the golden hour.

Here is another view while the sun was hitting it and just a short time later after the sun had gone down behind the houses ...

Cool colors............ from Exuberant Color

I am drawn to the warm colors more often so I thought it was time to make a cool color Kaffe Collective quilt.  I may add other fabrics if necessary.  I have already made the Seed Packet quilt from one of Kaffe's books and there is another quilt with fussy cut flowers in his "Themes" hard cover book.  It will probably take me a month to fussy cut all of the pieces I will need for both quilts.  I think the majority of flower fabrics will be blue with green and purple added in.

I visited my 2 great-grandsons ...

It was an outside day............. from Exuberant Color

There haven't been too many perfect days to work outside in the last month.  It was either close to 90 or in the 50s.  Yesterday was perfect so I did over 3 hours of digging and planting and finally pulling weeds.  Also I finished the mowing in the side and back yards.

I dug out 2 big Hostas in the front garden, ones that got too much sun and didn't look great for half of the summer.  I pulled off a few sections from one of them and then planted the 2 big plants in pots for the ...

Sorting, planting.......... from Exuberant Color

The 6.5" Kaffe fabric squares have been sorted by color.  There are several of some of the prints and only one of others.  The middle row is blue, green, purple and brown and the whole top row is red, orange and pink.  I'm not sure when I cut some of these because I have just been putting them in a little storage box for several years.  There are a few Martha Negley fabrics in there too.

When the sun came out in mid afternoon yesterday I went out and dug the hole and planted the scrawny sale Hydrangea ...

Making a few flying geese............. from Exuberant Color

In my sorting I found a stack of 52 Australian fabric Flying Geese blocks.  There were 8 more goose pieces cut so I sewed 8 more for a total of 60.  I looked back on my blog and found that I had started sewing these in April this year when I was cleaning up from my series of quilts with the Australian fabrics.

There are still more half square triangles on this tray so I need to cut some more goose shapes (quarter square triangle).  Some of these are dark so that means I need light color geese.  I have ...

First quilt top for October................. from Exuberant Color

I was hoping to have this top done in September but after I squeezed in the 65th high school class reunion I could see it wasn't going to happen.  Now I have a great start for October.

This is made of African fabrics and mottled batik (almost solid) fabrics.

I intended to find an African fabric for some alternate plain blocks but instead looked on my 2 shelves of multicolor batiks.  I know I got this batik on sale, deep discount, because it wasn't selling well.  I only had a yard so I got twenty 8.5" squares ...

Fall Fun from Quilt Paint Create

I had some time off work recently, and we used the opportunity to take a break from the everyday.

We always like a scenic view.

And seeing bears has been on our bucket list for many years.

I can understand how they can become a nuisance though after they raided the garbage multiple times and made quite a mess.

I also made a lot of progress on the afghan and some progress on my fall stitch. I might even mess around and finish that afghan in the next couple weeks. I’m enjoyed the time to work on my hand ...

Flying Geese are sewn on............ from Exuberant Color

I finally took the pieces off the design wall and got it all sewn together.  The geese border fit perfectly with the half goose beginning the border both top and bottom.  I like it just as it is and could just quilt and bind it but it is only 40" x 56" so I need to keep adding to it.  It would only work as a wallhanging right now.

While the iron was hot I pressed the newest batch of strip piecing for the other African fabric quilt.  I got them all cut and sewed one of each combination.  Now ...

Lots of strip piecing....... from Exuberant Color

Lots of African fabric strips were cut yesterday and all but 4 were paired with mottled batiks.  I got 11 sets sewn last night.  That will make 22 blocks.

It's nice to be working on two quilts at the same time.  I can gaze up at the one on the design wall while sewing for the other quilt.

I decided to cut a Flying Geese block in half and put half onto one end of each of the borders.  I sewed them on and now need to sew on the 2 burgundy strips first, then the Flying Geese borders ...

Flying Geese borders............ from Exuberant Color

Last night I sewed the Flying Geese borders.  The pieced top is 40" and the Flying Geese borders are 39".  I have 3 solutions so far, a narrow spacer at each end, a spacer at just one end, or a partial Flying Geese block since I have a few of them left over and I could cut one in half and use half on each border.

I also made the 4 new 16 patch blocks with the African fabric and mottled batiks.  I have the 18 duplicates ready to sew if I don't make any progress on anything else ...

No sewing............... from Exuberant Color

I have kept these Petunias alive, not all of the others have survived.

Yesterday was an everything but sewing day.  I did pet some fabric but best laid plans didn't work out.

In the morning I baked a batch of cookies and picked up the clutter in the living room.  Afternoon, mailed a package, picked tomatoes and spent an hour pulling weeds in the back garden again.  I must have done something else but I sure can't remember what.

Today I plan on doing some die cutting.  It's supposed to get up to 90 but low humidity ...

August 2023 Monthly recap............ from Exuberant Color

In some summers I spend more time gardening but as I get older, and perennials really do take care of themselves, I have gotten more quilting done this year.  I'm still up to date on 2 finishes a month so this is numbers 15 and 16.

The Australian Hole in the Barn Door/Churn Dash top was made in March this year.  After quilting it is 54" x 80.5".  The Pastel Diamonds top was made in May this year.  After quilting it is 48" x 72".

The I Spy #1 quilt top is number 20 this year.  I ...

Exploring stash............ from Exuberant Color

I need to get the I Spy quilt top off the design wall so I looked for possible border fabrics.  I started with black and white prints but they looked so cold and drab.  Then I spied this paper clip print.  I wonder if kids know what a paper clip is.  I have 3 yards of it so I can cut the borders on the lengthwise grain and the leftover will become part of a backing on another quilt.  I want to put flannel on the back of this one.

I usually preorder a few of the new Kaffe Collective ...

More prep work........... from Exuberant Color

The first project of the day was to find a backing fabric for a colorwash wallhanging.  i looked through 2 stacks of multicolor batiks and decided on this one.

Next I cut 2 more batting pieces for quilts that are next in line.

From my kitchen window I could see some orange flowers that were taller than the Brown Eyed Susans and had to go out and investigate.  There are 3 Cosmos that came up from seed.  This is the same location where the Four o'clocks were but I don't see any of them this year.

I think ...

Batting day............. from Exuberant Color

Yesterday was the day to open the new roll of batting.  I need to cut for several quilts.

This is what 30 yards looks like.  I cut pieces for three quilts and it still looks this big.  It comes wrapped tightly in plastic and starts expanding when I cut that away.  I like batting on the roll because there are no wrinkles to deal with like in packaged batting.  This roll is really soft batting (80/20 Hobbs).  Every roll isn't identical because I only order it every 14 months.  I have only gotten one roll that wasn't ...

Assembly done, not pressed................ from Exuberant Color

There were 2 sewing sessions yesterday and I got the I Spy quilt top sewn together.  It was 10 p.m. when I took the last stitch so I saved the pressing for today.

I was out watering gardens early yesterday morning.  The Zinfin Doll Hydrangea is changing color rather quickly this year.  I wish I had a place for a whole row of these.

The little 4" tall Coneflower is in full bloom now.  I think it should be moved to a safer location but I'm not sure it would survive a move.  Indecision here.

The yellow Nasturtium ...

Final layout for I Spy............ from Exuberant Color

The only thing I had to decide was where the red/orange/hot pink I Spy prints would be.  I could have just sewn this together without a layout ahead of time but I didn't want those colors clumped together in one area.

Good news!  My tomatoes are finally turning red.  There are about 5 more that probably can be picked today.

Yesterday got up to 90 with a feel like temperature of 103 at 2 p.m. yesterday.  Today is supposed to be a few degrees cooler but still high humidity and then back to mid to high ...

22 out of 63................ from Exuberant Color

All of these blocks need pressing so this isn't a final layout start.  I just keep putting them up on the wall to clear space on my sewing cabinet.  I changed my mind on this quilt and the new size will be 56" x 72".  I may put a border on it.  I'm a third of the way through sewing the blocks.

I showed this tiny yellow plant before.  It came up earlier in the summer and something came along and had it for lunch.  It was stubborn and sent up some new leaves and a teeny tiny ...

Garden yesterday........... from Exuberant Color

Most of the Hosta flowers are kind ho-hum but this is the prettiest one in the back garden.  It is a little past prime because we had rain yesterday morning, .45" for the second time this week.

I only have one Hosta that has fragrant blooms.  They look almost like lilies when they are in full bloom.  This is the first one to set buds.

Finally I have some tomatoes turning color.  These are the Big Boys and I have 5 Early Girls along the driveway that are turning red.

I did a little hand basting and sewed some of ...
