I don't get much done in the mornings. It is my computer time, when I clean up the kitchen from the night before, and other things around the house. I planned on basting another baby quilt in the afternoon. After lunch I knew I had to take my van for a ride to keep the battery charged so I went to W*lm*rt. For 2 weeks in a row they didn't have any big bags of frozen strawberries. I use them in my morning smoothie. Shortly after I got home my son came by. But first I ... read more

Cutting and sewing of the sashing and border went smoothly on this table runner top made with Marcia Derse fabric. It is 15" x 40" right now. I'm contemplating how I'll quilt it now and I may put that off until after Christmas.
After I finished working on that I pieced a batting for the next baby quilt that I will finish.
I bought these 3 glass trees with interior lights last year. They have a timer for 6 hours on. The tall one looks tipped but that's my fault for taking the photo at that angle ... read more
It was time to clean off a couple table tops yesterday so I didn't get to the studio until evening. First up was trimming the Marcia Derse crazy pieced blocks.
The largest size I could trim to was 11.5".
They will be made into a table runner and this is the white with black Marcia Derse fabric that will border them. I have a visitor coming today and PT tomorrow but there will be several hours to continue doing clean up and to work on this table runner. I'm ready for a couple relaxing days. read more
The quilting wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be. The story behind this is that the 4 star blocks were a little too large for the flying geese strips added around them. That means I did a lot of easing and stretching and the center didn't lay as flat as most of my quilts. I tamed it pretty well with only one little tuck. I named this one Game Board.
I'm glad I used the fun fish fabric on the back. The fabrics are Kaffe collective. It is 39" square and was quilted on my ... read more
I added some more pieces to 3 of the Marcia Derse fabric crazy piecing blocks. I'm testing whether I want white with black fabrics added. I have at least 3 other prints I can try.
Occasionally I pull out the parts department boxes and check out some of the pieces. These are from the 4" Kaffe fabric box. They are now safely back in the box.
I finished this dishcloth on Sunday night. I now have 3 in this coloration done and want to make 3 more.
I started two more dishcloths last night. The bottom one is blue ... read more
There is nothing better than an all day sewing day. It was too cold to go anywhere.
This top is finally finished other than a little trimming of the bottom edge. It ended up at 49.5" x 71". There are 2 Martha Negley fabrics in it and the rest are all Kaffe Fassett Collective.
I determined a final layout and got this flannel baby quilt top sewn together too. When I was putting the blocks up on the design wall, I realized the bottom left block was shorter than the rest. Evidently 2 of the light strips were 1 ... read more
For binding, something in gray, taupe or black was going to look best with the back of this quilt. I still had enough of this black and taupe Marcia Derse print to cut the 9 strips of binding.
I did the binding all by machine. I used a dark taupe thread to topstitch the binding. I didn't want to struggle seeing black thread. This quilt is big, too big for me to get it up on the double design wall right now. If you want to see the whole top, this post shows it.
I was happy to see ...
read moreI had to do a load of laundry yesterday because I was running out of clean essentials. While I was in the basement I trimmed the huge Marcia Derse 16 patch quilt.
I had 6 yards of this large Marcia Derse print so I used it on the back. I bought the two 3 yard pieces at different times and possibly from 2 different stores. When I went to match the backing seam, I realized that one of them had slightly smaller motifs so by the time I got to the bottom of the seam they were a little off ... read more
I got the 2 halves of this Marcia Derse fabric 16 patch quilt top pressed and sewed the final seam. After pressing that seam I struggled to get it up on the double design wall. I reached as high as I could but the last few inches still ended up on the floor. I had to hang it sideways and rotated the photo. The part on the floor is on the right edge. It is 80" x 96", large enough for an oversize twin quilt. With the deep mattresses on the new beds we need to make bed quilts larger ... read more
It's a little hard to see the border since it wants to blend into the white flannel on the design wall. This quilt has only 7 Martha Negley fabrics in the quilt top. It is 67" x 83.5". The binding is the same light fabric as the quarter square triangles in every block and the border. It has Hobbs 80/20 batting in it and was quilted by Robin Diaz.
The back is also a Martha Negley fabric, the same print in lavender as was in pink in the front of the quilt. I didn't have enough ... read more
I decided to wash my bathroom curtains yesterday and when trying to slide them off the tension rod, they tore all the way down the side, sun rot. I checked back on my blog and those curtains were made 10 1/2 years ago. They were so faded they didn't look anything like when they were new.
Here is a close up of the new fabric. I bought it several years ago on sale. It is an Alex Anderson design for P&B fabrics. It is so much heavier weight than most new fabrics are. It only took about ... read more
Just to recap, I have 2 blocks alike of each of 50 Marcia Derse fabric combinations. Yesterday I took 1/2 of the blocks, one of each combination and the 10 squares cut from the Marcia Derse panel, downstairs to the double design wall. I forgot to take a photo and brought the blocks upstairs to sew. I have half of the quilt sewn now, 10 blocks wide (80") and 6 blocks tall (48"). I can put the other half of the blocks in the very same arrangement and sew the 2 halves together. I could also take column 10 ... read more
If you read yesterday's post, you know I miscut a strip and was short one segment for a 16 patch block. I briefly thought about just forgetting about that block, but I'm going for 120 blocks so I really needed it. I don't like chunks cut out of my yardage. I guess that is a leftover feeling from having worked at quilt shops and always having a clean edge on yardage. I cut 2 squares out of each of the 2 fabrics and finished piecing the block.
I finished another dishcloth last night. It is not as ... read more
I sewed 8 new combinations of Marcia Derse fabric yesterday morning. There are 2 of each, so 16 new blocks.
I sewed and cut the next batch of stratas and when cutting into segments I made one miscut. There is exactly enough for 2 blocks with only a small cut leftover.
I was able to salvage all but one combination by sewing the left over piece onto the miscut piece and recutting into 2.5". On the left, the seam sewn, center, the seam pressed open, and right, a trimmed strip ready to use. The 6th strata didn't have ... read more
I have several quilt tops in progress, at all different stages, and I'm not sure any of them will be a finished top for this month.
Yesterday I decided to work on the Marcia Derse 16 patch and have this group ready to slice into segments to make blocks.
I pressed more fabric and cut more strips and got pairs sewn together.
I had PT in the morning instead of afternoon yesterday. It is helping my sciatic problems but it's still undetermined if there is another problem in my lower back. I have gone to 6 of 10 ...
read moreI had the binding sewn onto the flannel baby quilt before lunch time yesterday. I need to take some blocks off the design wall before I can take its full portrait.
These are the blocks that need to be removed from the design wall. I added the 4 new ones so I could take a photo of all 36 blocks (one of each combination of fabrics, two alike of each are sewn). This wasn't necessarily the final layout but I have a photo of it now if I do want to start with this when I get the rest ... read more
This flannel quilt has been ready for quilting for a couple weeks so I finally quilted it yesterday. It will get trimmed today or tomorrow and then I'll look for binding.
I pressed the stratas yesterday and sliced off the segments for 8 blocks, 2 of each combination. They aren't pressed so they can't go up on the design wall yet. I have 72 blocks made now. That would give me an 8 x 9 layout but that is too close to square. I would rather have 7 x 11 or 8 x 10. I could still ... read more
I spent a couple more hours cutting 2" squares of Kaffe collective fabrics yesterday morning and now have 5 stacks instead of 3 shown a couple days ago. I had PT in the afternoon and afterwards sewed 4 more stratas of Marcia Derse fabrics for the 16 patch quilt. I trimmed off sad looking branches on my tomato plants and pulled out some more of the Creeping Bellflower.
I know there is nothing exciting about showing the most recent dishcloth finish but this helps me keep a record of the colors I have used.
7 days of 90s now, and ...
read moreI think it is going to be impossible to get a true contrast photo of these blocks. The camera wants to emphasize the light/dark contrast and in reality, it is much more blendy, closer to yesterday's photo. This is one of each of the 32 unique blocks, so there are 64 completed at this time.
Here are the 6 new combinations (daylight photo).
The tallest volunteer Sunflower is a full bloom now. I see I didn't catch it before a bug ate holes in one of the petals. This one is about 4 feet tall.

I think this photo is a little dark, but this 16 patch is definitely a moody group of fabrics. I just put one of each that are sewn on the wall temporarily. I have chosen 12 more fabrics to cut and they are lighter than a lot of these.
I chose 4 of the new fabrics and sewed them but they aren't pressed so they aren't on the wall with the rest of the blocks.
I went out after sunset to take this photo. I kept meaning to go out earlier. This is the first of the Tiger ... read more
