Red and White Log Jam 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 from Virtual Quilter

That could almost be a pretty flower!

Interesting design above.

Crisscross design is also interesting!

Designs in this project file would be great for sports fans who barrack for the red and white teams.

My favourite for this week’s quilter’s is the first design above.

More Log Cabin design variations mid week, next week, so you can have a five minute coffee break looking at some quilt designs.

Cabin Fever Isolation Area 61, 62, 63, 64, 65 from Virtual Quilter

Love the first design this week.

There are four colourways of the TNT Log Cabin block in this project file, and there are over 500 quilt designs. I suspect that there are some repeats, but I have not been able to find any.

Interesting!

I like the one above.

I can see five spaces which could be filled with some interesting quilting, or some applique could be added before the quilting.

That is all for this weeks Log Cabin retreat, but there will be more Log Cabin designs mid week, next week.

TNT Logs + 106, 107, 108, 109, 110 from Virtual Quilter

This week’s selection of designs includes three very similar designs with minor changes, and two also with minor changes.

The dark circle in the centre has become a light space.

The dark centre is back, but the inner corners have changed.

The one above is interesting.

Four blocks have changed colour in the last.

That is all for this week, and last, but more Log Cabin designs mid week, next week, if I remember what day it is. Easy to tell we are retirees, where every day is Sunday!

Hexie Logs 36, 37, 38, 39, 40 from Virtual Quilter

The Log Cabin block usually starts with a square, but can also start with a rectangle, a triangle, and a hexagon. Starting with an octagon might be a step too far, but is possible!

Different and very unusual!

The appliques could be done on plain blocks, or pieced blocks using low contrast fabrics for each round.

The one above is my favourite so far …

… but the last one finishes first in the favourite ratings from me!

The gallery is a bit crowded today!

Cabin Fever 131, 132, 133, 134, 135 from Virtual Quilter

I like the first design for this week’s mini retreat.

Second is very interesting. The blocks in the centre could be changed many ways inside the dark frame.

I am not impressed by the third design … too busy.

Much more interesting.

Love the last for this week.

If ever I run out of interesting things to do it would be interesting to go through this project file using a mixture of colours, particularly in the centre area of the designs. It would need to be a long break from the ...

Beetaloo Logs 26, 27, 28, 29, 30 from Virtual Quilter

One hundred and forty four identical blocks, …

twist a few around for a new design, …

then turn them all inside out for another design …

repeat over …

and over.

This project file could go on forever, but I like more block variety.

Oh, dear! I only turned one block half way round in the fourth design, and so the same mistake appears twice!

Applique Logs 96, 97, 98, 99, 100 from Virtual Quilter

Lots of piecing, followed by lots of applique.

Love the design above.

I haven’t opened this project file for years, and the fabrics are dated, but I learned early on as a quilter that the colours don’t really matter if the contrast works. The contrast in this file isn’t perfect either, but the design is appealing despite that.

Sort of turned the design of the centre inside out and I still love it.

The four extra blocks with applique make it an even better design. I have decided not to spend hours changing the fabric choices in ...

Curved Cornerstones 71, 72, 73, 74, 75 from Virtual Quilter

Interesting. Very neat.

Wow! Anything but neat!

Small change, but it seems to be neater than the previous one.

A bit neater and tidier.

Different!

Log Cabin 56, 57, 58, 59, 60 from Virtual Quilter

The Log Cabin project file was one of the early files I opened just for this blog.

I am still amazed at the number of designs I found over 15 years ago, though I am not very impressed with the colour choices I made back then. My thinking was that not too many people would like the colouring enough to steal the designs and claim them as their own. I have since played with the colours in some of the old files and made them more attractive but some of them have too many designs to sit and recolour.

I ...

Red and White Log Jam 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 from Virtual Quilter

Three different colorings of the basic Log Cabin block used in this project file, the half and half light and dark block, plus all light and all dark.

The first design has 16 all light, four all dark, the rest half and half.

The second has just four dark blocks.

Twelve dark, twelve light ….

… eight all dark.

Sixteen light and four dark in the last design.

Challenge for me … I have been avoiding having multi coloured blocks, but sometime between now and Christmas I will add green and white blocks to the red and white, all red and all white ...

TNT Logs 66, 67, 68, 69, 70 from Virtual Quilter

Sixty four identical blocks can be twisted and turned every which way to create a multitude of designs.

The second design has a few blocks twisted, but all of them have the light and dark sides opposite …

… but with the light and dark swapped back to the same as the first design.

Once again the dark colour is prominent, with a few blocks turned around …

… and with the light color prominent.

Logs on Point 76, 77, 78, 79. 80 from Virtual Quilter

Too much dark, though if it was on a bed a lot of the dark would be overhang or scrunched up at the bottom corners.

Interesting.

My first thought when I opened up this design, which has been locked away since it was created about five years ago is that it looks like something a computer programmer would use to illustrate some new program.

The blocks used in these designs include Log Cabin, Courthouse Steps and Curved Log Cabin (or Thick and Thin, TNT)

Christmas must be coming … I see bonbons in the last design in this weeks Log Cabin ...

Log Cabin + Dark 31, 32, 33, 34, 35 from Virtual Quilter

The + dark is a reference some of the Log Cabin blocks pieced from all dark fabrics, instead of the traditional light and dark combination.

Can you spot the difference between the first two designs? I had to look twice or three times to check that they were different!

The third one is obviously different … or it is the morning coffee is taking effect.

The design above would be my favourite for today, except that there are too many all dark blocks..

That’s better!

Log Cabin Mix 26, 27, 28, 29, 30 from Virtual Quilter

Not a bit mix up in the first design.

More mixed up in the second, which I like because it is less boring to make a mixture of blocks rather than 64 identical blocks.

Looks like a willy-willy (or whirlwind) touched down in the sewing room.

Love the design above!

The last one is almost boring after the fourth one!

Log Heap 56, 57, 58, 59, 60 from Virtual Quilter

I like it! Colours are not great, but the contrast is fine.

Reminds me of the things they put up and call wind farms.

My favourite for today is the one above.

Don’t know why I saved the design above, but perhaps it was because I thought I could spend some time playing with the corners to make the overall design more interesting.

If you enjoy quilting there is an opportunity to play in the big yellow space.

Log Cabin 51, 52, 53, 54, 55 from Virtual Quilter

I share a lot of Log Cabin variations, and this project file is the most basic of them all.

The same block repeated over and over again, twisted and turned to create different designs.

I love some of the very basic traditional layouts, but it is so easy to place a few blocks inside out to create something different.

Even if you use exactly the same fabrics as others to make the blocks, you can make your blocks into something different.

I like the last two most of this week’s Log Cabin designs.

Red and White Log Jam 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 from Virtual Quilter

A few all dark, or all red, blocks, the rest are standard Log Cabin blocks, and are all made using the standard pieced Log Cabin construction methods.

The second design has some all light, or white, Log Cabin blocks, and a totally different arrangement of the blocks.

The third one has quite a few all light/white, there are four dark/red blocks, and 40 light/dark combination blocks to create another totally different Log Cabin Quilt design.

The design above are all identical pieced Log Cabin blocks, but they have been twisted and turned to create something totally different ...

Log Cabin Blues 41, 42, 43, 44, 45 from Virtual Quilter

Interesting.

More interesting.

Very, very interesting. I like the change of colours too.

The centre looks like a white spider going around in circles!

Back to the softer colours, which when I first thought of it it seemed prettier, but now I think I should go back to the stronger colouring.

I am going to change the order to put them in the gallery so the darker ones are together, and bigger!

Cabin Fever 126, 127, 128, 129, 130 from Virtual Quilter

In today’s selection of Log Cabin variations I have used just five variations, and one of them has been used just four times in one design.

The changes are rather subtle, but interesting.

The changes could be used in real quilts when we run out of one of the fabrics, and in the one above have to find a totally different fabric to finish the quilt.

I think the design above is my favourite of today’s section.

I love seeing how small changes of blocks and their placement, and orientation, can change a design.

That is all for ...

Curved Cornerstones 66, 67, 68, 69, 70 from Virtual Quilter

Interesting, and I like interesting designs.

Interesting again, but it looks like a spider’s web and have no desire to sleep under one of them!

The third design still has a slightly webbed look about it, but I like it.

The fourth one is ok but what happens if I give it a twist …

… not what I was expecting, but I like it!

Hope you enjoyed this week’s mid week retreat, and there will be another one mid week, next week.
