Playing at the design wall................... from Exuberant Color

I have a box full of 2" x 4" Flying Geese blocks made with Kaffe and Martha Negley fabrics.  I tried a row flying all the same direction, and maybe because they are facing the opposite direction than the triangles in the center panel, I didn't like this.

I thought maybe going both directions might work.  I still needed to try some more ideas.

Two geese joined into a diamond shape is an improvement.  I wasn't sure how many I would need to go across the bottom.  The strip on the right isn't sewn on yet.

Since ...

First finish for October 2025................. from Exuberant Color

I love this little quilt.  I made blocks from my supply of cut Kaffe fabric strips and then hoped they would all work together at the design wall.  It's pretty simple, 1.5" and 2.5" strips sewn together to make the blocks.  Lots of the strips were cut 15-20 years ago so there are a lot of early Kaffe fabrics in this one.

The backing is a Brandon Mably fabric and the binding a Kaffe fabric.  I used Hobbs 80/20 batting in it and it finished at 47" x 67".

It was quilted by Robin Diaz.

The ...

3 quilt tops................... from Exuberant Color

I finally turned on the iron and got all three quilt tops pressed and measured.  Then I staystitched around the perimeter of this 16 patch made of Nancy Crow fabric.  This photo was taken with my Canon camera and is the closest to the real color.  My previous photos were too light.  This one is 64" x 80".

I am so happy these simple borders worked so effectively to make this medallion into a rectangular shape.  It is 61" x 81".  It is now a shape to cover a body.  No one will ever convince me that a 61" square ...

Borders, sewn top................... from Exuberant Color

Thanks to a friend I decided on borders on a medallion quilt made 9 years ago.  I was stuck at 61" square and wanted it to become rectangular.  The borders are sewn on the top and bottom.  Here is the top and the inspiration for it.

Last night I finished sewing the flannel tumbler quilt top.  Now I have 3 quilt tops to press so maybe I'll turn on the iron today.

A friend started blogging again so check her out.  She mentions me in this post from yesterday.

2 projects................. from Exuberant Color

Awhile back I showed the triangle panel and mentioned it was going to be the center of a medallion quilt, that I would be working on slowly.  I found the 6" snowball blocks in the Kaffe orphan block box (left over from this quilt top from 10 years ago) and they were on my design wall for at least 10 days while I tried to decide if they would be a border.  I said s.l.o.w.l.y, so I think I'm following my plan.  I sewed them together yesterday and sewed the border on.  Now I ...

This and that............... from Exuberant Color

The first day of every month is usually spent looking through things, attempting to clean off a table, just miscellaneous things.

I have had the 2 fabrics laying on my die cutter for over a week so I finally cut the pieces I needed for one more block.

I sewed the last block and then sewed this piece together.  It will be the center of a medallion quilt, to be designed slowly, a little at a time.  It is approximately 30" x 40" right now.

With those pieces off the design wall I could do the layout for these pinwheel ...

September 2025 Monthly recap.................... from Exuberant Color

Big and small, but 2 finishes anyway.  The 16 patch on the left is all Marcia Derse fabric, both front and back.  It is 78" x 95".  On the right, a double 4 patch, is Kaffe collective and Martha Negley fabric and is 40" x 59.5".

I only completed one top, and that's fine with me.  I'm gaining on finished vs. started.

This one is all Kaffe collective fabric.  I was trying to use up some green triangles which I had overcut for a previous project.  It was fun adding the Brandon Mably plaid in this one ...

Little decisions.......................... from Exuberant Color

From the remaining 4 contenders for backing, I chose the fish, mainly because its best use would be a backing.  The other 3 could be cut in smaller pieces for patchwork where the fish print is pretty large.

I'm getting ready to cut the purple Kaffe collective fabrics for the next Rosy quilt.  This is 4 fabrics stacked and I have decided on 3" finished squares for 9" nine patches.

While cleaning off a table I found 13 pinwheel blocks.  There are duplicates of some of them, 3 in each of 2 colors, 2 in each of 3 more ...

Still going through boxes and trying to organize........ from Exuberant Color

When I was in the basement going through things I found a stack of 4" Kaffe squares and some hourglass blocks.  I had this box in my main floor studio so I brought the blocks upstairs.  This box is 7" x 11" x 5.5" and it was quite full already.

Here is a peek inside.

I started pulling out piles to see what was in there.

Then I took everything our of the box and separated them by like sizes.  Curiosity got the best of me, so while I watched Antiques Roadshow I started counting pieces.  There are 189 ...

Flitting from one thing to the next................ from Exuberant Color

Instead of working on any project I decided to look for a back for this little 40" quilt top.  I only looked in the Brandon Mably stash (Kaffe collective).  Since this is 40" I can use one width of fabric for the back but I need more than 1 yard.  I did the "feel test" on the fabrics on the shelf.  I know what 1 yard feels like so I was feeling for a thicker fold.  My first run through produced these 5 fabrics.  The criteria is that it has to be a print that is not as effective cut ...

My lucky day..................... from Exuberant Color

I pulled this quilt top as the next to baste for ditch quilting.  I looked through my batiks for a possible backing.

My lucky day!  I found a large enough piece of the same fabric as the outer row of squares.  If I'm really careful, maybe I can get the binding out of it too.  Maybe.....

I have been pressing my purple Kaffe collective fabrics, preparing to cut pieces for the Rosy quilt.  This batch is potentially the large plain squares and possible some would be used in 9 patches too.

This group would be for the 9 patches ...

Nothing new............ from Exuberant Color

It was errand day which included grocery shopping yesterday.  When I got home I noticed a new flower in the front flower bed.  This is another volunteer plant and has just the one bloom.

Behind it is another plant with similar flowers.

This is the third volunteer plant, all grown from seeds from one plant last year.  These look more like coneflowers.  I tried to identify it back when the first plant bloomed and Gloriosa Daisy was one of the options.  They are from the Rudbeckia family.  I have more volunteer plants that haven't bloomed yet and I think ...

First finished quilt for September 2025.................. from Exuberant Color

This quilt was made from one of those boxes of blocks that I unearthed last year and which finally came to the top of the list for quilting.  If I remember right I had to make a couple blocks to be able to finish the top.  It's a small one, 40" x 59.5", so it was easy to quilt on my Pfaff.  The fabrics are Kaffe Fassett collective and Martha Negley. It has Hobbs 80/20 batting in it.

The backing is a fun print designed by Brandon Mably.  The binding is 4 different fabrics, 2 strips of ...

It's finished................. from Exuberant Color

I had 3 things on my list to do yesterday; one got done.  I'm not sure where all the rest of the hours went.

Since this double 4 patch quilt is so scrappy, I looked in the box of Kaffe 2.5" strips and chose 5 that looked okay together for the binding.  The twig stripe is a Martha Negley print and there are some MN prints in the quilt top.

I got it sewn on, finished last night.

Just another view of all 5 strips and front and back of the quilt.  I think it looks good.  I ...

First quilt top for September 2025........................ from Exuberant Color

The borders are on and looking at it now, I think it will need the white dotted fabric for binding.  At first I thought green.  This zig zag top measures 54" x 69".

With the quilt top finished, I quilted the table runner I started a couple days ago.  I used Invisafil WonderFil thread for the ditch quilting.

I used thread that matches the color of the zebras in the bobbin.

I have to find a binding for this table runner and for the quilt I finished yesterday and maybe get them cut and sewn on today.  Then I have ...

Quilted................ from Exuberant Color

The daylight coming in the west windows of my studio show off the quilting better than overhead lights at night.

I finished all of the quilting yesterday afternoon and got the quilt trimmed last night.  There is ditch quilting top to bottom and side to side along the edges of the 4 patches, 5" apart.

I cut 4.5" strips for the top and bottom borders of the zig zag quilt top.  I wasn't sure how wide to cut it and figured if I thought it was too wide, I can cut it down.

We haven't had any ...

Still quilting and some die cutting.............. from Exuberant Color

I'm still quilting this quilt and the lines of stitching are 5" apart.  The batting recommends 4" or closer so there will be some diagonal quilting lines in addition to the ones in the ditch.  I used a variegated thread for the ditch quilting so now I have to decide if I want to stay with it for the diagonal stitching, which will show.

I had a few charm packs (5" squares) of Kaffe fabric that I die cut into four 2 inch squares.  I never use the charm squares as an accurate 5" cut because lots of them ...

Ready for top and bottom borders......................... from Exuberant Color

The top is sewn on this zig zag but I haven't decided how wide the border at the top and bottom will be.  I will press this today and hopefully make a decision.

I finished one of the three started dishcloths.  Usually I can get 2 out of one ball of yarn.  Even though they all say they have the same number of yards it is pretty obvious to me that I'll only get a little over a half of another from this ball.  I have at least 2 more balls of this color so I'll be ...

Fun day........................... from Exuberant Color

I made a decision on the green triangles quilt.  This layout is 9 across by 10 down, too close to square so I think it will get a strip of the white dotted fabric at the top and bottom to increase the length.  I will cut the last 6 dotted triangles today.  Now I need to take down triangles and sew them into squares and then into rows and a top.

I have 32 green 6 inch finished triangles left over.  They will join all of the leftover blue and pink triangles in the project box.

I got two packages ...

Cutting, playing................................ from Exuberant Color

Finally I got some triangles cut from the black plaid to try some layouts with the green 6" finished triangles.  Originally this was my idea, all of the triangles marching in the same direction.  I can rotate the photo and see the triangles in all 4 different positions.

I haven't searched through the green triangles to see how many of each print is cut so I tried this layout with some that have 2 and 2 in addition to the 4 alike.

I cut some of the black with white dots too to try a zig zag layout.  This ...
