Cutting and planting............ from Exuberant Color

The separate column on the left is all of the new squares cut yesterday.  I think I need to cut the 2 light background squares down to 6.5" and then the flower will be more prominent.  Also the red flower with the purple background might need to be cut down.  I'll keep cutting......

I brought my Peony bouquet inside yesterday morning.  I will put it in my bathroom now where it will reflect in the mirror and look twice as large.

I finished potting most of the flowers in the remaining pots.  Now I have 5 pots on ...

Another busy day..................... from Exuberant Color

I had a nice visit yesterday morning with a cousin.  I had offered her some fabric and she is going to teach a 2 week sewing camp for young people.  The students are bringing fabric for their main project and she will supply the fabric for some fun extra projects.

After she left I baked a batch of cookies with dough I had made the night before.  They are going with family that is travelling out of state. I delivered the cookies to them and then did grocery shopping on the way home.

This Peony is  behind a tomato ...

Comparison............................. from Exuberant Color

I showed the original squares a few days ago, on the left, the 10" squares from a layer cake stack.  Then I cut a few more squares and showed the photo in the center.  Now I have added some more squares in the photo on the right.  I haven't looked for any fabrics yet to cut 12.5" squares from.  I may decide I'm happy with just the 3", 6", and 9" finished squares.

I started planting the pots for the porch.  I might get more planted today or tomorrow.

I'm trying a new type of pot ...

Cutting started.............. from Exuberant Color

Finally I found my 9.5" square to add to the 6.5" and 3.5" squares.  Since I'm beginning my cutting from 10" squares, I won't need the 12.5" square yet.

I'm just placing them on the design wall as I cut them and there are duplicates of some of them.  I'm realizing I could just come up with my own layout instead of following one in a Kaffe book.  I'll start looking through the pieces in the Kaffe large scrap box next.  Lastly I'll go to yardage to find more.

There ...

Wishes and dreams..................... from Exuberant Color

Wishes:  I wish I still had the energy and stamina I had 10 years ago.

Dreams:  I can dream about what I will make with my stash.

This is all of the 10" squares that had big blooms, some bigger than others.

There is a Kaffe quilt called "Bloomers" that has a layout that uses 3", 6", 9" and 12" finished squares.  I'll probably use the layout, but not the same fabrics as in the book.

Another dream:  I want to make a Trip Around the World with this assortment of Wm. Morris fabric.  I have been collecting  these ...

Sorting fabric................ from Exuberant Color

Some years I buy the 10" squares of Kaffe collective fabrics so I can see the whole line of fabric without having to buy yardage.  Last night I decided to go through the stack and pull out the ones that read one color or are a smaller print.  When I came to the one on the bottom left stack I realized I should also be pulling out the ones that have a single large flower on them.  I guess I get to go through the pile a second time today.

In the morning yesterday, after filling the bird feeders, I ...

Subtle changes depending on lighting.......... from Exuberant Color

The photo on the left was taken at night with the overhead lighting in my studio with one extra light shining across the bottom of the quilt top.

The one on the right was taken in full daylight from the west and north windows in the morning.  At first glance they don't look a lot different but the one on the right is warmer tones and more like the top actually looks.  If you look at the beige vertical strip that is to the left of the 5 octagon blocks and compare it in both photos, you can see ...

First quilt top for May 2026 from Exuberant Color

The stripe bottom border was removed and a replacement fabric sewn in.  Then the borders were added and it is finished.  I don't think it needs anything else.  It will be wall art rather than a cuddle quilt.  It is 48" wide and 53" tall.  The light fabrics aren't as bright of a contrast as they look in the photo.

I have company staying with me for a few days and we went plant shopping for my pots.  I didn't remember to get a photo of all of the plants so we brought this one in for ...

Creative play................... from Exuberant Color

I used a lot of the leftover 1.5" squares from the colorwash trays and tried a still life.  In the photo below you can see the scale.

I worked on the Kaffe medallion top yesterday.  I pinned up a border all around and have covered the purple stripe near the bottom with 2 options that I'll look at again this morning.

This is what it used to look like.

A busy day............... from Exuberant Color

As I started sorting pieces I'm trying to decide how to divide them up for storage in the project box.  Also is a strip 3" or shorter a chunk instead of a strip?

While I was in the basement doing a load of laundry, I pressed the binding fabric for this quilt and cut the 7 strips needed.  Maybe I'll get it sewn onto the quilt today.

When I went out to get the mail, I noticed the Weigela bushes are in bloom.  There is a Redbud tree growing right next to it on the back side of ...

I need to do some sorting....................... from Exuberant Color

I'm going to start a major sorting session in my studio.  The box of large Kaffe collective scraps is overflowing.

For the last several months I have been just piling smaller scraps on top of the project boxes on the shelves behind my sewing cabinet.

There were  2 boxes full on those shelves.  The one on the left is all pieced parts and the one on the right is small Kaffe collective scraps.  I think I'll start with the small scraps first and separate all of the strips from the odd shaped scraps.  I hope this is a ...

Not much inspiration............ from Exuberant Color

I put this medallion piece back up on the design wall and tried a few pieces for continuing borders, trying to figure out if it needs medium or dark or bright fabric.  I have a box full of 4" Broken Dishes blocks that might get used for a border.

I also have the other Maria Derse tall triangles quit top in progress that needs a decision on the insert strip fabric.  I think this one will come down and that one will go up on the wall.

I cut 20+ more green fabrics in 1.5" squares but I see ...

Some new fabric............... from Exuberant Color

I used to buy at least one color of every new Kaffe fabric but now I only buy the ones I like and sometimes more than one color.  The February fabric was finally delivered to the stores.  I thought this one might make nice bindings but I may end up using some in other projects.  I got 1/2 yard of each.

I had to have several colors of this one.  I got a yard of the red and half yards of the other 3.

This is the last batch of Marcia Derse paired strips, sewn last night.  I also ...

Side by side..................... from Exuberant Color

I couldn't decide whether the strips should run horizontal or vertical so I made one of each.  I was making these to use up the 1.5" and 2.5" Kaffe strips that I had cut several years ago.  I did end up having to cut a few new strips to have enough for both quilts.  The spacer strips in the quilt on the left are in there because I needed a little more width and I didn't want to make any more blocks.  I'm not sure which quilt I like best because I like both of ...

Second quilt finish for March 2026.............. from Exuberant Color

This one has just been called Kaffe Strippy 2 since I started working on it.  You can see Kaffe Strippy 1 here.  I need to make a collage of them side by side since the strips run in opposite directions on the 2 quilts.

This one is 47.5" x 71".  It has Hobbs 80/20 batting in it and it was longarm quilted by Robin Diaz.

The backing is leftover strips from other backings.  I was so happy to find three that looked nice together.

The binding is a zigzag print that worked well with both sides of the ...

First quilt finish for March 2026................. from Exuberant Color

Photographing flannel is a little tricky.  It looks blurry but actually is just soft.  The top was made 2 years ago and finally it is a finished quilt.  It is 53" x 70".  It has Hobbs 80/20 batting in it and it was longarm quilted by Robin Diaz.

The backing is a flannel I found on sale.  It is a little heavier than most flannels and it is a yarn dyed woven design, not a print.  One long panel has the stripe running vertical and the remainder was cut into two crosswise strips and sewn end to end to ...

Quilting...................... from Exuberant Color

I got this little baby quilt quilted last night.  I wasn't sure how I was going to quilt it but ended up ditch quilting the center and wavy lines in the border.  I'll get it trimmed today and cut the binding.  Hopefully I'll get the binding sewn on too and get stared basting another baby quilt.

I pulled out my #48 Flower Basket Kaffe fabric to see if it will work with the 16 patch blocks.  I need to do some measuring to see if it can be cut to a size that will work.

It's ...

Social time........................... from Exuberant Color

My grandson and his wife brought lunch yesterday and then stayed long enough to help me with a couple heavy duty tasks.  Afterwards I did some grocery shopping.

Last night I cut the last stratas into sections and made some more Kaffe 16 patch blocks.  I love busy quilts, and I'm sure a few of you wonder why I'm not using white as every other square to "calm" it down.  I love all of the patterns in the fabric running together.  There are 2 of each of these blocks, so 18 total.

This group of leftover blocks has ...

Catch up day...................... from Exuberant Color

There were lots of little jobs I needed to do to clean up the sewing studio.  First was the staystitching around this quilt.  Now it can be put on a hanger on the rack in the basement, waiting for its backing to be sewn.

While I had a load of laundry in the washer I looked for some leftover pastel 16 patch blocks in the Kaffe orphan box.  If you enlarge this photo you will see the block on the left has selvage showing.  I colored in the part that will show with permanent markers but I'm not sure ...

Cutting............... from Exuberant Color

I decided I needed a little more variety in the triangle blocks for the medallion quilt.  It took me an hour to find my cutting die.  I need to do some cleaning and organizing.

I sewed some of the triangles into squares but didn't turn the iron on last night.

These blocks will go in the column on the right when I get them sewn.

The last 2 flowers on the Amaryllis have opened up.  The red edge on the petals is so delicate it hardly shows up in the photo.

Our warm weather is history now, snow flurries ...
