Multi-size blocks and block inserts........... from Exuberant Color

A friend and I were chatting yesterday about previous quilts I have made with multi-size blocks.  This Kaffe Collective one is from way back in 2013.  It is 2 layouts I tried and I sewed the one on the right.  I would like to do another Bear Paw quilt some day and maybe try a variation of the layout on the left.

In 2016 I experimented with different size batik triangles and made two quilt tops of my own original design.  There are 4 different size triangles in both of these.  I really enjoyed making them.

The batik one on ...

21 small and one large..... from Exuberant Color

I went with the green flowers for the 6" center of the big block.  The small churn dash blocks are 9" finished and the large one is 18" so this is still a pretty small project, just 45" square.  Just one big block looks good now with this many small blocks.  When I add more small blocks I wonder if it will need more big blocks.
When I made this quilt top back in 2017 I had just one large block but of a different pattern than all of the other blocks in the quilt top.  I like the big ...

A BIG block........... from Exuberant Color

The pieces for the 18" block are huge!
I laid the sewn pieces on top of the 2 choices I had for the center square.  I have many more choices I can try too.
Here is choice #2.  I have a huge pile of 6.5" squares that I could try but I think I'll use one of these 2.

Just a reminder and link for the occasional readers of my blog: my pop-up shop is open for a week, click here.  Several people have mentioned to me that they just read my blog once a week so I ...

Fabric candidates........ from Exuberant Color

I thought maybe I could find enough energy to sew the one big 18" Churn Dash block but got stuck in indecision on the fabrics.  The two on the right would be the outside 2 fabrics and one of the 2 on the left would be the center square.  I'm not totally sold on this yet so I didn't cut it.

Bye bye Beachy quilt top (from the pop-up shop) made of Marcia Derse fabrics!  I spent almost all day yesterday getting 16 packages ready to mail and making two trips to the post office.  I sold 3 ...

Blogiversary.......... from Exuberant Color

13 years ago today I started writing this blog.  I had always done a lot of photography since age 10 so this was the perfect outlet for me being a visual person.  I always felt it was easier to convey a message with an illustration or photo so my posts have been photo heavy most of the time.  I am ever so grateful for all of you readers and especially for those who comment and have become friends from all over the world.

I made 6 more Churn Dash blocks yesterday.  As I listened to all of the fireworks being ...

More churn dash.......... from Exuberant Color

I cut and sewed three more churn dash blocks yesterday.  They are only 9" blocks so I will need a lot of them.
As I put each group on the design wall it helps me make decisions like what colors do I want more of and should the centers be light or dark.  I have been using 10" squares so far but I'm about ready to cut into yardage now.
When I went out to get the mail I noticed how much I like the combination of plants in this porch pot.  There is just enough purple on the ...

A dozen blocks........... from Exuberant Color

This is a happy dozen blocks isn't it?  It is fun to see how some of the large prints look cut up.  I will continue making them when I need something to sew.

I'm itching to start a new project.  Aren't we all?  I have been working so hard on the pop-up shop that I didn't want to do any major thinking and cutting this past week.  I have the offerings mostly together now and dates set.  The pop up shop will be July 7 - 12.  It will open for email subscribers at noon ET on ...

Repeat fun............ from Exuberant Color

That was so much fun Friday that I made 4 new blocks yesterday.  I have lots more strips to use........

I also made 3 more Churn Dash blocks with the Kaffe Collective fabrics.  I have 12 done now.  I'll bring them upstairs to get a good photo of them all together tomorrow.

I'm still working on a pop-up shop.  If you want 24 hour early access you can sign up on the email list form on my right sidebar.  I don't have a date set yet but it will be soon.

A few changes........... from Exuberant Color

I made a few changes on the layout of this quilt yesterday to spread out the yellows and golds a little more.  Kaffe had a lot of yellow and gold prints in his first 20 years of fabrics and more than half of the strips in this quilt are his early fabrics.  After I took this photo I took down the rows and clipped them to prepare for sewing the top.

I am still picking the tomatoes as they show a little color.  I haven't seen as many squirrels in my yard the last few weeks but I'm ...

Onion rings layout............. from Exuberant Color

I decided to make the extra seven blocks for an 8 x 10 layout, 60" x 75".  I think this is the final layout but I'll look at it at least one more time to make sure I don't have the same fabrics next to each other.

For me seeing the blocks closer gives a real view on a scrap quilt where there is so much variety in fabrics.

Kaffe collective churn dash blocks

I also sewed three more churn dash blocks.  I haven't pressed them yet so they are a little puffy on the design wall ...

68 blocks.......... from Exuberant Color

I got caught up on the strip pieced Kaffe collective fabric blocks with the Onion Rings center strips yesterday.  It was more humid so I only spent a little time outside cutting volunteer trees.  I have 6 piles of 10 blocks and one pile of 8 blocks in the photo and thought this was all of them but then I found 5 more blocks laying by my computer.  If I do a 8 x 9 layout it would measure 60" x 68" which isn't a very good proportion.  If I did 7 x 10 instead it would be 53 ...

A finished quilt top........ from Exuberant Color

I decided to use the already prepared circles for the centers of the daisies.  I sewed them on by machine with invisible thread and a narrow zig zag.  Since this will be a throw quilt I didn't see the need for hand applique on the circles.  After sewing on the circles I finished sewing the quilt top together.  It is 48" x 65.5".  I briefly considered adding a border but then remembered I want to be making smaller quilts.....I seem to end up with larger ones most of the time.
I had been watching for the Asiatic ...

I found it............... from Exuberant Color

I knew where I had last seen the bag with the Mylar circle and some centers tried on a previous quilt but I didn't dig down far enough until yesterday and there it was.

What I didn't remember is that the circles had already been gathered and were ready to be appliqued.

I tried them on the wallhanging and they match well enough with the daisy colors.  This would be the easy way out to just use them.  The fabric is purple cotton woven one direction and gold metallic woven in the other direction.

Close up view.  No ...

How to avoid looking for center circle fabric........ from Exuberant Color

I am trying something else today with fonts.  This is the normal size set to Bold.  This is large.  Why is there such a difference in size??  I want the large that was available the first time I tried the new Blogger format.  And this is the largest font.

I still haven't attempted to find the center circle fabric for the 3 daisy blocks for the previous quilt.  Maybe today..........
Here are the first 6 churn dash blocks.  Some of the large prints cut up just fine, others have such a wide range of values in them that I ...

3 new starts........... from Exuberant Color

I had to go to W*lm*rt yesterday for all of the items I can't get at my local family owned grocery store.  I got enough for a month.  I have only been over there one time (in May) since the shelter in place order so this was my June trip.  They didn't see me at all in April.  I used to go over there 2 or 3 times a week to walk 2500 steps and then pick up a few items.  Times change.

My neighbors on each side of me mowed their lawns so I felt ...

Only a little progress........... from Exuberant Color

I got the last 3 rows sewn together and up on the design wall but I still haven't made a decision about the centers of the daisies.  I know I have a mylar circle the right size for the centers but it wasn't where I thought it was so I'll look for that today.  As much as I would like all three center circles to be the same color I haven't come up with a solution yet.

My first tomato was turning red so I decided to pick it and let it ripen inside.  I just ...

Partially sewn........ from Exuberant Color

The scariest part of this project was trimming the daisy blocks to match up with a 4 block section of the quilt.  I wasn't paying a lot of attention to which way I had the block turned to trim but all 3 luckily came out the same with 3 light rays and 2 dark rays touching the top edge.

This is how far I got yesterday.  All of the sections in the top 2/3 are sewn together and pinned to the wall but the daisy blocks aren't sewn in yet.  I need to add their centers before ...

Almost there.......... from Exuberant Color

I sewed all of the rest of the rectangle blocks and played with the layout for about 2 hours.  I moved the bottom daisy block down one row since I had added a row of blocks to the left and 2 rows at the bottom.  It needed moving for balance.  Now I wondered if I should put in 5 daisy blocks instead of 3 since 3 was so perfect in the smaller size.  Do they look kind of lonely now?  I need to decide on the center circles for the daisy blocks, whether they should all be the same or ...

Play day.................. from Exuberant Color

Yesterday I revisited the Kaffe orphan block box and played with a few of the choices on my design wall.  I felt no guilt for not doing any sewing, no quilt police here, just pure therapy of playing.  By the way for all of you who are in a slump and really would love to start a new quilt instead of working on a UFO I say GO FOR IT!!  It's FREE therapy!!  Who turns down free therapy?  Put a smile on your face and play with your fabrics with no guilt, just pleasure.
After I had all that ...

20 more blocks........... from Exuberant Color

I made 20 more blocks and added them to the design wall.  If I finished it right now it would be about 41" x 53", what I would consider a lap quilt, not even big enough to be called a throw quilt.  If I add one more row to the width and 2 rows to the length I will need to move the daisy blocks to a more balanced arrangement.

How did I get to this point on this quilt?  I started making Kaffe fabric rectangle blocks to have some soothing no-brainer sewing to do each day for my therapy ...
