When You Can't Reach the Peddle.... from Val's Quilting Studio

While visiting our grand guys this past weekend, knowing I made quilts and after inquisitively watching me stitch during movie time, one of their friends really wanted me to teach him how to sew. My daughter didn't hesitate to unpack her sewing machine and we let the boys dive into a box of fabric scraps. As I sat and worked on some binding, I taught the oldest, who is nine, how to use the machine. I taught him the main parts of the machine: foot, pedal and the ol' 1/4 inch!

He was very focused, detailed oriented and ...

Best of 2018 Linky from Val's Quilting Studio

I like participating in Cheryl's "Best of" Linky Party as it creates the opportunity and motivation for me to look back and see how my year of blogging and quilting has been.
My "word" for 2018 was CREATE. But....in reflection, well, THAT didn't really happen now did it. I find myself wondering, how can so much happen in a year, and yet, so much not. In review, I did finish seven quilts, but if I were to be honest, it was more a year of self growth than creative expression. It's not the details that matter ...

Christmas Wishes... from Val's Quilting Studio

"Dear Santa, All's I want for Christmas is a mini drone."
What's even more adorable about this picture is, you can't see it, but Santa is using his right hand to  show to our grand guy "how" to fly a drone as he patiently demonstrated the "trick" is in a slow liftoff. Our little guy literally skipped away from Santa with the
biggest smile on his face exclaiming to his mom and me:
"I can't wait for Christmas!"

Welcome Christmas!
Wishing you a holiday month filled with the same joy and excitement found by our five ...

A Super Hero Finish from Val's Quilting Studio

This is a pretty "busy" finish...but with two jelly rolls and a few 1/4 yards of superhero prints I was able to quickly put together this array of Super Hero fabrics for our grand-guys 5th birthday quilt! His two requests: "Meme it has to have Captain America and Spiderman annnnddddd be long enough to cover my feet! My feet fall out of last year's quilt now!"

It finished measuring 53"x 68" and should be big enough this upcoming winter
as he keeps his feet warm under it's soft, fleece backing of superheros.
(Notice our traditional ...

A Birthday Celebration! from Val's Quilting Studio

Our little grand-guy is five and we celebrated by treating him to his first college football game!

The pre-game "kid zone" events were full of fun! Bouncy houses, "cool" cars and big foam hats!

Boise State is know for it's BIG BLUE...and they didn't disappoint. By half time we had scored four touchdowns to the opponents one, each filled with fireworks, loud cheers and music.

He and Poppi spent quilty time together as he taught him the "ins and outs" of football.
...and his day was made when Poppi even wore his funny hair!

A much needed ...

Tuesday Archives #196: Guess it's time for a break... from Val's Quilting Studio

Wow! Okay I missed my own linky party.
Val's Quilting Studio
Seriously....if that's not a sign I don't what is.
It's May...and May is always full of surprises for a teacher.
Personally, I've been thrown off course this past week.
Too many changes at work and at home...all at the same time.
Nothing bad. But never-the-less change and adjusting to the fact things will be different.
June first I'll also be on summer break...which means yet, another change.
I find myself tranquil on my days off as I enjoy mornings of movie watching, afternoon ...

A Springtime Walk?? from Val's Quilting Studio

Noooottttt exactly. I spent the weekend visiting our daughter and her family. We awoke to a skiff of snow yet had already had signed up for a Saint Patty's Day 7k along the Snake River Rim Trail.
So we bundled up and conquered the cold below 32 degree weather.

I wasn't so bad once we got going and the sun peaked out every now and then from behind the clouds. We gradually got to the 2 1/4 mile turn around spot: Evel Knievel's Ramp.

My grand-guy and I even conquered the "mountain" that was built as ...

A Happy Anniversary & More! from Val's Quilting Studio

Oh My! I've been off having fun on vacation to sunny Arizona where we grew up.
Hubby and I celebrated our 29th Anniv...

...and my Dad celebrated his 80th.

Both on Super-Bowl Sunday! Can you say P A R T Y!!!!!

Yes! We got married on my Dad's birthday and never has a year gone by without the ongoing "joke" that my husband gets a "check-in-the-mail" every month for taking me off his hands. ARG!

We traveled together as a family and our little guy so enjoyed his first plane ride from Oregon to Arizona. Lucky me! He ...

Christmas Joy! from Val's Quilting Studio

Our grand-guy is visiting with us until we bring him home on Christmas Eve.
His Poppi treated him to this special Reindeer pancake breakfast this morning:

He loves Rudolph this year and was over the moon happy! Nothing better than that to remind me of the true Joy of Christmas than to see it through the eyes of an energetic four year old.

He's of course, counting down the days until "Santa" arrives and in the mean time,
is keeping his Meme and Poppi hopping as they too begin to count down the days to Christmas. (LOL!) But having ...

Moving Forward... from Val's Quilting Studio

Well I returned home this weekend. My Meme duties finished, for now. I'm grateful for the precious moments I got to share as our daughter and SIL settled into their new home and welcomed their new little baby. I soooo enjoyed all my newborn cuddle time.

I also had the duty of unpacking and setting up the boys' bedroom. I never tire to seeing my my quilts being used and it was rewarding to see the boys' dinosaur quilts together and looking good.

My daughter texted me this picture below this morning exclaiming: "I swaddled him in one of ...

Spiderman Quilt Gifted from Val's Quilting Studio

Sometimes I create a quilt without really thinking about the process. This one started with a sketch. I pieced it. Sewed it....and then found myself  a little worried when it came to the quilting. It's a crib size quilt and I really wanted the effect of that big web, but worried about the unquilted spaces.
All came out fine. For the first time ever, I bought a premade binding but that came out fine too.

As soon as our grand guy opened it...he ran and put it on his bed....with his Spiderman pillow.
He has slept ...

A peek at some quilting... from Val's Quilting Studio

I got both of these quilts finished this past weekend:
Spiderman is all "webbed". Arg....what was I thinking when I layered flannel, batting annndddd a thick fleece. Oh this will most likely become our grand-guys "new" favorite quilt...but I had a lot of thread breaks quilting this one....but I finally got him done.

After spidey was done, I ran my dinosaur pantograph to finish our soon-to-be-born little guys quilt.
I love that it coordinates with his big brother's dinosaur quilt.
I did machine stitch the binding onto both of them for a quick finish and they ...

Shoshone Falls, Idaho and Snow! from Val's Quilting Studio

I spent most of my weekend visiting our oldest daughter in her new home town of Twin Falls, Idaho.
This is Shoshone Falls Idaho:
I'm so excited that they live here now. The canyon is beautiful and offers ample opportunities for family hiking and kayaking. The town is inviting with enough to do without being too big.

All my pictures are a little "grey" in this post, as we had our first "skiff" of snow this weekend too.

It was that cold, wet, fluffy kind of snow.
We didn't let it stop us from touring the town and ...

I'm Happily Back! from Val's Quilting Studio

I sure missed my routines of blogging and sewing. But, I'm also so grateful I had the foresight to put so much on hold as we enjoyed family fun with our daughter, SIL and grand-guy as they stayed with us this past month during their transition. We so admire their patience as they make this big move with a wee one on the way! Wow! So much has happened.
Our grand-guy turned four! ( I didn't get his spiderman quilt done in time, but luckily, four year olds really don't know the difference and he'll be excited ...

A Fall Break... from Val's Quilting Studio

 Happy Fall!!
Fall is admittedly my very favorite time of year and how lucky I feel to have our daughter and
grand-guy staying with us as their little family transitions in selling their home and moving during this festive time of year. (Oh, and yes a new baby due by Thanksgiving) With that said, I'm going to put Tuesday Archives on a brief vacation and well my blog too, as much of my time after work is being spent with this little guy. He loves to take Jackson for a walk with me. We routinely find ourselves filling our ...

Step away from the machine! from Val's Quilting Studio

Yep! Yesterday was one of those days!
I was looking forward to my "spiderman quilting" when, everything that could go wrong, did!
The metallic thread kept breaking. "Somebody" really cute kept interrupting me and then finally, I jammed the machine. ARG! My hubby was so nice to help me take things apart to fix it. But I think I need to raise my presser foot a bit to accomidate for the thickness of the quilt??
To say the least, my grand guy is really excited about his birthday quilt and
was pretty disappointed to not watch meme work on it ...

It's SPIDERMAN! from Val's Quilting Studio

I wanted to create an original "super hero" quilt for my grand guys birthday quilt this year.
He and I always have fun playing "Spiderman" with silly string and I wanted to capture that memory. I searched the internet for ideas and found none. When while on a walk I thought to use a color sheet.

I used my projector at school and enlarged it to the size I wanted for the quilt.

I then traced and cut all my pieces.

Then using the livingroom window as my "lightbox"

...I taped the pattern and my background fabric to the ...

Superhero Walk-A-Thon from Val's Quilting Studio

Introducing our new class of "Super Second Graders"!

Okay Ladies, we are never too old to wear a tutu! (OMG!!)
My cooperating teacher keeps me young and I truly love her for that!

This is our annual fundraiser for misc. classroom supplies.
It's fun and makes for a great Friday.

I hope you'll stop by this weekend as I'm looking forward to sharing the beginnings
of my grand guy's Spiderman quilt with you.  I even took the little guy fabric shopping
with me and he helped me pick out ALL the fabric! So fun and he ...

It's FOOTBALL Season! from Val's Quilting Studio

Aughhhhh....we all love those ultimate quilting moments. You know the ones when someone just reallllly loves the quilt you made them. They cherish is. They USE IT. They love it.
Our daughter and SIL are in the middle of packing for a big move (Meme Note: A move that will now make them only 2 1/2 hours away instead of their current 3 1/2 hours.) Anyhoo, while packing my daughter told our grand guy he gets to keep out one quilt for the transition. Annddd he chose:
Image result for drum roll
