Top 10 Jelly Roll Quilt Patterns from Fat Quarter Shop's Jolly Jabber

Get ready to roll with my TOP TEN jelly roll quilt patterns! I’ve collected some of my favorite jelly roll-friendly quilt patterns to share with you.

If you’re new to quilting, Jelly Rolls are 2.5″ x 42″ strips that also go by Bali Pops, Roll-Ups, Rolie Polies, or Design Rolls (depending on the manufacturer). But no matter what you call them, they’re fun to sew with and oh so, pretty.

All these quilts listed below are available in paper and PDF versions, and if you’d like to see the full video of my picks, read ...

scrappy pinwheels finished from Making A Lather

My Friday finish this week is scrappy pinwheels. I really enjoyed making this pattern and quilt. I started it in 2018 in an effort to use 2 1/2 inch scraps. It would be great for a jelly roll. One jelly roll would make it bigger than this one. I liked it so much, I recently cut another one in upcycled shirt fabrics.

60 x 68 = 14 yards

I quilted an overall paisley and used the backing for binding

Plus a Nine Patch Quilt from Lovin' Life At The End Of The Dirt Road

Today I'm sharing another jelly roll quilt. I'm tickled to be making a dent in these and finally finishing  some quilts that have been UFOs for a while. I saw a picture online for this quilt called Egg Hunt, from the Fat Quarter Shop. It was just a picture and searching for it now, the only reference I am able to find is a post that leads to Facebook for a kit that is no longer available. I had

scrappy pinwheels is a top from Making A Lather

I am surprised that this quilt is larger than expected. I thought it would be a small lap quilt, but, it is a good size lap quilt. Scrappy pinwheels is a top. I really like the pattern and revisiting older scraps. Hopefully, it will get a turn on the long arm soon.

I started it in 2018 cutting the pieces and sewing some flippy corners. It went into the ufo closet for a vacation.

I made it a goal here in February as part of the 5 quilts project. It has been a delight to work with it.

My version ...

Oh, My Strippy Stars Quilt Along – HSTs from From My Carolina Home

Ready to learn how to get half square triangles out of jelly roll strips? It isn’t hard, but you will have to be very careful doing these, as the cuts will be on the bias rather than straight of grain. Don’t be afraid, let’s take it one step at a time.

Begin by carefully pressing your 6 background (BG) strips and 6 jelly roll (JR) medium/dark strips with a generous amount of spray starch or Best Press. This will help keep the bias from stretching as you work with the half-square triangles.

Sew a JR strip ...

twisted braid finish from Making A Lather

I have a finish. Twisted braid is ready to gift. I drew this ufo number for my 5 quilts earlier this year, just about the time, I learned my new Grandbaby will be a boy.  perfect timing

64 x 64 = 14 yards

I used a lovely, sheet for the back and free motion bubbles for the quilting.

pinwheels progress from Making A Lather

I have been sewing rows for my scrappy pinwheels quilt. The center is done and waiting for borders. I think I will keep it simple.

I have enjoyed making this pattern, so much so, that, I cut another, larger, quilt in shirt fabric. I guess I plan to live forever.

pinwheels progress from Making A Lather

I had a chance to make more scrappy pinwheel blocks, and, check how they will work as a row. I am really liking how easy this pattern is for scraps. When I cut my 2 1/2 inch strips for any other project, I can cut either the 4 1/2 inch or 6 1/2 inch rectangle from the leftover, depending on what is left. If, I can get a 2 1/2 inch square from any leftovers, I can use that, too. The background is a 4 1/2 inch square and 2 1/2 inch squares. I ...

scrappy pinwheels start from Making A Lather

I opened another Ufo box for my 5 quilts projects, and, found a fun older project. So, I am sewing scrappy pinwheels at Friday sews. It is easy and portable. It is fun to revisit some oldie but goodie fabrics as I piece the blocks. I found 3 different block pieces cut, and, made, when I opened the box. I needed to sew into block quarters below. This could easily be a jelly roll pattern.

Evidently, I can't count. I needed to cut and add a few more. My goal was 80 blocks.

So, that, I could make 20 ...

twisted braid top from Making A Lather

I auditioned neutral, red, and light blue for the sashing. But, I decided to use dark blue. The top is ready for quilting as soon as there is time on the longarm.

I found this pattern in this book. I have had it for awhile. I cut and put the pattern together as a kit in 2018. I drew it as a random number for part of my 5 quilts early this year. I took it as a portable project to  piece and when all the other quilts on the list were waiting to be quilted, I finished it here ...

twisted braid ufo from Making A Lather

I used a random number generator to pick a number from my ufo list for my 5 quilts focus. Twisted braid was the choice. My notes said that, I had cut everything in the quilt in 2018. My guess, I had a group of matching 2 1/2 strips and thought I might as well cut it into a pattern I wanted to try rather than put them away. haha. I took it with me to Friday sew. and started sewing. Something wasn't right. It called for a jelly roll, and I know I started with enough strips. But ...

one monthly goal finish - shine from Making A Lather

I have finished my March one monthly goal at elm street quilts by completing my Shine quilt. It is a free pattern at moda bakeshop. I started it as part of the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy in January 2020. I made one or two different color blocks each month for the year. It was a top in November. Now it is quilted and bound.

66 x 82 = 12 yards

I used leftover strips for the binding and machine sewed it on the front

This was a great block and easy enough to do, and, it uses a ...
