shirt triangles from Making A Lather

Sometimes, while cutting shirts into useable pieces, there are off cuts that are not really useful for big pieces. I tend to throw them into a bucket to deal with later. I was in the mood to sort and cut. Some of these pieces will be great for string or crumb blocks.

As I dug into the bucket, some just went into another bucket for strings, but, a few, I could cut into HSTS. Most of my goals this month involve the longarm, which is currently busy.  I had fun just playing in the scraps.

More out the door from Art In Search

The comfort quilt made from 10" squares (white paired with batik), has been finished, sent and received. The HSTs are made by sewing around all 4 sides of paired squares (10") and cutting diagonally from both sets of corners. I used the triangle ruler, Clearly Perfect Slotted Trimmer, to trim the cuts while still a triangle before it is pressed open. This means you only have to cut the block on two sides, saving lots of time and cutting. The ruler works well, but I have to say it is a bit thin and I accidentally snapped the corner of ...

zuckerwatte in progress from Making A Lather

I have sew enjoyed the pink inspiration with the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. Looking at the design walls all filled with pink, makes me happy. I don't have a design wall or even a design floor, but, I sure have pink scraps. I am doing rsc a little different this year, by concentrating on ufos by color. I miss sewing the blocks, and watching them grow, though.

It was time to dig around in my pink 2 1/2 inch drawer for the rainbow scrap challenge. The drawer was overflowing. I knew that I would need 2 ...

Planned Improv: Creative HSTs with Scrappy Slab from Goer

I use the descriptor "planned improv" loosely. Sometimes the improv comes in the piecing. Sometimes it comes in the design work before piecing starts. In this case, the improv had to do with having no idea where I was going when I started piecing scraps together. And the plan was that HSTs would be involved, and I was working with a limited amount of scraps (at the beginning) with a limited color palette (that I'd curated for the bag of scraps).

This quilt has been a long time coming. The scraps that were the start of it predate February ...

Retreat and Refocus from Art In Search

The past weeks have been hectic and scattered. I had computer issues- my big computer, the iMac, went down. The repair shop found a system software update went haywire and chewed up all the memory. My Mac laptop and my iPad are no longer allowed updates to the system, browser or Blogger. They work fine, but are not allowed upgrades. These fully useful tools can no longer work for what I need them to do. It is a terrible waste of resources. I am faced with buying a new laptop or iPad. The laptop will allow me more functionality, store ...

wedding ring blocks from Making A Lather

It was a difficult week last week, and, I escaped as often as possible to the sewing machine. I worked on piecing  the 16 hsts that are in these blocks. I would sew during the day and then, trim and iron in the evening watching tv. My hubby bought the " leave me alone I am watching hallmark Christmas movies" socks for me last year for Christmas. I am practically living in them. haha.

These are part of a scrap bag I had last year about this time. looking back at the blog post, I see why I am having a ...

Midweek: Triangle Endeavo(u)r from With Strings Attached

On Sunday evening we watched Endeavour on PBS Masterpiece.*  I was considering fabric for the back of the HST geese quilt.

When I pulled this off the shelf I knew I had to use it.

And here is Triangle Endeavour, finished!

I could have chosen any colorway for the back but the brown/orange Wamsutta print -- the big piece on the right -- is one I've wanted to use up for a long time.   I think I got the orange Endeavour just last year.  The floral at the bottom was part of a stash reduction. (I've been the fortunate ...

HOME from Nestlings By Robin

The Autumn issue of Quilter's World
will have my new quilt design
that I started this past January! YAY!

It is so bothersome that I
have to keep so much secret
from all my quilting friends
when I am working.
Once the design is planned,
it is time to go fabric hunting!
As you can see, I wanted a muted
selection of neutrals in
gray and taupe.
Look at the perfect and gorgeous
Barbara Brackman fabrics
I found along the way!
Giddiness!
Have you ever tried to pay attention
to what you are doing at a retreat?
~LOL~
I ...

I Love Scrappy Quilts! from TheEclecticAbuela

My title will come as no surprise if you have seen any of my quilts!

This first one is made of HSTs that I created from a batch of "creatively-cut" (AKA wonky) squares that I got from a friend (Thanks, Leesa). This is the second quilt from the batch of squares--you can find the first HERE.

Scrappy HSTs--64" x 76"

This photo is of three quilts (overlapped) made of 3.5" squares. I cut these from scraps and combine them with neutrals to use as leaders and enders.

Leaders & Enders Quilts (each is 64" x 76")

These also have backs ...

odds and ends from Making A Lather

Oh my, I see in the picture, one of my shoofly has a HST turned the wrong way. sigh... I didn't see it before blogging about it.
In an effort to tidy around my sewing machine, I made a few random blocks. I need to attach a binding and if I don't clean everything will end up in a jumbled mess on the floor. haha
These shoofly blocks are made with the gifted hsts from the orphan adoption at Oh scrap.

orphan triangles from Making A Lather

I won a quilty orphan adoption from Erin Hutchinson From My patchwork life
I asked for the little bag of HSTS 1 1/2 inch size for my shoofly blocks. Aren't they wonderful? Thank  you Erin - great fun

Remember as a little child, playing with paper dolls or colorforms or mosaics. I felt like that, as I ironed and sorted all the little triangles. I trimmed them, and, I was entranced with sorting them into color groups. So pretty, and many I had not seen in my own stash, So much happiness in a little zip lock bag.

more triangles to do from Making A Lather

Just as I was running out of triangles for shoofly, I found this cute little gifted pack of triangles.

I sewed and sewed ...

And then I started trimming to 1 1/2 inch.

Last week's to do:
1. go home from the hospital - done
2. rainbow row by row in teal - some progress
3. border pieces for frolic mystery quilt - some progress

Dare I even hope to get something done next week? Staying home is my normal, so it doesn't seem like a burden yet. Jeff was supposed to stay in for 2 weeks anyway.

next week's ...

Spirit Song Quilt Progress and a Puppy Update from Cheeky Cognoscenti

Look, you guys -- all of my Spirit Song Birds In the Air blocks are sewn together!  The top row of three 16" blocks are connected, and the remaining three rows have two blocks connected and one more block needing to be attached.  This phase is going MUCH more smoothly now that all of my seams are nestling nicely again, but alas -- my studio is not at all puppy-proofed, so I'm not getting in much machine sewing time these days!

Spirit Song Quilt Coming Along

I sewed and pressed exactly ONE seam this morning.  The rest of Sam's morning ...

A Decision and some Progress from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

A few weeks ago, I asked for some ideas on how to use some fabric I had in my stash to make a donation quilt.  You guys definitely came through and gave me a lot to think about!

Here were a few of the pieces I had on hand.  There were lots of designs suggested but some required me to go buy more fabric and that just wasn't part of the plan.

I really needed a design that would use the background fabric to its best yield and had pieces large enough to show off the dog prints I ...

Inventory Quilt Project from Stitchin at Home

Have you heard of the Inventory Quilt Project being hosted by Just Wanna Quilt? The idea is to use one piece of each fabric in your stash to make a quilt to show your stash all in one quilt. You can use fabrics in one colour, for example or maybe the more the merrier version. I'm the more the merrier kind a gal with my project.

I am one of the featured designers and my turn to showcase my project and pattern is today March 4th.

The pattern I'm using is called 'Flipping Out'. I know strange name ...

Squeezing in A Small Finish from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I am extremely blessed that a lot of my clients share their scraps with me.  Every once in a while, long after I have quilted their masterpieces, they purge their scraps and bring me a bag of their treasures.

So it was fun this week to see the quilt on my frame where I was already using the gifted scraps.
Aren't the colors on this one yummy?!

I shared not long ago how I was creating some HSTs using Kona Shadow and some gifted scrap triangles from a friend.

Well, I am ready to share the little quilt I ...

Another CIL Finish from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I hope you are not getting tired of seeing all of these Covered In Love finishes.  But right now, they are about the only personal quilts I have been working on.  Today I am sharing quilt number four out of seven.  I am over halfway there!!

I decided on a diagonal layout for these blocks - so the light and dark fabrics flow right across the quilt.

You can see the quilting really shows - I stitched in a simple freehand ruffly flower across the quilt.

Kat had sent me a lot of large cuts for the backings.  There was a lovely ...

Oh Scrap! Half Square Triangles from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

There are always multiple projects going on in my sewing room.  While I have been sewing up the Covered in Love blocks and my RSC blocks, I have also been working on sewing up some miscellaneous triangles that came to me in a scrap bag.

I paired them up with some Kona Shadow and have been trimming them to 4.5" square.

I finally finished them and decided to start playing with layouts.  This is what is up on my design wall now.  I think I will go ahead and sew this up.  It should finish up at 36" x ...

Tara from Sew Preeti Quilts

Picture this - About noon on Superbowl Sunday

Me: I am going to eat my lunch and watch TV. Do you want to join me?
Paul (reclining on the couch): Nah, I am watching the eyelid show.
Me: Ooh that is a good show.
Paul: It was greatly reviewed.
Me: Yup, I watch it everyday.

Later, during the 4th quarter of the Superbowl game
Me: I am done here.
Paul: Sup babe?
Me: My eyelid show is about to begin.

For the Eyelid Show

Here is a quilt perfect for use during a little one's eyelid show :-)

Covered In Love Finish #2 from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Ta Da - Here is the second Covered in Love quilt finish. I decided to lay these blocks out in an asymmetrical  design.  It is very different looking than the first quilt I made using these blocks  (which you can see here.)

I tried to get a good photograph of the quilting but the weather wasn't cooperating.  When I can, I use the piecing to guide my quilting spacing so I don't have to do any marking.  This pattern I call a traveling swirl.  I used the intersections of the squares to space out the swirls - alternating the placement ...
