Quick Strip Piecing from Heart Desire Creations

Have you ever just wanted to sew, sew, sew?! No complex cutting, no pinning, and especially no thinking! That’s exactly how I felt a few days ago.  I dug through my charity quilt bin and pulled out pretty strips that a reader donated last year. They were not full strips, some really short, some half strips and the full length ones I cut so I would have all varying sizes.  I wanted some sort of accent in there so I cut 2 x 2 1/2″ black and white blocks to put between each strip.

And next?  I sewed ...

A Brilliant Array from Heart Desire Creations

These two quilts were donated quilt tops for Hospice that I quilted and bound.

img_1313.jpg

img_1312-1.jpg

These two were tops I put together from blocks sewn at the Quilt & Sew-In retreat. I also quilted and bound these.

img_1326.jpgimg_1325.jpg

Both were backed with yummy, soft fleece. I especially like the butterflies.

img_1327.jpg

I couldn’t resist lining all the Hospice quilts to date on the clothesline.  All that color! All that generous effort by so many! Looks like a carnival!

img_1328.jpg

And here they are, all stacked up and ready to go. At the end of summer I will hit it again and add a few ...

Good-bye May – Come on June! from Heart Desire Creations

Whew! The extreme heat of May (weeks of 90 degrees+) kept me inside getting lots of sewing done. All but two of the completed Hospice quilt tops have been quilted and bound, bringing the total today to 22! Four of those quilts were donated completely pieced, quilted and bound. A very talented and generous quilter donated them, but she wishes to remain anonymous. Look how great these are!

And here’s my May wrap-up.  Now that it’s June, I’ll be taking a break from Hospice sewing and concentrating on a few of my many Works in Progress.

Leaping Lizards! from Heart Desire Creations

A couple of years ago Kaufman Fabrics generously donated “scrap” fabric to the Fairview Quilters, the group I work with to make Hospice quilts. I quickly grabbed the bright batik scraps and fun lizard fabric. Last year a quilt was made with some of the lizard fabric and I saved a few of the leftover blocks. At one of the Quilt & Sew-In retreats, attendees pieced strips of the bright batiks together. I brought it all home and played on the design wall.  I love the results!

There wasn’t enough left over to make another quilt wholly from the batiks ...

A Little Blue & White from Heart Desire Creations

img_1310.jpg

At my quilt guild monthly meetings, there is a table marked “free.”  Often someone is cleaning up their scraps and patterns and occasionally someone cleans out their whole quilt studio and shares their unwanted excess with guild members. Such was the case with this quilt. Laurie brought a table full of goodies to be scooped up and I grabbed this pretty little blue and white.

img_1311.jpg

Funny, I’m sure she started this many years ago. Her style and fabric tastes have changed so much. Although this quilt was almost completely finished, there it was, abandoned. There was just a little ...

#’s Two & Three Complete from Heart Desire Creations

Happy Mother’s Day! Today’s celebration had many facets. First, I celebrated the memory of my mother. How I wish I could share my passion for quilting with her. She did not quilt, but one of her many talents was sewing. Second, my dear hubby honored me for being the mother to his children. I rather enjoyed his cooking breakfast for me. My children then honored me with an exceptional luncheon that they prepared. I in turn celebrated the good fortune of being their mother. Such a great day!!

Now on to today’s quilt story!  I made three ...

Moving Ahead from Heart Desire Creations

Goals – I like to set them but even better I like to meet them! My biggest upcoming one is to finish up the Hospice quilts by the end of July. They are donated in November, but I’d like to use the other four months for concentrating on completing more of my Works in Progress.  Here is how April ended up:

April WIPs (Medium)

Because I am out of town, I don’t have pics of some finishes.  Will get to those after retreat. Until then – enjoy being creative!

Whew! Spring Retreat! from Heart Desire Creations

The 2019 Spring came to an end yesterday. Once again there were 20 fun and amazingly talented quilters/knitters! These retreaters never disappoint – they share, laugh, work diligently, and of course, laugh some more!

Blocks were sewn for Hospice quilts. Here is one set on the design wall.

A Finish & March Wrap-up from Heart Desire Creations

Another Hospice finish and I love the back and forth of this quilt. The pretty leaf blocks were leftovers from donations to a friend’s daughter’s project. Amazingly enough, I found a beautiful striped fabric in my stash that coordinated with the blocks perfectly! It was fun to put them together and see a pretty quilt emerge. I even had a great swirly fabric for the  backing and binding.

Laurie (my friend who had passed the blocks on to me) was visiting one day, saw the quilt top, and offered to take it home to quilt and bind.  Now ...

Triplets – Quilts of Course! from Heart Desire Creations

3a4a1c93-fd66-4fd2-a9b2-72c5bdcade96.jpeg

Some time ago Pineapple Fabrics donated pretty gold, orange and black print strips for Hospice quilts.  I decided to sew strips together then slice through, turning the cut strip. I really like the look.  Quilting will, of course,  bring much more character to these quilts. I even have the backings cut and the bindings prepped. Yeah Me!!

I plan to devote a couple of weeks in June to machine quilting charity quilts. By then I should have a few more tops complete and will concentrate on finishing. How wonderful it will be to have so many more done half way ...

February & Another Finish! from Heart Desire Creations

It’s such a joy when many hands come together to make and finish a Hospice quilt. This quilt top was donated by a reader. I love the pieced border pattern! I prepared the backing and batting and then Judy (Goneaway Quilting) beautifully did the machine quilting. To finish it off I bound this pretty and peaceful lap quilt. May the recipient enjoy many hours of warmth with this quilt which was put together with love and caring.

Quilts in the Sun from Heart Desire Creations

Finally, after many dreary days the sun shone today and pics could be taken outside! These quilts are just too bright and merry to have their pics taken indoors.  Two more Hospice finishes!  This first quilt is just so fun and happy.  The quilt top was donated so all I had to do was quilt and bind. This will definitely put a smile on someone’s face!

This quilt top was made from donated blocks.  I absolutely love scrappy so I was so excited to put this one together. Quilted, bound and done!

Scraps, Scraps & More Scraps!! from Heart Desire Creations

This is a song every quilter I know sings! “They multiply on their own” is definitely a favorite phrase. I was looking through my scrap bins – they are separated by color. One bin is all Kaffe scraps. Hmmm…I feel like I’ve been looking at these same scraps forever now. I’ve never used one of the many “scrap saver systems” that others use, but wanted to do something to empty these bins and start fresh. So….out came the studio Sizzix and the Big Kick.

I cut many of the larger pieces into two and one-half inch strips ...

In the Mail – Great Mail! from Heart Desire Creations

IMG_0022

A while back I received yet another box of goodies for the Hospice Quilts. There was no note in the box, and no return address. Such generosity! So whoever you are dear donor, thank you, thank you, thank you!

There were TWO jelly rolls…

IMG_0982.jpg

There were geometric print strips, enough to make a quilt…

IMG_0981 (Medium)

And, there were string blocks, sewn on batting and decorative stitches along the strips. I could not contain myself. I went ahead and put the blocks together. A backing will be cut shortly, some quilting and binding done and voila! A Hospice quilt for 2019. There ...

Last Quilt of 2018 from Heart Desire Creations

Taking a break until 2019 is in order but I want to first share my final finish of 2019.  I had many 2 1/2 inch strips of Kaffe fabric. Some were from a design roll and some from another project.  Never have I ever done a Jelly Roll Race quilt so I thought that might be fun. However, after separating the light and darks, I decided on something a bit more dramatic.

Matching the diagonal strips was a bit challenging, but once I figured out the method, it wasn’t too bad. I really like the look and best ...

Fun & Generous Mail! from Heart Desire Creations

Donations in the mail have just been so fun! I am touched with the generosity to the Hospice Quilt ministry that I am a part of. A few weeks ago a box came from another generous soul.

There were many, many of these Star blocks, instructions for making more, and the fabric to complete the quilt!

Here are a variety of colorful and fun blocks.

And another group of appliqued blocks. Our group can surely get creative with these.

Amazing Mail from Heart Desire Creations

A couple of weeks ago a big box of goodness and generosity arrived at my house. The donor wishes to remain anonymous and of course I absolutely respect that. But really, look at this: Some of these blocks are already sewn together. There is probably enough for 3 lap quilts! That is a LOT of sewing!!

3585A3F7-05A9-4A13-8CF4-615764963F47

I love the mixture of vintage and black and white fabrics in these blocks. There’s also plenty of fabric to complete a quilt.

And more scrappy goodness!

Lots of four patches here to make a wonderful quilt or two.

Yes, It’s Really December! from Heart Desire Creations

It’s been a sew filled eleven months. Typically I don’t get a lot done in December, but I’m going to try to get a few things down the road.

img_0870.jpg

Before being donated, I usually hang all the Hospice quilts I have outside for a pic, but days of rain, rain, rain, prohibited me from doing that. Instead, I laid them out in groups on the floor. I love seeing all the color and imagining the comfort and joy they will bring!

And then, about a week ago the Hospice quilts were taken to Fairview Church to be ...
