Hoop Quilt Along Week 3: Curves from Gen X Quilters

Hoop Quilt Along Week3
Hello hello.  It's Week #3 of the Hoop Quilt Along.  We're letting this project marinade nicely over the course of five weeks.  How's the pace so far?  Doing ok?  Last week, we kicked off sewing by making half-square triangles (HSTs).  I bet most of you were chomping at the bit to figure out how you will arrange those HSTs. This week we will choose our HST center arrangement and sew those Drunkard's Path curves together.

To join the HoopQAL, go here (to get the Free Coloring Sheet) and get the Pattern here.

Improv Fabric Hoop Quilt from Gen X Quilters

Improv Hoop Quilt Echinacea field by AnneMarie Chany
Amy Friend, of During Quiet Time (and one of nicest people you'll ever meet), has released her first fabric line with Benartex called Improv.  I was honored and excited when she asked me to be a part of the blog hop to celebrate her collection.  And you know it's all HOOPS up in here, so of course, I brought some hoopy goodness with the Improv collection.

Improv's palette shows such calm and gentleness with great modern prints.  It's a contrast from so many modern fabrics that scream at you with intensity.  Amy's prints beckon you ...

Hopscotch HOOP QUILT from Gen X Quilters

Hopscotch Fabric HOOP Quilt
Here is my latest HOOP QUILT project finish.  Every time I begin a new HOOP QUILT, I try to think of ways to make each one just little bit unique.  This hoop was no different...Hopscotch Hoop Quilt Patchwork Close Up
This hoop uses Hopscotch fabrics by Jamie Fingal for RJR.  They are fun, bright and full of energy.  I decided to arrange the HSTs in this pattern to create a star shape.  This is the first time I used a star layout (inspired by a hoop my mom made) - and I love the way it came out.  The bright and saturated prints look great as ...

Gingham Girls HOOP QUILT from Gen X Quilters

gingham Girls Flag Hoop Quilt
I've been a fan of Amy Smart for many years.  I was so happy for her when I heard she was launching her first fabric line with Penny Rose/Riley Blake.  And then.... when I saw it was a gingham-based vintage-y styled line, I was over the moon about it.  It is so Amy and wonderfully bright.

Amy and I conspired to make a Hoop Quilt for her booth at Spring Market.  I knew this line would stitch up beautifully into a hoop quilt, but it wasn't until I saw her Land That I Love pattern that I ...

Soulful HOOP QUILT Dreamcatcher from Gen X Quilters

Every once in a while, a project really Wows you.  I mean, yes... I love almost every project I sew for one reason or another.  And, sure, I always fuss over everything saying "I love it!". But when sewing becomes your work, it takes something really special to knock your socks off.

Well, guys, this is the one.
When Maureen Cracknell emailed me saying her new line, Soulful, had a mandala theme, I was suuuuuuuuper excited.  We get comfy in our comfort zones (right?) and I have been tending to stick with vibrant, saturated tone-on-tone fabrics lately.  I knew that ...

Picnic 2 HOOP QUILT from Gen X Quilters

If you follow me on Instagram, you've been seeing all the Hoop Quilts I've been making over the past few weeks.  I've been churning them out to prepare for Spring Quilt Market (an industry trade show) in St. Louis in a couple weeks.  Lucky for me, Hoop Quilts are fun and fast to put together.  I made a companion hoop to the original Picnic Hoop Quilt.

Remember the original?  This is it below.  I really can't tell you how much I love this little Add It Up print from Cotton + Steele.  It's such a ...

Safari Party HOOP QUILT from Gen X Quilters

This is the latest HOOP QUILT finish!  It's made with the most precious prints from Melissa Mortenson's new fabric line Safari Party.  Looks at those prints!  Some really fun animals to fussy cut for framing.  Instead of making 16 HSTs - I substituted 4 fussy cut animals as squares to show off the line and used the other prints as accents in the HSTs.

I'm loving these gold accents!  The gold zebra is my fav and the pink feather print looks fantastic with a little glitter in gold.  I decided to try my hand at stitching with this ...

Picnic HOOP QUILT from Gen X Quilters

Picnic Hoop Quilt
Here is the test run for HOOP QUILTS - using Cotton + Steel and a great yarn dyed linen from Robert Kaufman in the outer ring.  I had a charm pack of Melody Miller's Picnic line (from Quilty Box) and I wanted to use the charms to design a hoop pattern that could be adapted to different hoop sizes.  When I first wanted to sew a HOOP QUILT, I could see it in my mind, but wasn't sure how to sew it.

I had to test the piecing construction methods. To make sure it was something I could instruct people ...

Pixelated Circle HOOP QUILT from Gen X Quilters

HOOP QUILTS are addicting in the best way.  It's a short and sweet version of a quilt.  I get all the highs of a finish, in a quarter (or less) of the time.  And a bit more unique than a mini.  Here's the latest.... this beaut was made with all the fixin's from this month's Alison Glass Quilty Box.
I altered the inside of the HOOP QUILT to be a Pixelated Circle block. Check out Jessee's pattern - she offers this block in 5 different sizes to make a complete quilt.

Added some appliqué feather cutouts ...

HOOP QUILTS Day has finally arrived... break out of the BLOCK!
Quick, inexpensive, different, ROUND and super fun.

They are taking the world by storm!
Well, not really.  They're quite polite actually.

Hoop Quilts are sweet round minis, made with love and a little spunk.  And they want to be displayed pretty much anywhere you can possibly think of.  Sewing room? Yes please.  Bedrooms? For sure. Tiny hallway? Absolutely! Hoop Quilts fit perfectly in just about any space.

I plan on sneaking one into our bathroom downstairs and seeing how long it takes my husband to notice.  ;)

Hoop Quilts Video Tutorial: How to Wrap a Hoop from Gen X Quilters

HOOP DAY is almost here!  Thanks so much for your excitement to see Hoop Quilts... Minis in the round are coming soon.  Soon as in FRIDAY  :)

With encouragement from you, I took the leap and gave a video tutorial a whirl.  It shows how I wrap the hoops for the Hoop Quilts and frame them up.  It's not hard at all - but I thought it may be helpful for you to see it in action before you try it.

PSST....This is a SUPER SNEAK PEEK at the samples I made for the pattern.

Hoop Quilt #1 NY Beauty | featuring Curious Dream Fabric from Gen X Quilters

Hoop Quilt NY Beauty Blue Outsidelogo
Hey everybody!  I am super pumped to show you this project today.  It's a brand new concept for me and already I'm envisioning a ton of these hoops featuring different quilt blocks.

Let me introduce you to what I'm calling a Hoop Quilt.

This project began back at Quilt Market when my friend, Angela Pingel, debuted her first fabric collection with Windham Fabrics, Curious Dream.  I was able to score a fat quarter bundle at Sample Spree and knew I wanted to do something special with it.

I'm always thinking about the next BOM, and trying ...
