Jumbo Cookies, Owl Watching, Cross Stitch Finish, EPP Stars from Canadian Needle Nana

When we drove home from Robbie's hockey game last Saturday evening, we couldn't get over how light it still was for 5:30. The season is moving along we happily agreed.

I had the pleasure of spotting and watching a young Barred Owl recently. There is one wooded area here where I've photographed Barred Owls a couple of times. I always look at the tree tops when I walk through there. This time I was lucky to spy him because this owl was quite tucked away, snuggled against a tree trunk and with its colouring, blending in ...

Beautiful Free Patterns, Valentine's Gifts, Slow Stitching Projects from Canadian Needle Nana

I'll speak of weather and get it out of the way as it were. We got advance warning of a winter storm so I was able to fill the feeders, get in my bit of firewood to start the fire and have an extra long walk in the evening thinking I wouldn't get out the next morning.

When I got up at 7, everything was calm, snow gently falling. Quite a bit of accumulation, around 30 cm by then, so the snowplows had their work cut out for them...So Ned and I tried out the trails. It ...

A little fabric therapy................ from Exuberant Color

I made my first fabric purchase this year.  Yes, it's Tilda again and yes, it was pricey because it is a new line, but I needed a perk.

I bought the smallest pack available, fat 8ths plus 1/2 yard of my favorite fabric.

I finished quilting the baby quilt last night but haven't trimmed it yet.  That will happen today and I'll find a binding fabric and hopefully get it finished.

I was just about out of the cookies in my freezer so it was time to bake something else.  I love this cherry topped cake ...

Two Slow Stitch Projects, Plant Booster Juice, Free Patterns from Canadian Needle Nana

I enjoy spying the white birch trees.

Last night we fell asleep to the faint drone of snowmobiles over on the the trails. It was a great calm night for it but would have been cold. I imagine they would know to be well covered. And snowmobiles these days offer heated handles and seats, all sorts of stuff, not like when I drove one in the late seventies.

How did your last week and weekend go? We had a very long doctor's visit for Tony with much discussion about the failing strength in his legs. He has taken two ...

Old Folk Issues, Me These Days, Happy Hand Stitching from Canadian Needle Nana

The male and female Red Cardinals have been visiting the big feeders late afternoon just at almost dusk. Maybe they load up on a little nutrition to get them through the cold night. It's hard to get a photo of them together and this was taken from a great distance. I wonder if they are the same pair I see all the time as it's believed Red Cardinals mate for life.

You've probably figured out by now that my favourite stitching is hand stitching. With that in mind, I've started another EPP project, this one ...

Why I Don't Mind Extreme Cold and Other Thoughts from Canadian Needle Nana

How are you...snowed in or sweltering in the summer heat?  The new year has started with wild and horrible weather around the globe. Heartbreaking to see devastation on such a scale in California. It makes us appreciate what is a normal winter so far here in the Ottawa valley. Wind chills of over -20 many days but you can have all the gear to layer up and keep warm on walks while out and about. I notice some folks have very fashionable, and what I would call, even beautiful winter outer wear. Mine tends to be more utilitarian and ...

2025 Trends, White Hair Issues, Pillsbury Treats from Canadian Needle Nana

I'm feeling pretty good today as I successfully navigated the online Patient Portal at our doctor's website to renew a prescription, a cream I use infrequently but like to have on hand. The Portal has become notorious with having so many glitches it has increased calls to the reception desk, not lessened them as hoped. Now if only I could figure out Blogger.

I keep the binoculars on my kitchen window shelf and my camera handy there too. I took this photo of a small fluffy looking bird that turned out to be a very young Blue Jay ...

Another day of triangles......... from Exuberant Color

Yesterday morning I paired lights with dark for more flannel triangle squares.

I got 51 of them sewn last night.  Now my totals are 54 + 58 + 51.  I still have a bunch to sew from the morning pairing.

This is the assortment cut so far of dark squares for the Plaid-ish quilt.  I have 60 of 80 cut, 20 to go.  I'Il probably overcut since I'm not sure the ones with red in them will work because all of the mediums are red/pink/orange.  I also have most of one of the other shapes cut.

This is ...

More Presents, Cakes and Stitching Notes from Canadian Needle Nana

A crisp -23 C wind chill out there this morning. I'll bundle up for the morning walk, maybe even break out my balaclava. I'm now filling two bird feeders with black sunflower seeds. These little guys are getting snacks from the ground.

I have my little 2025 planner ready to go. I looked at many fancy and even beautiful ones and in the end opted for this $5 one at the Dollar Store. It ticked all the boxes for what I need. Beside it is the new address book I bought from Amazon. It has a special section ...

Christmas and Other Odds and Sods from Canadian Needle Nana

This is the last sign of the mystery pond animal. Something broke through the ice to make a path right to the hole in the bank.

The pond is like this now. It can hold my weight and there is no further sign of the animal.
There is lots of goal setting happening this special time of year as we start a brand new one. "25 in 25" is very popular in both the cross stitch and quilty worlds. What do you think? For myself, I'm determined to continue finishing projects begun and my in sight quilting table is ...

Quilty Finish, Noel Stitching, YouTube Videos from Canadian Needle Nana

Well, how are you and are you feeling festive finally?

Thank you so much for the comments and emails on my posts. Several of you asked about Tony's lack of appetite. It has been slowly waning. But that does not bother him like I think it should as he always enjoyed being thin. However, it is his lack of strength and feeling tired after only minutes of doing some chore or other that really bothers him. We just had yet another appointment with the doctor who reviewed his recent tests. No, nothing has been discovered; everything is status quo ...

Binding finished................ from Exuberant Color

The binding was finished at 10:30 last night while I was finishing up the second batch of Chex Mix.  I'll measure it and take its full photo today.  It is big so it will cover my double design wall in the basement.

I usually use the mini pretzels in my Chex Mix but all that was available at my local store was regular size pretzels and these little pretzel sticks.  Batch one just about fills a gallon zipper bag.

Now comes the hard part, dividing up all of the cookies for several families and getting them into containers.

More sweets.............. from Exuberant Color

I started  the day by baking the English Toffee Squares.  A few family members like nuts on them and the rest prefer them without.  I am in the without group. Look! I took the picture before I started eating them.

Late in the afternoon I baked the shortbread cookies, a favorite with the grandchildren.

Now it is time to start making the Chex Mix.

Four corners are done but I have about 30" more to hand stitch.  I had 3 sessions of hand stitching between baking and vacuuming.

They are predicting light snow twice this week but no white Christmas.

Lots of trees............ from Exuberant Color

I made the chocolate spritz yesterday.  I started out with trees and the second tray had other shapes.  One of the shapes was a fail and broke up when I tried to get them off the cookie sheet, more for me to eat..........

I did get a lot of stitching time on the binding.  The bottom corner shows up as blue but it is gray there too.  The combination of my lighting and the camera's ideas made this happen.  I start my bindings 6" before a corner so I have 3 corners finished.  I have 2 sides and 19 ...

A busy day................ from Exuberant Color

Last night I started the hand stitching on this binding.  I only got half of one long side done but I will stitch a little every night.

In the morning I ran the dishwasher (and emptied it) and did a load of laundry.  In the afternoon I made some fudge.

I also got the pale pink Spritz made.  The second tray got a little too brown on the bottom but that is the way I like them, so some of these are for me.

My rain gauge had a half inch of rain in it from Saturday.  Then there was ...

Simple Comforts...Stitching, Fashion and Food from Canadian Needle Nana

I have the bird feeders filled and the wood brought in for the day long fire.

And I'm in my cosy clothes. Found these fleece pants at Walmart and just love them for around the house. I noticed how warm they were when I picked up the wood from the veranda.
Just the right blend of weight and softness and not too bulky. There was a time I would not wear these except for exercising, not dressy enough, but now I'm the dress police here and, apparently, I no longer give a hoot. Comfort is trumping fashion. Same ...

No progress............... from Exuberant Color

I didn't get around to sewing the floral star top, just not interested in doing it yesterday.  So here is a lot of miscellaneous.

This is the leftover block that didn't get used in the layout.  It will go into the orphan block box most likely.

I was cleaning off the dining room table so my birthday cards were gathered up.

My orange cactus is starting to bloom as most of the others are done.  I'm happy this one waited a while.

I baked Aunt Ethel's Kringlas last night.  I had to test them, over and ...

Dark and Damp December Dawns from Canadian Needle Nana

When walking Ned one day, we spotted a Barred Owl. I say "we" because it was on the fence and Ned stopped and watched it too. I took Ned back home, grabbed my large camera and headed out to where I'd last seen it. It had moved across the driveway and then as I watched, it flew much further into thick bush and I could get only so far. I couldn't find it but there was a very large shape in a tree I assumed to be my owl. I knew it was unlikely any photos would be ...

November Nattering from Canadian Needle Nana

View out my sewing room window. The deer and the turkeys take turns dropping by.

The exceptional warmth into the fall added extra life to the blooming things in the garden. Here I've captured the very last rose on our front walkway bushes. Not a bee in sight anymore.
I had lunch out at a little diner recently. Lovely Chai Tea (which made me think why don't I make this at home) and poached eggs on sourdough toast with my favourite...smoked salmon. They didn't skimp on it either. I could have had a green salad instead ...

#2 finish for November 2024 from Exuberant Color

"Memories - 1956" is finished, just a couple months after I made the quilt top.  The gray dotted fabric is a Kaffe Fassett fabric, "Spot", the pinks are Kaffe's and Tula Pink's fabrics.  It is 64.5" x 76.5".

The backing fabric is by Kaffe Fassett also.  The batting is Hobbs 80/20 and it was quilted by my longarm friend, Robin.

I think the stripe with flowers worked really well for binding.  It is also a Kaffe fabric.  I just realized I didn't rotate this photo.

I hadn't checked the tomato plants for a few ...
