FMQ – Wave from I Patch and Quilt

Last week I shared a pattern that looked like people doing the wave, and this week second pattern depicts wild and crazy ocean waves. Strong currents, wild winds and smashing waves were the inspiration for this dense pattern. After all it is Maritime Day today!

This pattern is great as a background filler and that is why I chose a thread that blended with the fabric more. I don’t want to thread to stand out much with a filler, it is supposed to flatten the background so other elements stand out more. The wave design also adds a lot ...

Secret FMQ and T-shirt Quilt Update on Free Motion Mavericks from Quilting & Learning

Hi and welcome to week 448 of the Free Motion Mavericks' linking party. I hope that you've had a good creative week with time at your sewing machine or studio! I've been busy making a runner that I'll be able to reveal next week. I can share the back since it won't give away much and you can see the free motion quilting (FMQ).

Making a runner

My brother is having a birthday/house warming party so I asked him if he wanted a small quilted project. He said that he could use a runner, 30 ...

Free Motion Quilting – Coffee from I Patch and Quilt

How do you like your coffee? Strong or with a lot of milk, with an extra added flavor or just plain?

I am not much of a coffee drinker myself, but most of my family members LOVE their coffee in the morning. Shiny appliances with lots of buttons on the counter tops, speciality roasted beans and unique cups to drink it from. Making coffee is turned into an art form!

Can you add a specialty flavor to your quilting?

Yes you can! Add some more depth to your design bij using a slightly darker thread. Some areas of the Coffee ...

Free Motion Quilting – Cheer from I Patch and Quilt

One arm up, two arms up… WOOHOO!

Tomorrow our high school students will visit an amusement park. I will not join them this time as a chaperone, but I can imagine their cheerful screams in the many rollercoasters. Some of them even dare to hold their arms up into the air while riding the coaster. Personally I don’t mind the speed of that type of ride, but the height is an issue… and let’s not even talk about the vertigo it causes me. So I normally will admire their joy from the ground.

This week’s pattern is ...

Free Motion Quilting – Bamboo from I Patch and Quilt

Do you have exotic plants in your garden?

In my street a lot of neighbors have lovely Japanse maple trees and bushes in their gardens. The maples really stand out beautifully against the white painted modern houses. There are even a few neighbors who have a type of bamboo that doesn’t spread.

Today, September 18th, bamboo is celebrated on a global level to spread awareness on its conservation. Let’s enjoy this gorgeous plant in our weird and wonderful quilting corner of the internet too.

This Bamboo pattern is pretty easy to stitch out. The bamboo design can be ...

Free Motion Quilting – Chocolate from I Patch and Quilt

Hot tip: read all the way to the end!

How do you like your chocolate? As a chocolate bar that you can share (or not), as a hot cocoa with whipped creme on top or a as brownie that you can nibble on?

My personal favorite ways to eat chocolate is as sprinkles on icecream, as a chocolate bar with nuts, or like my fellow Dutchies as hagelslag on a peanut butter sandwich.

This week’s free motion quilting design is called Chocolate, as you have guessed already. This pattern is a grid-based design. I stitched it out on a ...

Scrappy Yellow Placemat on Free Motion Mavericks from Quilting & Learning

Welcome to week 446 of Free Motion Mavericks. I published this a little early so that I can make the September 6th deadline for the Joyful Quilter's August Table Scraps Challenge. Nothing like racing the clock to publish. Thanks again Joyful for this great challenge.

Scrappy Yellow Placemat

August's colour is yellow which is perfect for the second placemat that I will make. This one is for my daughter, who requested yellow. The letters are X and O, which I will add to the free motion quilting (FMQ). If the verb tenses are a little wonky in this ...

Yes, yes, yes, the classes in these events are all FREE! You will have free access for a certain time period, and you could even buy the classes if you want to keep them for longer.

I was asked to create free motion quilting classes for both these events and I have been sitting on this ...

Free Motion Quilting – Kelp from I Patch and Quilt

Have you ever heard of a Kelp forest? It is the name of an underwater area that is densely populated by kelp. It covers most of our oceans’ coastlines. Mysterious, beautiful and also very important for the Earth’s ecosystem.

And kelp makes a great inspiration for Free Motion Quilting designs. Flowy and bendy so you can cover an entire area, soft and curvy for fabulous texture, and just two different design elements to worry about.

Start with a curvy (gentle serpentine) vertical line. That line curves back down with a series of feather / teardrop shapes. The next piece of ...

Cottage escape on Free Motion Mavericks from Quilting & Learning

Hi and welcome to week 441 of Free Motion Mavericks. I hope that your summer is going well. It seems to zoom right by, doesn't it? This week I have a couple of things to share with you - including some oldies but goodies!

Cutwork and Broderie Anglaise

My daughter and I went for an overnight trip to my brother's cottage. We had the place to ourselves and had a lovely, relaxing change of scenery. Of course I brought supplies to keep working on my whitework. I just can't seem to leave it

A Gorgeous Red Basket on Free Motion Mavericks from Quilting & Learning

Welcome to week 440 of Free Motion Mavericks. I hope that you've had a good week. I haven't done much until yesterday but I now have a pretty red basket to share with you.

Making A Gorgeous Red Basket

When I made the microwave fabric bowls in March for the Table Scraps Challenge, I promised one to a friend who said that they were so pretty that she wouldn't use it in the microwave because they might get dirty. Rather, she would use it as a bowl or holder. So, remembering this, I decided to make a ...

Welcome to week 439 of Free Motion Mavericks. I started a new free motion quilting (FMQ) project - just for you, so that I would have something interesting to share. I hope that you'll like it!

Taking Jo Hill's "Hare" Class

I took a course with Jo Hill through TextileArtist.org's Stitch Club last July. I love her work so much that I purchased the "Hare" online class and I'm finally getting around to doing it a year later! I hope that you'll love Harry the hare as much as I do

FMQ Wild Hexies is done! from Quilting & Learning

Hi! Welcome to week 431 of Free Motion Mavericks. I hope that you are doing well! I had a burst of creative energy after my Out of the Box Fibre Artists meeting this week and finished free motion quilting (FMQ) Wild Hexies. Yeah!

Adding Flowers and a Border

The first thing I did when I started to work on Wild Hexies again was to see if I had to re-do the cute cars and trucks, since that's where I was having so much trouble with my stitches. It turned out that it wasn't that bad, so I just ...

Rainbow Neighbourhood Houses 5 and 6 from Quilting & Learning

Welcome to week 430 of Free Motion Mavericks. I didn't get much free motion done this week, except for adding details on one of the Neighbourhood houses.

Houses at Night

The two houses that I completed will be at the bottom of the quilt and are night scenes. I have beautiful night sky fabric and chose colours for the houses that are a little darker than those done to date.

Two houses at night

The last time I made these houses, I did two at a time - so that's what I did. At least if I mess up ...
